Gregg Henson: Wheatley is a lock and Singletary longshot to return

Submitted by Jim Harbaugh on

Henson says his source has told him that Wheatley is a lock for the RB coach at M. He knows it might be a small step back (or lateral), but see's the potential to be a heach coach or OC with time. He will join the staff sometime this week.

Also, noted that Chris Singletary is not expected to be retained according to his sources. A bit surprising because Singletary has tweeted many times regarding M in the time since Harbaugh has taken over.

EDIT: The comments on Singletary's film evaluating skills has been removed from Henson's post so I removed it as well.

maybe webb is right and wrong, maybe harbaugh just wanted drevno to interview him since harbaugh already knows enough about him and it's important that the OC and RB coach are on the same page, and he isn't even going to interview with harbaugh. therefore he hasn't interviewed with harbaugh and the contact could be getting finalized at red robin

Sam has denied that the contract is signed, but hasn't really disputed the other reports, has he?

It seems like Webb just wants to avoid the appearance that Wheatley, a friend if his, is saying it's a done deal before everything is signed, sealed, and delivered.

Sam is being super conservative after he said Shannon Turley was on board.  I don't think we need to worry about Wheatley.  He wouldn't fly out if he wasn't wanting the job.  I'm sure they will find a number that suits everyone.

yeah brian is being conservative too.  but how often does someone have dinner with their potential employer before having any kind of interview?  seems like a done deal to me.

In the professional world, it's very common to take job candidates out to dinner the night before their interviews... an opportunity to get to know each other more informally, show off the town, etc.

Granted, they already know each other, and well, Red Robin.  So yah, done deal.

"STAY OFF MY LAWN" in me, but even though the food is fairly above average there, I despise eating there because of those stupid baskets.  Give me a plate, so I can put my sandwich down on a flat surface and it doesnt fall apart.  This isn't the county fair, or a knock off Dairy Queen. GIVE ME A PLATE (and if you ask for a plate, they bring you an app plate because thats all they have...so annoying

And since that's the worst thing I have to complain about today, I'm gonna go ahead and shut up and be thankful for what I have

I don't remember how the prices broke down at all, just that the one time I went it worked out to around $25 for two people. There are other places around town here (not fast food) that taste just as good, if not better, and cost less. I'll go with the equally or better priced burger that is also equally or better tasting.

People (Webb) are getting caught up in semantics here.  Any time and any setting you are meeting with a potential employer -- whether its dinner, drinks, or a formal in-office setting, its an interview.  They are getting a feel for you as a person.  And frankly, going out to eat with someone is a lot better guage of how that person is going to be to work with than some formal interview.

For whatever reason Sam Weeb is getting caught up in saying "it wasn't an interview" but I call bullshit.  That was an interview.  Probably one of several Ty is going to have.

absolutely coming. Then he changed his mind. I am assuming the friendship may have trumped what he may have seen as the benefit of being at a program like Michigan vs Kentucky.

I think that's why Sam and Brian are being very cautious and Sam has to be aware that Harbaugh may be mad if he releases infromation in advance because it could appear it came from Wheatley even if it didn't.

I think it's very close to a done deal. They have the player meeting today and I'm sure they would like to introduce the coaching staff. Taking so much time with Wheatley would be burning time they could be talking to others. I don't see how Wheatley doesn't end up with the position.

Sam did say today that TJ and Tyrone are very close and while he didn't say it was a gut feel, he believe that TJ will come to Michigan if his dad is here.

Hard to leave Bay Area - it's pushing 70° here today!

Look at the $ and adulation JH got to come home. Turley would get neither, and it wouldn't be returning to his hometown either.

Probably a nice little "We absolutely do appreciate you" pay bump would be enough to make a guy look around and decide Palo Alto looked like a pretty sweet deal after all... I'd be very interested in someone who utilizes the same techniques though. 49ers season was ruined by injuries (in addition to the in fighting) - so is their guy really using the cutting edge injury prevention techniques that Turley is celebrated for?

Im not sure if it's about Henson being right or wrong but its a matter of sources. Webb's source is Wheatley himself. I cant imagine that's also the case for Henson. Henson can be "right" in having his predictions and reporting vindicated but Webb has established himself as a very trusted source with many inside connections. Though he's in th process of maybe doing so, Henson has yet to demonstrate this over any long period of time and about matters outside of Harbaugh related coaching hires. Unless Im missing something which I may be, but I dont think this is reason to knock Webb.

Honestly, is he really going to spill the beans?  Even if he knows it's a done deal, he might not tell anyone until the formal announcement.  A third party source might be more likely to spill info here.

Sam said this morning that when he heard all the stuff about a "done deal" he contacted TW right away to find out what was going on, and TW's response was "what deal?"

Given that Sam is very open about his long-time friendship with Wheatley, what the hell do you expect him to say? That his long-time friend—who might end up part of the staff—is a liar?

Webb has never said that Wheatley coming to UM was unlikely; to the contrary, he said this morning that he was optimistic and wouldn't be surprised if we heard today one way or the other. He's just not going to burn a source who also happens to be a friend. Why some of you can't understand that is beyond comprehension.

Sam is basically reporting facts. Balas and Fithian tweeted last night that the contract was signed, which obviously is not the case. It will probably still happen, but as of right now, the contract is not signed and they were both wrong.

Everyone seems to be jumping the gun on these things, so they can take credit when it's made official. Kind of like FootballScoop getting credit for "being first to report" the Durkin news.

I don't think people are missing the fact that Wheatley is probably coming; everyone should understand that Wheatley and Webb have a unique relationship and so Webb isn't going to be the one to "break" this story.  But at the same time, I don't necessarily think the "it's a lock" talk was correct until very recently, and who knows if it is even now.  Just because it turns out to be true in the end doesn't mean it was right a couple days ago, and given what happened with Turley I can see why people are a little reserved.

Sam has never denied that Wheatley is likely to be on the staff, quite the opposite, actually. He did deny the report that it was a "done deal" at Red Robin last night.

Edit: I basically repeated what Don said without having read it, my bad. Need to read all replies before replying.

Taking a "I guess we are scoffing at Gregg less these days" leap of faith:

From afar, I always speculated that Singletary must be excellent. Sorry to see him go. I doubt he's irreplaceable, but suspect he'd be very tough for most programs to replace. Hopefully Harbaugh knows one better. I doubt he doesn't.

I don't know what Harbaugh was thinking in October, but I do believe Michigan started targeting him and sending out feelers at that point.  There is no reason to doubt that.  I believe Henson has a credible source within the AD and/or Regents.
