I feel like an idiot because I can't embed a video. FAIL. Sorry guys.
8 hours later..i think its time to call in the reliever
For the record, Josh Groban applied, and was NOT admitted to the Michigan School of Music
That will be a good conversation starter somewhere this weekend.
Along with everyone else. At least that has-been is getting some spin from Michigan fans and people making fun of Michigan.
That is hilarious.
is funny.
Well played, Josh Groban, well played.
Move along. Nothing to see here. I was trying to embed the video of Clark Griswold freaking out in Christmas Vacation about not getting his x-mas bonus but, for some reason, its not working. Damn. That is one funny scene!
And for that you are docked 1,000,000 MGoPoints. Congrats
Josh Groban, for someone in the "inspirational" (or whatever you call it) genre, is actually a funny, self-deprecating guy. He was in that "I F*'d Matt Damon" video with Kimmel and I've read an interview or two he's done.
That said, it seems like he's making fun of people who like his songs, specifically his older ones. I find it "telling" that he references Welcome to the Jungle in his tweet, when he's stated his favorite song ever is November Rain*. Seems like he's putting on a pose, which I find annoying. "I Raise You Up" is his music. Unless he's truly embarrassed by what he's produced, why make fun of others who like it? That's weird.
(*How do I know this, when I've heard precisely one of his songs in my life? His most recent album was produced by Rick Rubin, who works with some of my favorite bands, like Metallica, Beastie Boys, Slayer, etc, so I read a couple of recent interview the two of them did).
That's a possibility, but I didn't read it so much as "mocking" in a negative way. It's his song, I doubt he looks down on it.. I saw the joke as stressing the fact that the song wasn't very timely in 2010, rather than really disaparaging Rich Rod for crying. That being said, it is a bit of a jab at RR, but it seems fairly good natured to me...
That being said, my girlfriend is a huge Josh Groban fan and might be able to shed some light on this.
As someone posted in another thread, USC got together with Bill Withers to sing the song, "Lean on Me" which is 30+ years old. That was pretty cool, and a song fits when it fits - hell, at Michigan Stadium, we play "Seven Nation Army". That song is considered fairly new, but is older than "I Raise You Up."
I'm sure he was trying to tell a joke (generally speaking) but seemed to be making fun of people who like his "old" stuff, and indeed, looking down on his old stuff. His new stuff with Rubin is apparently somewhat different (I just checked Amazon, and it seems like his fans are pretty split on his new direction, http://tinyurl.com/237m9cs), so I think he is being a bit of poseur ("Hey, I'm tough - I like Welcome to the Jungle! Did you hear I'm being produced by the guy who produced Johnny Cash's last 5 albums?"), and I can't stand poseurs. If you like adult contemporary music, which I don't, fly your freak flag and go for it. To each his own.
Now, if RR played "Happy Days are Here Again", maybe I'd go with it being too old school. But he didn't.
I'll say this. And this being said, I'll say that.
When b list, crappy pop stars are calling out your manhood... its time to find a new profession, its not even like it was ludacris... this is Josh Groban! Hire someone who doesn't cry at bad pop songs.
Genrally, people who make comments about others' manhood are usually insecure about theirs, fyi. Not to mention RR played D1 football. I'd say that's pretty manly.
I hope you like Bolivia...
Are you implying that he's going to fade into bolivian?
I wish that you would leave.
Ludacris:
Ludicrous:
[loo-di-kruhs]
I think that he was actually referring to Ludacris here
Pretty sure he cried because he's proud of his team and he's sick of people ripping down and trying to take away everything he's accomplished, not because of the song. But thanks for playing.
Apparently LUDACRIS IS THE AUTHORITY!!!!
When b list, crappy pop stars are calling out your manhood... its time to find a new profession
So I guess when Justin Bieber called out Tom Brady, it was time for Brady to pack it in.
Time to go
When your comment gets Gremlin pos banged.
So getting emotional because a song reminds someone who is going through one of most difficult times in his career which is negatively affecting his family in a real way, that he has amazing people around him that have and will continue to support him and be a pillar of strength and a light in the darkness for him, is not being a man?
Wow, you're quality guy. I can't help but think that when you die Bo is gonna greet you with a knock out punch to the face.
