Reading mlive-articles like this and the forum- is like entering an alternate universe
What high school news paper did Brian Van Combover come from ?
David Mayo is even worse than Van Ochten. Except in hairstyle decisions.
The GR Press's sportswriters are an embarrassment.
The GR Press Sports Section sucks in general. Take several thoroughly inept writers (the one you just read, who is supposed to be the U-M beat guy, David Mayo, a convicted pot grower who was reinstated to his former job Rucker-style as soon as he got out of prison, and an occasional steaming pile of column from the "Huge opinion"), add the lameness of being published in the afternoon (who would wait to see scores with information literally available in my pocket online?), and top off with a large helping of Michigan State bias (extra coverage, articles, Dantonio-praising, etc.) and you have the only local option we fans in Grand Rapids are forced to put up with. I am continually disgusted on a daily basis.
I have to read the same stuff in the Kzoo Gazette. Back in the stone age that was my main source of U-M sports information. How'd we ever survive before MGoBlog?
Heard Jack Moss say once that you should never let the facts get in the way of a good story. Long story short he butchered an article about my stepmom and then told her that. Before we moved I vowed to never support that joke of a newspaper.
With that great sales pitch you made, how about a link so we can all subscribe to this fine publication? And maybe contact info for the sports editor so Drew Sharp can send them a resume?
Not sure if you're being serious or not, but David Mayo has been a constant source of DERP for the past few years. The guy consistently has 4-5 major mistakes or plain non-truths in every column.
But yeah, this guy, Van Ochten, is pretty much best friends with Huge Douche Bill Simonson, so that should tell you all you need to know.
It really is an embarrassment that the sportswriters for my home paper could easily be replaced by middle schoolers and no one would know the difference. Wait, what am I saying -- that would be an insult to middle schoolers everywhere.
Haven't read Mayo for several years, but he is (or maybe was) a respected boxing writer.
He might be a good boxing writer, but he doesn't know a goddamn thing about college football. The obvious lack of research in his columns is appalling.
he took a few too many punches?
Mayo is total garbage. I'm located in downtown GR, and I'm relishing the opportunity to walk into a bar where that fat idiot is 'holding court' so I can heckle him, and then end up punching him in his fat face. Awful.
Be sure to ask him for a complimentary dimebag or at least some pot-growing pointers before you do that.
I couldn't even read the article after looking at his picture. Is that a hair piece? Fugly dude.
Even dudes claiming to be Sparty fans are brutalizing him in the comments.
Can't blame you for not reading, but I can't help quoting his most outrageous claim: saying he's seen "no progress" since the UCONN game, the guy concludes RR is done. Last I checked, Michigan won the UCONN game 30-10, so...
To be fair, what game has been more impressive than the UConn win? We dominated. Since then our signature win is either over a Crist-less ND team or a game in which we gave up 65 points to a mediocre Illini squad (who subsequently lost, at home, to 1-9 Minnesota). Now I don't agree with the article, but to say he's seen no progress is not that hard to agree with.
As a side note, I hate all the "boo hoo, someone wrote a bad article about MIchigan" posts. Someone thinks we should look better against the Purdues and the Illinois of the world? Guess what, so do I. Quit making excuses as to why we struggle. Until we sack up and admit we have no excuses for not being better, we won't be.
He uses a lot of one-sentence paragraphs.
It annoys me.
To no end.
his hair or the fact that he's a sportswriter.
I'd call BVO a Sparty fanboy, but I think that'd be more insulting to Sparty fanboys.
I'll save the effort and just post:
Wiat, that's not right. I mean:
Damn it, not again. What I meant:
That doesn't even make sense!
Oh wait, here it is:
Eh, close enough.
Sadly for the GR Press, this post makes twice as much sense as the content of their article about the state of Michigan football.
is TomVH hanging from the ceiling!?!?
I saw that. I don't know what is worse. BVO's combover or that article. That was poor.
Double post, my bad.
The GR Press is a heavily slanted to Sparty as there are several big boosters in the area. I think they and Huge Simonson basically answer to a douchey Peter Seccia who is a major Sparty. This particular article is laughable as this guy clear doesn't have a clue about the program, and just spewed some junk to get a rise out of people..
GR Press is a heavily slanted to Sparty
It's true. My buddy was a copy editor there for a while and he said they'd cheer against Michigan every week. No joke.
Virtually the entire Michigan Rivals message board has turned into a less eloquent version of columnist. There's literally ntohing that the team can do or that Jim Harbaugh can do that will convince 75% of that board that RR needs to be fired immediately so we can hire Harbaugh.
So it's our fault the stadium was half-full? He just says that to bring more negativity. The way he words everything makes it negative.
It produced their seventh win of the season.
