Gregg Henson: Wheatley is a lock and Singletary longshot to return

Submitted by Jim Harbaugh on

Henson says his source has told him that Wheatley is a lock for the RB coach at M. He knows it might be a small step back (or lateral), but see's the potential to be a heach coach or OC with time. He will join the staff sometime this week.

Also, noted that Chris Singletary is not expected to be retained according to his sources. A bit surprising because Singletary has tweeted many times regarding M in the time since Harbaugh has taken over.

EDIT: The comments on Singletary's film evaluating skills has been removed from Henson's post so I removed it as well.

That Singletary part is kind of weird to me.  Doesn't he more or less do a lot of the organization, paperwork, co-ordination stuff?  Doesn't evaluating film go to the coaches?  Maybe I just had wrong impression of his job.  But it's not like UM has been recruiting no name fliers.  A lot of prospects UM has signed have been recruited by other big name programs.

Yeah I just saw that, seems like he completley made that up.

He established goodwill with the Harbaugh stuff, but ever since shows you why he has such a bad rep. (Rosen coming, Greg Roman as the OC, and now this)

Sometimes I think he just throws shit on the wall hoping it sticks, this being a great example.

But at the same time, he's been right on about the past two caching searches.

We have heard reports and read stories that Urban will grill candidates during interviews and really test their knowledge.  Jim is most likely doing the same thing and Chris is potentially a casualty.

"He (Singletary) is not a longshot to return"  That says to me that he has a good shot to return.  not a longshot=short shot which translates to a good shot return.

Do recruits know who Tyrone Wheatley is/was I wonder, I know with youtube it's super easy to pull up him running away from opposing defenses. Which was often. I'm 27 tomorrow and he was probably the first player I could name growing up, along with Hayes and Toomer. Just hope the recruits know how great he used to be, I mean he kept Biakatukia on the bench fergodsakes.

Doesn't the article state:

"Waiting to get updated info on Singletary, now hearing he is not a longshot to return, who knows, I'll update when I hear more"

I take that to mean he is likely to return? Also, what kind of amateur BS "reporting" is this?  He actually states "who knows".  Well, presumably the person making the claim I would think.

I think JH just wants the team to be introduced to the assistants first before all the media gets to introduce them.    Hopefully after tonight, the speculation over coaches will be over.

Whereas Henson was spot on about the Brandon/Hoke firings and Harbaugh hire, I think he's dead wrong about Singletary. His sources are very mistaken on this one. Singletary has been an important part of the program and it would not serve Harbaugh well to NOT retain him. I believe Chris Singletary will be in the fold in 2015.

wrong.  He has to be a big asset to the incoming staff with his huge amount of experience and contacts among the local and out of state high schools.  I'm sure the coaches can set their own criteria for the type of players they want.  But having a guy like Singletary around to help them find the guys would be invaluable.

If Singletary gets axed, Sam Webb will have very few, if any sources inside the AD. Serves him right for keeping Tom Beaver employed after he took over the site. We call that karma.
