Group of players reaffirm commitment to PSU

- A group of 25 players led by Zordich and Mike Mauti reaffirmed their commitment to stay at Penn State this morning. Notably, Silas Redd was not present. It will be interesting to see if PSU brings Redd to B1G Media Days this week as originally planned.

Video of statement:

Bruce Feldman ‏@BFeldmanCBS

Arnd 2 dozen PennSt players make commitment to program this AM. RT @Ben_Jones88 Silas Redd was NOT one of players at the statement

EDIT #2:

-The previous report on Silas Redd is false. PSU is taking no players to Media Days. Commence Silas Redd speculation again.

Rittenberg/Bennett‏@ESPN_BigTen

No Penn State players will attend Big Ten media days. Silas Redd, John Urschel and Jordan Hill had been scheduled to attend.

- Also in other news, the Freeh Report has been updated to correct some errors. Doesn't really change anything in the report but will probably give more fuel to the more delusional segments of the PSU fanbase who continue to refuse to accept the facts contained within it.

Agreed.

You could possibly say that about all three. The way Michigan is recruiting, I would rather have a player the coaches could teach from the beginning of their career. Underclassmen coming in just before start of camp may lose another a year just trying to pick up the system.

I think you maybe make an exception for an upperclassman (Silas Redd or Jordan HIll) who wants to come here for one year to help with depth or fill gaps becuase we are under the scholarship limit for 2012 , but the fan in me kind of wishes the seniors stick it out with Penn State. I would feel kind of dirty if Michigan pulled a key starter from PSU.

Zettel is only a redshirt

Zettel is only a redshirt freshman.  Penn State is pretty good at developing d-linemen.  His technique and strength should be a year better and I thought they also play a 4-3.  Transition wouldn't be that bad.

Transition is a lot harder than you make it sound.

Every team coaches their DL to play a different way depending on scheme and personal style. Need to learn the playbook. Scheme is much more than just personnel groups like 4-3 as it includes philosophy like attack vs. read and react, gaps & alignment. Not to mention moving and adjusting to new school and facilities during fall football camp.

I don't think he would have much if any advantage at all over Wormley, & Strobel. If he is not contributor this year, you are looking at a kid who becomes a RS sophomore in 2013 without any real game experience.  Unless the transfer could contribute on the field this year, I think you could recruit a kid in 2013 class that would be more valuable than that.

I understand that USC gives

I understand that USC gives him the best win now situation, but I bet his ultimate goal is the NFL. Would he truly risk a starting spot for a chance to compete in a loaded backfield at USC?

Please list the backs that

Please list the backs that compose USC's "loaded" backfield. They have a tiny Curtis McNeal and that's about it. They have no big back at all, so Redd would be perfect.

This idea actually isn't half bad.  Methinks Fitz is done for some time, and think about how much an elite back will improve our chances of success this season.

He wants to play in the NFL?  How's this as a marketing strategy to NFL scouts: play the season opening game against Alabama.  No other school can offer that.

Redd has already played

Redd has already played against Alabama... twice. Once in a starter role and one in a backup role. Both times, he was stuffed. Why would he come and play them yet again only to be stuffed in the backfield yet again?

Being the feature back

Being the feature back alongside Denard in the shotgun is A LOT different than lining up in I behind superstar Matt McGloin.  Different offensive focuses, different opportunities, etc.

Apples and oranges.

Dukes of Hazard-ing it over a car outside of Rick's is a strike.

Getting a DUI on campus a month before the season opener against the defending national champions is striking out looking on three consecutive fastballs down the middle to end the World Series.

I don't wish to trivialize

I don't wish to trivialize what he did at all.  I fully support him being suspended against Alabama.

I'm just saying that in general, the first time a student-athlete gets in trouble with the law (regardless of what it is), the punishment won't be as severe as it would be for a second offense.  Which I think is reasonable - college-age kids will do a lot of idiotic things.  You expect them to be able to learn from when they mess up.

But what precedent do you

But what precedent do you have to support that?  Stonum got a DUI and was suspended one game.  I know it's a different team, but Michael Floyd missed no games after an off-season DUI.

I'm not saying he won't miss time, and it's possible he's out Alabama and one more just to send a message, but from all reports Fitz cooperated with the police and he hasn't had a blemish on his record until then.