Not "The Wolverines got their seventh win" or anything of that sort. No, he has to use passive phrasing to make it sound like we didn't earn it. Earlier, he mentions how no one should be bragging about our win, especially not RR. Well, he wasn't, so shut the f*** up.
The one sentence paragraphs.
To all sportswriters:
I think the one-sentence paragraphs are meant to convey the importance and gravity of those sentences. Or something.
douchier. Because his one sentence paragraphs are like
"Well they didn't."
"How much more can they take of Rodriguez?"
And we won today. These aren't the one sentence paragraphs that follow a win. What should follow a win would be something positive:
So much for pride. It often cometh before the fall.
I find this interesting, because not only is it a Dantonio reference, but it applies to the Grand Rapids Press as well. So much arrogant pride (misplaced, of course) in this article, and the paper will soon be out of business.
Now let's see...an out of shape, bad toupee wearing, second rate columnist writing for a limited readership has called out Rich Rodriguez.
This is one "sportswriter" who should not have his picture to his column. Just saying.
He chose the "good" one. Brrrrr....
of why newspapers are dying. They have guys like this writing for them. Seriously, he tries to incorporate the classic Dantonio, "pride comes before the fall" line? Lame, man. Just lame.
This makes me glad I get all my college football news from mgoblog, SBNation, and Dr. Saturday.
I want to thnk you for bringing that monstrositiy to my attention and at the same time slap you for making me read it.
I am torn. I'm off to think about this.
All I know is that I could land a fighter jet on the author's forehead...wow talk about a face for radio...or print work, hehe
There's a dead otter strapped to his skull.
I've seen some bad hairpieces in my lifetime, but wow. Just wow.
I thought it was a catfish but you may be right
I'm still in a state of catatonic shock at how poorly-written this article is.
Like, you're anti-Michigan, I don't really care, that's going to happen. But maybe you should try putting sentences next to each other that make sense, or maybe supporting your grandiose claims with some sort of "logic" or "evidence." You know, try doing something that makes sense with your column.
I cannot believe somebody who is paid to write things is capable of writing something this bad.
Do I smell a fisking in the future at the hands of Fearless Leader?
I think he may have under the influence of alcohol when he wrote it. And I'm serious.
The Grand Rapids Press is a useless rag and has been for sometime. This is nothing new.
Reporter's In-Your-Face Combover - Hair Stylist Must Go
I find it funny that somebody cites the firing of Bill Solich at Nebraska and how he was fired due to the program falling into mediocrity, and then relates it to Michigan. Great example. The next head coach really worked out for Nebraska...
I think you mean Frank.
I thought the same thing. I don't remember there being much positive press at the end of the Bill Callahan era. But to be fair, Nebraska was due for a downturn after Osborne, who was turning a bit into Bowden except he knew when to walk away.
lol terrible article... I also love the comments by the retard MSU fan talking about how RR should be gone saying he will only win 3 Big Ten games in his 3rd year..
Didn't Dantonio's bang up crew only win 3 of 4 games last year in his 3rd year? Typical troll retard
BVO has been on with Huge at least once a week all fall. He's terrible. Nothing good to say about Rich Rod or the Lions (he writes crap about them too) ever. He's always ready for the "next coach".
The Grand Rapids Press is the biggest horseshit fucking garbage excuse for a news publication in the history of mankind. These assholes get to write what they want, and its all a bunch of useless bullshit. Sadly, its all we have over here if we want any local news at all, so we end up reading this crap. Fuck them.
Then add woodtv to the mix and all we get is half assed attempts to cover news with no sources and no credible facts! It is a joke!!
but had to stop........horrible......what a hack........
Let's play a game of BVO or FAKE. Four of the following lines were written by BVO, the other made up by me. Which is the FAKE?
a) A lot of college football coaches like to pretend that all wins count the same... No, they don’t.
b) So much for pride. It often cometh before the fall.
c) The U-M alumni and fans looking through maize-and-blue glasses might beg to differ.
d) The team showed a lack of preparation and coaching that would make John L Smith cringe.
e) ... while Robinson proved he is just as incapable as the U-M secondary of making a form tackle.
is this author the one who penned that masterpiece of journalism back in 2008 that said RR needed to switch to his "Back-Up Plan" offense about mid-way through the season?
"BV, I retired from Thompson Newspapers[USA Today] as a Cirulation Manager, and I am here to tell you if any of our sports wirtters wrote the crap you did they would have been fired on the spot. RR will be here next year even if you don't want to belive it. Go Blue!!!"
Ironic how he misspelled "writers".
BVO may have the world's worst combover, but even that isn't as bad as his writing.
You lost me at
A lot of college football coaches like to pretend that all wins count the same.
No, they don’t.
Um...yes, they do. A win is a win is a win is a win is a win. That's not pretend...it's real. Winning is binomial, the answer is either yes or no.
After reading this article, my only reaction is....are you fuckin' kidding me?
