Group Therapy Time: Your Worst Moment
So my wife admitted last night that with HARBAUGH on board, hopefully leading us out of the wilderness, she's a little worried that I will revert back to watching Michigan games as a raging lunatic in the way that I did when the team was relevant. I think she has secretly enjoyed the last few years as I've become more and more detached, watching out of a sense of duty more than any real hope of a return to glory. The discussion led us to my lowest moment, the Crable hit on Troy Smith in the epic 2006 game. I had invited my parents over to watch with us, and my poor mother is still embarrassed by what I yelled at Mr. Crable. SO...at what moment did the team make you lose your mind the most? Come on, it'll help to talk about it!
The Horror, I was numb.
Ball State 2006 Closer then it should have been. I remember slamming my hat on the seat infront of me.
Bitches be talkin shit, yo.
any of the past losses to State are ones that have pushed me over the edge. I grew up in EL when winning was a sure thing. Losing to them is unacceptable given the history of that rivalry and dominating them in every decade besides the 50s or 60s. The game that really pushed me over the edge to the point of punching my door was the 2006 Ohio game given the stakes. I think we possibly win the championship with a win given what we did to Florida the next year.
Different teams, different years ... Florida lost a bunch of guys (including their entire defensive line) to the NFL after that season.

Nothing personal, but I'm amazed at how people go from "Crable doesn't hit Smith" to "National Championship." OSU had already rung up 35 points on us. Is it a foregone conclusion that we get the ball and neatly kill the entire clock *and* score? I'm not even sold on that. Then we're going to whup Florida in the championship? Did you see what they did to OSU? I'm thinking they would've done the same to us. We didn't exactly persuade the doubters against USC.
While I agree with basically everything you said, I look back on that USC game and think about how much of a let down it must have been for the players: A chance to beating OSU and going to the National Championship to playing in the Rose Bowl. They couldn't have been fully invested in it emotionally.
but we beat Wisconsin and Notre Dame soundly who turned out to be pretty good teams.
In CO the last 25 years. I went to all three of those games. The two years after that (until we beat them here) were the worst.
Kordell's hail mary....there was property damage
Blowing a 9 point lead to OSU at home in 2005, losing to Nebraska in the Alamo Bowl, ND trampling us this past year and getting humiliated in east Lansing last year as well. After a while you grow numb to it. Thank God it's all over. The pansies have lost and the favorite son returns home.
My answer would be one of the following contenders:
- 2006 @ OSU - realizing the magnitude of what had just happened hit me like a ton of bricks.
- 2001 @ MSU - Spartan Bob. TJ Duckett. Enough said.
- 1994 vs. Colorado. 7-year-old me was at the game, and he was not a happy camper.
- The Horror.
- 2008 vs. Toledo - The game where it truly hit me that things would be different now. Harsh realization when you're in your senior year at M.

I'm sorry for the children that were around me on the walk back from the stadium.
I was thirteen at the time and had taken the liberty of writing every single play of the game in a little notebook as it transpired on-screen, along with various choice comments. I remember yelling angrily at the TV as the end of the game neared; something about "WHY ARE YOU RUNNING A THREE YARD OUT ON THIRD AND SIX?!"
There are so many low moments over the past few years. Nebraska in 2013 was the one that I raged at the most. It was the first game Hoke lost at home and I was absolutely devastated and appaled at our offense in that game. The next home game was Ohio St. 41-42. My friends gave up on that game, so I decided to go alone. Ended up having a fantastic time and it was the best team effort all season. The ending of the Ohio St. game is the only that has ever pushed me to tears. Man, fuck Ohio St.
Last year's losses weren't really as bad in significance as the game of the century or the horror but last year was bad in that we're 7/8 years into the post Carr era and we're still dealing with this shit and going 5-7. That's why we need to reel in top recruits like Upshur and Gary. I want as much insurance as possible that Michigan is going to become dominant again. We have the coach, we have the assistants, we have the support staff, we have the facilities, and we need top football players. We need to win now. I'm tired of waiting for the next season.
Someone already mentioned it, but one of them would be the 2010 Michigan-Illinois game as well. I can still remember being embarrassed, even agitated after that game. My wife was with me at the game and was trying to comfort me with, "But you won!" and all I could do was say with a slightly raised voice, "Win? What did we win? Holy shit...." and I got up and began to walk back to the car, saying very little.
For sheer shock, depression, bewilderment which found expression in drinking, The Horror would be the winner hands down. We parked in town. I finally got back to my car by way of The Brown Jug. My wife drove fortunately. I did not even know what to feel after that game expect that vague uneasiness that nothing would be quite the same again.
I was at that one. I think the final was 51-31 or something like that. And you're right - it wasn't even close.
That's when I developed a permanent hatred of that stupid FSU tomahawk chant or whatever the hell they call it. It was from hearing so damn many times that day.
Yeah - it was the first time I saw us get outmatched physically. Their d-backs were like gazelles.
I got grounded after the 2000 (I think it was 2000) northwestern game because i threw the tv remote into the wall broke it into several pieces. so that one stands out. It was in Evanston and we have up like a million yards of offense.
It wasn't even the AT fumble that killed me. It was the fact that Michigan gave up 54 points to NW. I was ready for Lloyd to leave after that game.
What made that game so bad was the countdown clocks and knowing for weeks that there was going to be a 1/2 matchup and all the media hype.
Bowl games during the Bo era gave me ulcers.
8-1-2, 1976 Rose Bowl: Rick Leach concussed (Oklahoma 14, Michigan 6)
10-1, 1977 Rose Bowl: Vince Evans runs in TD standing up (USC 14, Michigan 6)
10-1, 1978 Rose Bowl: Warren Moon shreds UM D with arm
(Washington 27, Michigan 20)
10-1, 1978 Rose Bowl: Charles White and blind refs (USC 10, Michigan 10). Look, even Anthony Munoz wants to recover that damn thing.
8-3, 1979 Gator Bowl: Lawrence Taylor sacks Wangler (North Carolina 17, Michigan 15)
Thanks for taking the time to post those....some bittersweet memories in there!
hurt, none of them pissed me off as much as the 1990 Rose Bowl---Bo's final game as Michigan Head Coach---when the official intentionally "stuck it to Bo" (as I've read several places that the official allegedly bragged afterwards) and threw a late flag to wipe out a long gain on a 4th quarter Michigan fake punt. To add insult to injury, Bo was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct and we were penalized a total of 25 yards on that play.
Here's a write-up I found from the Chicago Tribune with lots of juicy post-game Bo quotes:
THERE WAS NO G** D*** HOLD!!! It pisses me off to this day that Bo and one of his finest teams were screwed over by that kind of BS!
...but I'll add this video of that game.
Answer: The Horror
Still the "new" scoreboard to me. I miss the OLD pre-video one.
(Not this one though!)
Looks pretty good. I can remember a few games like that in Michigan Stadium.
Ricky Powers coughed up the football when we were running out the clock with a minute left, effectively ending a shot at 6 straight B1G titles. First time I ever broke a remote.
Never heard of that stupid QB before that game or after that game.
