Greg Mattison Presser Recap

Submitted by MGoShoe on

From Angelique Chengelis' Twitter feed:

  • Mattison presser: "I'm really impressed and excited about the effort of our guys"
  • Mattison says impressed [with] weight gains and losses of some players. Said a couple others did not do what was asked.
  • Mattison said emphasis is on stopping big plays: "can't give up 25, 30 [yard gains]... Home runs"
  • Mattison said spring was about baby steps "we had to teach them as if they hadn't walked before"
  • Mattison said still in "initial phase" of determining top 11. Not ruling out some potential position changes on D
  • Mattison on recruiting to Michigan: "It's not like you're trying to be a salesman. You want him to [love] what's about to happen here."
  • What Mattison says will happen: "We're going to have a Mich [football] program Bo, coach Moeller and coach Carr are going to proud of again"

From Jeff Arnold at CBSSports.com's Wolverines Rapid Reports:

  • The only 2010 games DC Greg Mattison reviewed were against Notre Dame, Michigan State and Wisconsin. He did so because of the physical style he’s trying to improve on, but said Tuesday the Wolverines defensive struggles didn’t sit well. “Anytime there’s places you have been at and they’re not having success, it bothers you.”
  • CBs Troy Woolfolk and J.T. Floyd bring the most experience to the position, but DC Greg Mattison insisted Tuesday no starting positions have been locked up. He said decisions aren’t always made based on height and weight, but that he will play the best 11 players and “the guys that play Michigan defense.”
  • The biggest difference between an NFL QB and a college QB is that younger QBs run when pressured, DC Greg Mattison said Tuesday. “We have to have a middle ground. Our whole belief in playing the run and playing the pass is we have to be aggressive. But we also have to be smart.”
  • After working as the Baltimore Ravens DC for the past two seasons, Greg Mattison said the NFL gave him a new perspective on pressuring the QB. The Wolverines ranked 98th nationally with 1.38 sacks per game, a statistic DC Mattison hopes improves in his new 4-3 scheme.
  • The Wolverines experimented moving NT Mike Martin around in the spring, something DC Greg Mattison said may continue. The plan, Mattison said Tuesday is to put players in the “best possible position to affect the outcome of the ballgame.” Mattison said that may include asking defensive players to switch positions.
  • DC Greg Mattison liked the Wolverines’ effort two days into fall camp, but he said Tuesday the defense that ranked 108th nationally last season “has miles and miles to go.”

Big Will is the player that I will be watching early and often. If he is making plays, then I will know that big things are going to happen this year. I will also know just how inept the defensive staff from last year was.

Love the attitude the new staff has brought to the team so far. Probably one of the biggest things the team needed going into this new season. It is proving effective on the recruiting trail, and I think (and the staff knows) it will translate to the teams performance on the field this year. I'm really excited to see the new look of the team this year. Football is back.