If I were to guess, I'd say he misses the first full game at most.

very small number.  And we don't know if they are backups or starters.  Also, they could be all juniors or seniors, who would be the most likely ones to stay.

Here is the post from Black Shoe Diaries plus video of statement

http://www.blackshoediaries.com/2012/7/25/3185915/penn-state-players-reaffirm-commitment-redd-absent

I'm sure someone will break down who each player in the picture. Notably, Jordan Hill was not there either, but he is a rep for PSU at Media Days like Redd. John Urschel was there though (also a PSU rep at Media Days).

Good for these select few players at Penn State. No one, including myself, would have blamed them for leaving Penn State after all these terrible things happened, but it shows their character by staying true to their school.

I doubt they lose many players now.

The window to leave before the season is so short. The normal reaction would be to stick it out with your teammates. It may be a different story after this season, when players have had the time to make a decision not based on emotion. O'Brien may want to play his entire roster vs Ohio U, so they can't transfer during the season and be immediately eligible.

I'm not quite sure how my posting a video is mocking

them. Are you a member of the perpetually anguished class?

Now that this has happened, I hope they turn as one and collectively flip the rest of us off, and move on to a new future. I would be happy to go help rebuild that team (as long as I could wear Maize).

Also, it isn't the football team, that is why there are skinny fellows.

I think people want to treat everything that happens as part of

the whole. I can understand that. I can also understand people feeling it is too soon. I also laughed at Shane Morris doing a photoshopped handstand where that statue used to stand.

The players and the new coaching staff had nothing to do with it and deserve to be treated like crap, just as we would treat any other respected foe.

If a video on a blog is going to bother them, wait until someone across the line of scrimmage starts in about the goings on in their locker room.

Only 25?

That's less than 30% of the team. Even if the other 65 aren't leaving (and I doubt they would), you've got to wonder how much time they're devoting to the upcoming season at this point. A lot of those guys are fielding calls from other coaches telling them how bad Penn State is likely to be, and every time they turn on ESPN it's more of the same. I'd be pretty down if I was in their shoes.

O'Brien on Mike & Mike

PSU's new JoePa Lite was on M&M this morning and was asked about coaches recruting his players.  He mentioned the names of a few coaches (Ferentz was among them) who had contacted him to tell him they were interested in his guys and would be recruiting them.  He also implied that he felt some other guys who had contacted his players were classless, since they had not contacted him to discuss it.

He did NOT mention Lane Kiffin among the coaches who had contacted him.

Also, at one point in the interview, when asked why a player would play at Penn State, O'Brien answered, "Where else can you play in front of 108,000 fans six or seven times a year?"  To which I started screaming at the radio, "MICHIGAN!  ONLY IT'S 110,000+!"

The whole classless statement

The whole classless statement sounds very Dantonio-an to me. I understand why he may think it's unfair, but IMO he should think about the kids on his team who had dreams of winning championships and bowl games only to have that opportunity ripped away by people lied to them. I think it's completely fair for coaches to recruit his players and give them another opportunity if they do choose. Some will clearly disagree with me, and I can see the other side of the token. Just my two cents.

There is a vast gulf between

considered amateurs and essentially professionals. If I had a program of my own, classes on speaking to the media and other idiots would be a requirement. I think some kind of seminar might have helped here, but taken as part of the grand scheme of what has happened at PSU, what the players say is the least of their worries.

Putting yourself in a current PSU player's situation, what would you do?  I'm curious to hear people's thoughts.  Assuming I played for the team I have loved my entire life (Mich), I can't possibly imagine going anywhere else and wearing another uniform other than the maize 'n blue.

I'd stay but that assumes a few things. A) I am not good enough to go pro B) I was an upperclassman C) I grew up a Michigan fan

If I was only a year in I'd leave, if I was looking to go pro I'd leave to get better exposure, if I wasn't a fan before I'd leave. Its a very personal decision obviously but those would be my first criteria

I think most will stay,

I think most will stay, especially seniors who have more to  lose if they go.  Younger players will consider leaving and they will certainly lose a bunch of their most talented younger players who have most of their careers ahead of them and want to compete for things, and win.  That will likely result in PSU fielding a decent team this year and not again for a long while.

