Green Visits Georgia and Auburn

Looks like 2013 RB Derrick Green visited Georgia on Friday and Auburn on Saturday.

He was quoted as saying his parents both got that feeling about Auburn again.  This is DG's second visit to Auburn.

There is a rumor Derrick could announce as early as this weekend as his team opens on ESPN.   There hasn't been any confirmation on that rumor as he keeps telling most reporters he plans on taking his officials.

I know a quick decision was good for the Maize and Blue but after his second visit to Auburn you have to wonder if they are now leading.

Yeah, that report didn't look so promising for us.

Let's see, parental feelings, bringing parents to a distant school right after another visit...nope, can't think of any other running back recruitment scenarios that have been anything like this one.

DG really loved his visit here. He held a Heisman, hung out with Shoelace, and bonded with players and fellow commits over a three-day period. We have the best OL class, a 5-star QB and (maybe) a 5-star WR in Treadwell. He even got to know Hoke on a personal level.

Until he commits elsewhere, I am gonna believe that we are at the top of his leaders list.

Why? Its already been proven (USC/UNC/Miami) that you can cheat and nothing bad will come of it.  The NCAA is a ball-less organziation unless public pressure (ie PSU) forces them to lower the banhammer.

All that talk about wanting a strong academic institution would appear to be just talk, if he signs with Auburn. Regardless, not to sound negative but until he says otherwise, I see him landing at Auburn. Something just doesn't seem on the level about all of this. It's not just the typical "oh, Auburn paid him a lot of money" stuff, it just doesn't feel right.

when recruits say they're looking for "academics" they usually mean something different than what the average fan means.  Far more often than not, they mean "academic support" rather than "highest rated programs."

It's also worth noting that you can get a pretty good education at most colleges.  Everyone gave Myron Rolle crap for saying he cared about academics while choosing FSU.  Then he won a Rhodes Scholarship.

Comparing FSU to Auburn academically is silly. FSU is well above Auburn in any respectable education rankings. Granted, you can get a great education almost anywhere. But if I want s steak, I'm not going to Taco Bell to get it, I'm going to a steak house. And as far as I know, Michigan has wonderful academic support. Now if he's looking to glide by his time as a student athlete, then you're right, he's looking for something completely different than what Michigan is offering.

being a college football player is.  I don't think it's unreasonable for a recruit to want a place that is going to make sure he stays eligible and on track for a degree.  Whether that's what an institution should want as its academic mission is a separate question, but it's really tiring to hear people disparage 17 year old kids (often from impoverished backgrounds) for not recognizing the clear academic superiority of Michigan to most other schools.  It just sounds petty and snobbish.

I agree with you on this.  Distinguishing between the academic quality of major research universities is also something more common among those who grow up expecting to go to college than those who grow up without many family members and friends who have been.  That's partly why you here "it's great academically" about so many schools that don't seem so great academically to some of us.  To many people, college is college, especially when you're talking about schools with major national name recognition.

[By the way, I'm speaking generally.  I know nothing about Green's background.]

I agree with almost everything you say, and if I came off as downgrading his interest in getting an education, then that is wrong of me. I do however, despise valuing something then choosing the lowest option of the thing you valued. I'm certain when I was 17, I was able to tell you when an opportunity was better one place than another. That's why it bugs me when people use the "he's only 17" argument. Kids today should know far more than I did at their age. Their access to information about these schools is 10 fold what it was in even 2000, when I graduated. Gah! Get the fuck off of my lawn!

Actually, being from the South (but recognizing that Alabama is a long way from Michigan), most everyone in this part of the country recognizes that Auburn is a better school academically than Florida State (but not Florida).  There are lots of rankings but U.S. News & World Report lists Auburn at 82 and FSU at 101.  Neither have Michigan's reputation, of course, but not many schools do.  Plus, anyone with any experience with Auburn will tell you that it is a great college town and like most of the SEC they know how to put on a football game, just like Michigan.

I do think Derrick Green is going to go to Auburn.  They already have an outstanding recruiting class for 2013 and there are several other players that appear to be Auburn leans. If he and one or two others commit, Auburn could wind up with as many as 6 five stars.

Just weighing in.  Usually just lurking.   Thanks.