It was the elephant in the room and he addressed the topic. I am sure everyone there as well as people not there were glad he spoke on the topic.
By the way lumber jack have you ever been a leader of men?
Actually within the larger context what he said and did was just fine.
Keep it up champ, I can tell you're going places.
My first reaction to reading this was...who the fuck is Josh Grobin?
He is the secret child between Barbara Streisand & Barry Manilow
This is not a knock on RR picking the song, but I just wish I could get a snapshot of Barwis face when that song came on!
Probably looked like the face you made the first time you changed a diaper.
Jeez. When even Josh freaking Groban of all people is piling on, you know it's bad. That's a low point in life. Ouch.
Is Twitter confusing to anyone else or is it just me? With all of the @ and # and weird looking links,
You're not the only one. I seriously don't understand Twitter. Nor do I care enough to spend the effort and time to try to.
@ is the account name. It helps find tweets for that person. In this case @joshgroban is the poster, but if you add that to a tweet, he will see it. # basically signifies a category. If I posted "#Michigan beats #Illinois 67-65 in 3OT. #FootballScores" anyone searching for Michigan, Illinois, or general football scores will find that.
Wow. That's actually very simple and quite handy.
Thanks for demystifying Twitter for me.
to demystify Twitter. I rode on your coattails, expending even less. Thank you both.
Susan Boyle called. She said she'd like you to stop using her style.
as he precede's her. /pissed I know this
She is much older than him. She didn't just start singing a couple of years ago in my E-pinion. I can picture her in some swanky British pub singing her face off before Groban was even a sperm.
Here is her discovery:

Embed is disabled and I am too lazy to engineer it for this...
You must have forgotten about Susan Boyle's early recordings.
Rich Rod's speech las night is officially embarrassing; Congrats Foster for being ahead of the curve on this one. The rest of the speech was good though.
Let people make fun. Who cares? F--- them.
I agree he was probably being genuine, but the song is bad, and wasn't what i expected to hear when I looked it up. He could have picked a much better song. Or just left the song part out.
for his taste in music or inspiration?
Whatever inspires his team. And there is no doubt in my mind that these kids support him and he is their coach throughout this. They play for him and for each other.
las noches?
You know I don't speak Spanish.
I'm trying to say this is the least offensive way possible, but I don't understand why RR would be talking about how hard his life is (hence the talking about Groban song). Shouldn't that event be about honoring the senior players?
He got choked up talking about raising up the young men that he and other coaches have invested in and they're committed to raising up the young men on the team. Then he turned the concept around and gave a nod to the way the players have raised and lifted up him by sharing their accomplishments (and anyone who invests in the younger generation can agree that their success lifts them up). It was a good tribute to the players and how they encourage the coaches indirectly through their own success on and off the field.
RR made jokes about the hot seat and gave a classy speech overall. He expressed a large amount of thanks to everyone and the purpose of playing the song was a tribute to the people who have been encouraging the staff and they've raised them up in all the difficulty. He also shared that the players deserve people focusing on the positive more than the negative. Awards banquets are always cheesy (and he acknowledged it was cheesy but fitting). Made a great point about all eras being unified as well - "One Michigan, Proud of Every Era". He wasn't begging for his job and anyone who claims he was is a liar.

Click the "Rich Rodrigue Speech" link
Listen to the actual speech and tell me whether or not it dishonored the solemnity of the Bust. I don't think it did.
So, I'm guessing we won't see Groban on the sidelines next year at the Big House?
Damnit, did we burn the Cindarellaman bridge?
I just listened to You Raise Me Up by this Groban guy. Man, that's one sappy, shitty song.
But no offense to RR though. Whatever floats your boat I guess. At least he is sincere!
Agree with you 100%, on both points.
so what I am thinking is that she played it once and he really wasn't listening and she asked him what he thought and he was all like 'yah thats cool' and b/c he wasn't really paying attention he had no idea what song it was and now everytime she plays it he has to pretend he likes it or otherwise his wife will know that he doesn't pay attention to her
just a guess
Lighten up guys. It was funny.
Yeah, if anything, the joke is that it's an old song, not that its "girly" or "embarassing."
/Frickin' hate the jock jams/hip hop/country/deathmetal/hipster/emo/indie crowd that's cynical about anything they don't personally like.
