Fundamentals have been missing for 3 years now.  It will certainly be fun to watch a well coached D tearing up the league.  For all the nay sayers out there, there is a ton of talent on this team, on both sides of the ball.  That talent has not been tapped appropriately yet, but now that Hokemania is here, we will see how good this team really is.

He talks about watching game film from last year to see what they have on defense, but is there also film of practices from last year for the new staff to watch?  Seems like that would be pretty helpful, since probably only half the players on the team ever saw the field last year.

I liked the part where he said that they weren't going to be focusing on fundamentals, that they would be passive and that it wasn't important to be tough, focused, committed, or even to think that football is a team sport.

Note: I have not watched the video.

I liked Mattison stressing that he wants the players to take ownership of the defense, and to realize that it's THEIR defense, not his. Should instill pride, commitment and teamwork.

I'm still incredibly impressed that BH was able to snag Mattison.  Honestly, to ask a guy to leave a NFL job with All-World veterans to come to a rebuilding and struggling D in college is quite a sell job.

Did I see somewhere else though that Mattison's daughter lives in AA and is about to have a kid soon?  Am I making that up?

I heard the same about GMAT's daughter in the area.  That and being very close friends help Coach Hoke.  It's good to have sucessful friends.  It's too bad that RR had some friends that may have held him back.

Ugh. Again with the being bowled over by pretty words on camera in January. UVA's DC was every UVA fan's favorite assistant coach for the way he handled himself and the team during the offseason and on the Hard Knocks-esque TV show the team produced. Tough football.  Aggressive football.  Play with speedSwarm the ball.  All the same platitudes.  Then he turned a respectable, top-one-third defense into one of the worst in the country in just one season, and he went from everyone's favorite assistant to even his most ardent defenders saying he should be given another season for continuity's sake.

So yeah, interviews are bullshit.  I like Mattison for his resume, not because he talks fancy football.

Hear hear.  I'm excited about Mattison as well, but the interview doesn't do a lot for me.  Has there ever been a new defensive coordinator who DIDN'T say that they were going to have an aggressive, swarming defense?

I'm still waiting for a new DC to say "we're going to be passive at all times, and let the plays come to us."