I would stay, and I think

I would stay, and I think mose would (and will).  Entering freshmen excepted, since they have virtually no investment in Penn State at all yet, there's a lot more to leaving a program than the football stuff.  If you've been in college for a year or more, you have a lot of close friends you see every day.  You have roommates, and a house/apartment/dorm you like.  You might have a professor or advisor you've gotten comfortable with.  You might have a girlfriend or love interest you've spent time pursuing (or multiple).  You have your favorite restaurants, bars and maybe the place you get your haircut.  You have a schedule that you're used to.  You likely have a degree you're pursuing.  And - you have this school spirit you've developed after about 20 minutes of living on campus that's hard to turn off.

Not every kid has all of these things, but they all have most of them.  Point is, transfering schools is a lot bigger than bowl games and depth charts.  For a few guys, those will trump the rest.  But not for most.

Depends

Am I any good? Honestly, any good player that would definitely start for another major FBS team is probably stupid to stay.  More marginal players are probably better off staying because they are going to get more playing time now than they would have otherwise.

Stay Or Go

"Putting yourself in a current PSU player's situation, what would you do?"- nickbob

If I have formed bonds, made friends and invested myself in the team and the school, I would stay,  and I think that is part of the reason why these players made that video. This is the very question for which these players are providing an answer. Through all this, that team has probably bonded in a way that few groups ever do even in adverse situations, for they personally have nothing to hide and nothing to lose at this point. It would seem to me that - expectations gone - the only thing they really have now is their loyalty to the school. I think there's something to be said for expressing that loyalty in the most trying circumstances.

I think current players are

I think current players are likely to stay but I'm sure there will be some coaches who view this as college football's first free agency period.  Personally I don't see how you can keep locker room morale up by going after PSU players but coaches have to make that decision themselves.  Recruits are a whole other beast, I expect PSU to be left with a MAC level class for 2013.

That assumes that a person

That assumes that a person will actually get a better education at PSU than a MAC school.  That's not necessarily true.  If we're being honest, the quality of education you get probably doesn't vary much from one university to the next.  The real "difference" between schools is probably just the amount of prestige associated with having a degree from the school.  In the case of PSU, that prestige has been tarnished by this scandal (which may be unfair, but it's reality).

If I'm an HR director looking through resumes and I see "Penn State University," I'm probably going to think of the scandal and the creepy cult of JoePa that exists there.  It might well influence me not to hire that candidate.  Even though it's unfair, our minds can make those kinds of snap judgments.  The entire PSU alumni pool has to live with this albatross.

And all those

JoPa worshipers contributed to the culture that allowed him so much power. And they did NOT sit silently...they continually rallied behind unchecked power, and exacerbated a culture that allowed JoPa to excuse away a monster's behavior.
So while I can sympathize with those uninvolved and ignorant to the atrocities, that myopic and heartless comment is inexcusable...and shows exactly the culture that existed...and why the NCAA needed to punish everyone.
Those people need to wake the fuck up.

I bet Rodriguez is one of the coaches that isn't asking the PSU coach before he recruits his players.  He sounded pretty pissed that they didn't show the respect to at least ask him first even though he can't say no.

From Twitter--

No Penn State players will attend Big Ten media days. Silas Redd, John Urschel and Jordan Hill had been scheduled to attend.

I wouldn't necessarily read

I wouldn't necessarily read anything into that. If I were their coach, I'd probably want to spare them from that experience with the media, too.

That's true but we were told

That's true but we were told by PSU that the reason Redd and others werent at the "rally round the flag" assembly today was because they WERE at said media days or at least en route.

All (legitimate) outrage

All (legitimate) outrage aside, good on them. Nice to see them pledging to stick with their school through tough times. After all, neither they nor anyone currently associated with the football program did anything wrong.

After a year?

Can they still transfer next year when they get curbstomped all season? Or when they wake up and realize they were recruited by a bunch of creeps? The fans are flipping delusional. I ran into a PSU fan that truly believes all was well with Joe, and that Joe couldn't watch over Sandusky. It wasn't his job to watch Jerry.

redd to USC

if silas Redd goes to holywood (U$C) and has two years of playing time, what does this do fot the kid from Joliet ( Ty Issac) . I would think he would re think his verbal to kiffin and take a look at brady Hoke and michigan. Beside I see that they have the second ranked RB from California. it lok very crowed in that back field.

An Illini blog suggests that

Penn State Redshirt freshman Right Tackle and Cactus product Ryan Nowicki has decided to transfer and is highly likely headed to Illinois.