Exactly. Why is everyone's assumption here that Groban thinks his own song sucks?
No matter how hard I try, I cannot listen to more than 5 seconds of this guys music. Maybe rich rod was crying because his music is just that bad...
Should we get Harbaugh to Punch Groban now?
should've chosen somebody who would be more appreciative of the free pub. Michael Bolton, perhaps? Surprisingly funny- I assumed Groban eschewed laughter and jokes for "good cries."
no shit if a fruit like groban is making fun of us it's bad. i think we are turning into the joke of college football. firing RR is only going to make it worse. All the fire RR people need to be careful for what you ask for.
Maybe you should sit the next couple plays out, Champ...
Let's see that pencil-necked Groban kid tweet while he's being skullfucked by Mike Barwis.
You just sealed for your fate, Groban.
With MY hand!
I need more humor. +1!
Josh Groban is a hater....of himself
Should have went with 'Drop the World' by Eminem/Lil Wayne.
everytime I talk about Michigan Football I get choked up too.
Michigan Football is the wind beneath my wings... snif
I remember the time when crying got you all the ladies, just ask my fiance.
I heart Groban's hair...(sarcasm)
Groban is making a joke. Remember those things? Someone should tweet him to use a "/s" so people won't have to be "officially embarassed" if he references Rich Rod again.
I think Mike Barwis's glare and disdain for that Groban song could have bent the soundwaves in mid-tune and morphed them into percussionist guitar riffs of Metallica's Orion tune.
But who's Josh Groban? Maybe I'm old, but I've never heard him. More to the point, why does BlueinDC getting twitter blasts from him? I don't get Twitter (too old I gues). I can't imagine giving a sh**. I just don't care.
Re. Groban - You're not missing much. He's lame. He sings really sappy songs that middle aged ladies (and apparently RR) sit around and cry to while they listen.
Re. Twitter - Also kinda lame, IMO. I don't get it either and I'm under 30. Actually, someone posted a nice little post above that explains Twitter in a nutshell quite well.
is a floppy-haired oversized moppet who uses his looks to charm women (and non-traditional men) into listening to his music. See also: Michael Buble, but without the floppy hair.
He really should be thanking RR. This is the most press he's gotten in 3 years.
Denard 4 Heisman to Josh Groban mocking our coach.
Other Big Ten schools piping in this damn song whenever they're beating us...the bright side is he could've picked a song like Puff Daddy's "Public Enemy #1"
Lets go,
thats that beat right here
who should I fear
throw your hand in the air
socialise, get down, let your soouulll lead the way
cause i'm that enemy that you can't see

This is bad. It is like really bad. He really played that song and held hands with Frank Beckman? This is really bad. God bless you Coach Rod, but.......
This is bad..
And his heart is full of love for his family and the kids he has taken responsibility for?
Who is Josh Groban and why do you follow him on twitter?
Idk about that song choice RR...
my Nana really likes him.
Rodriguez obviously took the song to heart. To the uninformed observer, the whole situation sounds a little bit funny. When did we get to the point where we can't have a chuckle at our own expense every once in a while?
Oh, wait, our fan base has always been that way.
No one would be talking about it now.
And the Theatre of the Absurd that is Michigan football continues.
Fuck Josh Groban. If you can sing that song the last thing you should do is go about mocking someone for listening to it. This shit has me about ready to fight.
whoa... ez there Mike. If anything, I think Groban is mocking that everyone is making such a big deal over the song.
Its just gotten absurd. The hatred for this man is something that just disgusts me. The twisting of everything and the shit he has been handed is so frustrating. I feel like I have been there with him through it because I have been so attached to this team since childhood. I think he is a good man and regardless if people like him as a coach or not does not excuse this garbage. Like Terry Foster today. I just want to go off on this guy. Anyway, it is what it is. Go Blue
Agreed 100%. It's a sad, sad day when folks line up with Snyder, Foster, and Rome and think they're supporting Michigan in the process. Even if you want RR fired, I'm not sure how mocking him or the song he chose represents "The Leaders and the Best."
I do believe that in general what goes around comes around, and I'll celebrate the day when Foster and his ilk reap what they've sown. Fucking assholes. (sorry, but I'm so fucking sick of seeing richrod treated like this.)