I just took a massive dump that closely resembled both Brian VanOchten's column, and Brian VanOchten himself. Of course, I have now just insulted feces everywhere by comparing it (them?) to this guy.
If you thought it was a terrible article, why did you link it?
Perhaps we need to start print-linking all mlive articles.
I've always thought that evil needs to be destroyed, rather than ignored.
Plus, I was hoping that some mgoboarders would pile on the comments section, which has been a thorough shitbeating for the writer.
I'm getting so damn sick of people saying he is going to get the ax. Watch them beat Wisc and still claim he's gonna get fired because the win wasn't good enough.
As I heard Sam and Ira talking about, some people are more interested in being right about RR than having the team do well.
My message to you is: Stop associating yourselves with Michigan football. You're an embarrassment to us alumni!
Weren't they hiring a new sports editor a few months ago? I remember several friends sending a GR Press sporstwriting job to me and saying "you should apply!" because friends don't know the difference between a publisher of a magazine they've never heard of and a sports editor of a mid-sized city's newspaper.
If this is what they got...
In the comments (page 5). He even takes a shot at MGoBlog! He's still a jilted lover...
Totally agree with you Brian....great column and great analysis. The Rich Rod Error has been a disaster and should end after this season....if Michigan football wants to get back to being a premier program again.
But that is not going to happen.
The Koolaid drinkers like that loser at mgoblog keep preaching about their King Rich Rod...and Dave Brandon seems to have his back as well.
So...another year of this crud....
Awwwww, he's really upset!
the raspberry koolaid. Harder to find nowadays but was always really good with a splash of OJ.
Happy to consume the MGoBlog Koolaid anyday.
Fuckin a, man. Fuckin a.
oh man that guys hair looks like he's wearing a wig or toupee meant for kids
I love how they bring up Nebraska into all this. It may look like the same situation that we have here, but thats untrue. Callahan was all business. He didn't give a Sh*t about any of the players he coached. Callahan was a great recruiter but couldn't develope tallent, He had all the tallent in the world and he couldn't do a thing with it.
Just wanted another opportunity to say Fuck the Grand Rapids Press. That is all.
"It’s a program that needs a miracle finish to its season – or a coaching change."
Actually wants RR gone before the last two games of the season. Be nice, people, I think this guy is mentally handicapped.
My favorite snippet from the comments -
ps The Grand Rapids Press should can Brian VanOchten for not showing improvement in both his writing and hair styles....my god you are an ugly man
I interned with the Whitecaps and Van Ochten would drive in in his Corvette, thinking he owned the place. Dude, you cover Class A baseball in Grand Rapids. He's a complete asshat. It is truly embarassing that he represents Grand Rapids.
I mean, I really like GR as I've lived here for the past seven years, but let's be honest, no one really goes to the Whitecaps (and to a slightly less degree, the Griffins) unless it's cheap beer nite.
And, again, the fact that he's best friends with the Huge Douche should come as a surprise to no one.
Right on man -- born and raised here and have had to deal with shitty journalism from birth. We have awful sports radio and awful newspapers. Sean and Terp is painful to listen to, and Huge is a terd (aside from him interviewing, he's a good interviewer). I actually don't mind Bakita and Grey in the mornings -- they are decent except when they bring in Ty Hallock on Fridays. He is absolutely HORRIBLE -- slappy Sparty douche. I actually think I really hate Hallock on the radio more than anyone.
Hallock can barely get out a coherent sentence -- he starts every one with "Um" or "Uhh" or "Ya know." Then he'll pause for about 3-4 seconds, and finally mumble something about MSU being the greatest team ever, then trail off.
I really think his brain has been damaged. Or, he's just incredibly dumb. It's hard to tell. Either way, the guy provides zero insight into anything and is an embarrassment to radio in Grand Rapids.
As for Sean & Terp, they're not bad to listen to when Sean isn't talking, which is roughly 90% of the time, so I guess they pretty much suck. Baligian never fucking shuts up, railing on the same goddamn point seven different times. You can listen for five straight minutes and never hear Terp speak. I can't imagine getting only 10% of the talk time is what he signed up for. I do really enjoy listening to Tom Kowalksi, though.
Agreed, The Press has really declined over the years though, especially in the sports section. The fact that Van Ochten even compares to Mayo in his level of suck is just embarrassing.
The only thing worse than that article is BVO's hairline...
And it looks hungry.
for those who care, friend over at the GR Press told me today that they just laid off VanOchten. And that as they do over there, its very likely he knew for a week or so now. Prolly saw this as one last chance to take a swipe at Rich Rod.
When I read the article I thought it did come from freep and not the grpress. I guess when you have the M beat you can say all you want against the program. I agree that the paper slants toward msu because of all the boosters there but it is not easy to take. Unfortunately, the Muskegon paper is owned by the same people that have the press and we get their garbage all the time.
