Gregg Henson: Sources- Dave Brandon next domino to fall

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Saw this in the thread below this one.

http://gregghenson.com/new-information-on-the-new-michigan-coach-and-ad/

This was just posted 20 minutes ago. He details his sources (without naming them), talks about the Regents not being DB's corner anymore and that they will not pursue a new HC without a new AD.

My three separate sources tell me that the next domino to fall is Brandon.  He must go before any potential football coach can be approached as he totally botched the Hoke hire, never offering the gig to Miles or either Harbaugh.  As a matter of fact, he never even returned calls to Les Miles when he was interested.  In his mind Hoke was the only option from day one.

The two names surfacing in the AD hunt are Ward Manuel the AD at Uconn and Brad Bates, the current AD at Boston College.

I don't think anyone in the administration is burning the midnight oil on the future of Brandon, Hoke, or the football program.  The truth of the matter is that even the causual poster on this board cares 10X more than anyone in the administration (or the Regents, for that matter) about Michigan football.

... The football program is a MAJOR part of our fundraising campaigns. There are some very rich people who care very much about the success of the football program and I am certain the administration is hearing from them. The admin may not love a football game as much as we do, but they are financially obligated to care more than any of us.

This is absolutely not true.  The two regents that I know personally - one a former classmate, and one a business colleague - are die hard supporters of everything Michigan and avid football fans.  They understand full well how football is part of the Michigan DNA - although only part of it, which is something that some "causual" posters don't get.

I'm not so sure about this story. It sounds made up.  If it is true, it reflects more poorly on the Board of Regent members who are talking about this than it does on Brandon.

Interesting quote
If either one of these gentlemen is hired, the road to a Harbaugh gets much more probable. Both Harbaugh brothers and Miles would take the Michigan job under the stewardship of Bates or Manuel, none of them would come to Michigan under Brandon, so change is imminent. My sources are solid, two respected journalists, one high profile ex-Michigan football star and as I write this a HUGE donor/former Michigan athlete.

Let's take a look at what he said, both sources are respected journalists, and they are both former Michigan athletes.

Source one is also a former Michigan football star.  Who do we know that is both a respected journalist and a former Michigan football star?  Off the top of my head I can name three...though I don't think I'd consider any of them Journalists.  D. Howard, R. Leach, and D. Dierdorf.

He says the second source is a former Michigan althete (implies not football), is also a journalist, and donates huge money.  I dunno, I admit to not following the other sports but I would guess Jalen Rose.

I know for a fact that many former players prefered Bates over Brandon. If you read Bo's Lasting Lessons book, he talks about how Bates would one day make a great AD.

Here's the quote from Bo:

Today Brad Bates is the athletic director at Miami of Ohio-and they love him, there, too. They love him! He's done a marvelous job, and I'm sure you'll be hearing his name when a big job opens up. I would not be surprised if he becomes Michigan's athletic director down the road. If he doesn't, it'll be our loss.

I call BS on this guy.  First he says this:  As a matter of fact, he never even returned calls to Les Miles when he was interested.

Then, after saying DB refused calls from Miles who was INTERESTED, he informs us that his sources know that:  Both Harbaugh brothers and Miles would take the Michigan job under the stewardship of Bates or Manuel, none of them would come to Michigan under Brandon, so change is imminent.

Not buying it.  The regents may want DB out, but Les Miles and Harbaugh are not the reason, and i highly doubt they're staying up late tonight just hoping for a downvote on DB.

I've never understood why people mention John Harbaugh as a possible candidate. He didn't go to Michigan. OK, he's Jim's brother, his dad was an assistant coach here, and he graduated from Pioneer. Is that it? He's been coaching in the NFL for almost 20 years and he's successful and makes 7 mil a year. Michigan isn't going to pay that much and they don't need to to get a good coach. Hell, Saban would probably come here for 7 mil (think he makes 5). I mean, Jim already seems unlikely enough but he obviously loves Bo and Michigan so at least there's some shred of hope there.

If Brian and Co post it or other sources verify I'll believe it but blueralph above said something very interesting although you just joined the site. I just don't know anymore. I would start chanting fire Dave Brandon but I don't want to embarrass my friends.

Color me skeptical . The dude clearly is fishing for page hits. In the same article he says : If either one of these gentlemen is hired, the road to a Harbaugh gets much more probable. Both Harbaugh brothers and Miles would take the Michigan job under the stewardship of Bates or Manuel, none of them would come to Michigan under Brandon, so change is imminent. Both harbaughs and miles!! We don't just get one of them, we get all three! Also in the sme article he says john gruden is looking for homes in Ann Arbor, because he loves bates and Manuel too.

I didn't read that as that all three of them would consider Michigan together.  I read that as saying that if DB is still here, none of them would consider Michigan, but if Bates or Manuel is hired, then we would have a shot at any one of the three.  The writing might be a little sloppy, but I don't think he's just fishing for page hits by saying we'll sign every coach on our wish list.

I'll believe it when I see it. That being said there is some credibility because he specifies to a degree who the sources are, and there is a lot of specifics when it comes to names to be all specualtive bullshit. Until then...