Mocked by the lamest wuss in music. Great for recruiting.
if Dantonio were to play a song with religious overtones, he would heralded for being a man of faith
RR plays it and he's a giant sissy
in fact i wouldn't give a rat's
I think the mass would view Dantonio as a good guy if he did that. I also agree we as a fanbase would joke about it. But I think the reasons are different. I think Rod is genuine. But people have an agenda from this picture that has been painted. Dantonio would be mocked by us because he is a fake douchebag that nobody but those suckers in east lansing take seriously. And thats not a biased statement. Dantonio is a fraud. His actions on player misconduct this year proved it once again among other things. .
Dantonio is corny all the time. He has a cheesy one liners prepared for his post-game interviews every game. MSU fans have no leg to stand on if they're heckling you about this.
I assure you that, had Dantonio gone Grobin, this board would have exploded.
And rightfully so. That guy's a dick.
This is a completely different situation.
/.5s
Jim Rome just piled on to our coach on his show taking this thing nationwide. But if our own fans do it, then how can I bitch about Rome. Man, this is getting ugly beyond belief but it's really a disgrace the Michigan fans started the pile.
For what it's worth, Rome said.. "what top recruit worth his salt would want to play for him?" When is the fanbase gonna say ENOUGH? The display by Michigan fans is disgraceful. Good thing his players show more loyalty than on here.
I've heard Groban is one of those guys that doesn't really care for the type of music he makes. But you can't really blame him for doing it since that terrible music has made him millions of dollars.
I've also heard that Groban likes his ladies to pop.
If Groban is joking, it isn't clear to me what's so funny.
BTW, I made the mistake of listening to Groban do a duet with someone (Celine Dion?). Instead of trying to create harmony, Groban just drowned her out.
Not that I was ever a fan.
>>TW, I made the mistake of listening to Groban do a duet with someone (Celine Dion?). Instead of trying to create harmony, Groban just drowned her out.<<
So you are saying Groban has done some good things then *rimshot*
RR says something nice about the dude's song and he thanks him by kicking him when he's down. Classy. Like we don't don't have enough dickheads making pop music.
His music blows. Anyway, does anyone think that he's a dead ringer for the chick from Nightbreed?
That song is one of the most cheese-ball lame things I've ever heard in my life. I'm not as down on RR as some are, but I bet Harbaugh listens to way better music than this, fwiw.
Harbaugh has John Mayer playing on the reg
he is a mockery of the spirit & message of the song. My mom asked for his CD for Christmas ... she is getting the gal from England.
Might we being a little oversensitive right now? This struck me as a harmless joke, albeit not a very funny one.
? I'm ok with it. At least he didn't say his favorite movie was Sex in the City.
No, YOU are so five years ago Josh Groban. You should be excited that someone actually knows your music you ungrateful piece of....
Lloyd Carr qoutes Kipling. RR quotes Josh Groban (whoever the hell that is). Just sayin . . . .
I've said it numerous times here, I loved that we had a real intellectual philosopher-coach in Lloyd. That was awesome, and a perfect fit for Michigan. He's gone. I don't give a crap that RR ain't Lloyd. RR has proven himself to be an absolutely upstanding guy who invests everything he has to help his players. He works his ass off, and he is humble despite getting dumped on continuously. What the fuck difference does it make if likes crappy music? That's what I'm saying.
How can he possibly show emotion like this if he is a win-at-all costs guy? - which people were accusing him of being after the Dorsey and Feagin nonsense.
Now he shows that he really does care about the kids under his wing, and the UNACCEPTABLE crowd flips out. Now they think he's too soft or something.
I'm not happy about the losing records and the NCAA violations, but this is just getting to be too much. RR can't do anything right in the eyes of some people.
At this point, I hope RR stays and I hope he goes 12-0 next year just to shut these haters up.
I think that we have to keep RR no matter what now. How fun will it be when a Groban-listening, tear-shedding, no-defense-having, West Virginian turns the corner with the program and starts walloping some of these schools that have been enjoying our struggles? Beating our rivals again will be fun. Beating them with a coach that they had previously branded as a moron will be even more fun.
Who gives two shits about what Josh Groban has to say?
I believe this will gain me much cred (and mgopoints).
