I just read this a little while ago. It's really sad that this type of reporting was overshadowed by some bullshit song story.

A shame a coach felt he had to plea to save his job in such a public manner.  Rodriguez decided he wasn't going to be Brandon's backup plan in case Harbaugh tells him to pound sand.

Rodriguez > Brandon

Amazing how revered an AD can be when inaction is his forte.  Dee Hart isn't impressed.

Tight end Jon Bills, who was seriously injured in a car accident six months ago: “So many teammates came to visit me in the hospital that they were sent into my room in shifts. Coach Rodriguez came every day.”

Because it bears repeating:

Tight end Jon Bills, who was seriously injured in a car accident six months ago: “So many teammates came to visit me in the hospital that they were sent into my room in shifts. Coach Rodriguez came every day.”

Not a Michigan Man.  Belittles his players.  Abuses his players.

Not a Michigan Man.

I wonder if it keeps getting repeated it'll start being true one day.

It's sad and telling, IMO , that he has to ask to be accepted as a Michigan Man (whatever that really means).  The criticism of this guy has gotten to the point where it is ridiculous;  anything he does, good or bad, is grounds for the UNACCEPTABLE crowd to start flipping out.

I'm as unhappy as the next person about the losses and NCAA violations, but things are just getting out of hand.

Jeez man, if you were treated the way he's been treated, would you consider yourself all that well-accepted?  Like someone else said, if he'd gotten up there and said "I'm a Michigan Man" the same people would be bashing him for his presumptuousness.

Unfortunately, the case isn't being made by his actions.  Well, it is to me - I do consider myself a Rich Rodriguez fan.  But he's been painted as a win-at-all-costs philistine, and that's largely been done by a crowd of irony-deficient clowns who want him gone for not winning enough.  And no amount of hospital visits or Mealer stories can change their minds.

No matter what Rich Rod Says or does he will be bashed by the bashers that are making thier entire living solely on bashing him.  If Brandon keeps him, he could go 11-1 and they will continue to bash him after every press conference and call for his head on the chopping block after the one loss.

The only chance, and its probably not possible, is to stop listening to the bash.

97.1 is no longer a preset in my cars.

I think of a Michigan Man as not so much an achievable status, but instead a goal for all Michigan - affiliated wo/men to aspire to.  Bo, Yost, Ford, Ward, etc - they all embodied so many good things - its impossible for one person to demonstrate all of those characteristics all of the time.

So - I think him suggesting that he wants to be a Michigan Man - not that he is one - shows that he understands becoming a Michigan Man is a lifelong journey - it's not an overnight thing.

Guard Steve Schilling: “As Coach Schembechler said, ‘Those who stay will be champions.’ We may not have the rings to show for it, but in my eyes, we are all champions.”

No one could have said it better.  These seniors may have lost more than they won, but, they set a championship example for their younger teammates.  Thank you for staying and leading!

Yeah this group is special. When they first arrived on campus i am sure they were thinking of winning a couple conference championships, not all the things they have went through here the last few years. Sure they could have transferred like Boren but they decided to stay here and work and give their all. Never even thought about complaining

but I couldn't concentrate today.  All I was writing in my head was a letter to Brandon, a letter to RichRod, and then I realized the only way I could help was write a screenplay so more than just us MgoBloggers and his team and his family know what he's all about.  Poor guy.  He only wants the drama on the field.  I wish all those journalists (and I use the term loosely) would admit they're writing fiction.  I will stop my rant now and write a play about something pleasant.  Like WWII.  (It was only caused by insanity, not pettiness and spite.)

Oh. Sorry.  Pollyanna is back.  Can't write his story until we know the happy ending.  And I still hope his happy ending will be at Michigan.

Pure ignorance in those folks right there!

Can you clarify to whom you are referring here?  I'm thinking you didn't mean to say the seniors were exhibiting pure ignorance -- but I've got my finger on the neg bomb trigger and its itching.

Re: Zac Ciullo who is going to M Law School...

“I’ve already used all the attorneys I need,” said Rodriguez...“I hope I never need to use him.”

Then after Ciullo's moving speech:

“Wow, he’s good...I could have used you.”

After all Coach Rod has been through, he's still able to laugh at himself.  That's character.

His Dudeness

December 3rd, 2010 at 8:27 PM ^

After reading what Bills had to say I am sickened by the fact that ESPN and all the local media outlets only reported on what they thought was a "sissy" song.

Wow... seriously, THAT is what the media outlets took from such a wonderful night... Not being sarcastic at all when I say I am shocked. Truly deplorable.

MGoTarHeel

In reading the comments section there, it just reiterates to me that people will spin anything to fit what they already believe. It is very rare to actually change someone's mind with facts, rationale, or new information. The fact that someone could read that and think honestly to themselves

Geez, 'I’ve already used all the attorneys I need...I hope I never need to use him.'? Does RR ever think about anyone other than himself?

is mind-boggling yet dishearteningly unsurprising.

Those who hate RR and think he is a terrible awful man who has "repeatedly thrown all of his players under the bus" will not change their minds no matter what any students, alumni, or coaches say. People only see the information that corellates to the opinion they already have.

this team will come out and shock the nation by there performance. I think the defense will look a lot better. I think this team will come out and smack who ever there playing in the mouth and end all this coaching speculation.

I know there has been a over-used quote about being around Tebow and being a better person but I honestly wish I could spend some time just being around RR and this team because I am certain I would emerge a better person for having done it!

I've wanted RR gone since day 1 cause IMO he's not got what it takes to be the HC of Michigan. Nor of OSU, ALabama, Texas, etc. Nothing personal.

But, he has taken far too much shit, nearly every bit of it undeserved. Lot of assholes out there.

they being M fans that have lost sight of whatv truly makes the program great and superior to all others. It is this, the players, coaches and their character. It is not wins. I would rather lose with these players and this coach than win with OSU or MSU's

Maybe this is the Two Hearted Ale talking, but this article makes me sigh. The reason is because I feel like we're about to dismiss a great coach and, more importantly, an honorable man for intellectually unsound reasons.

It would be different if we were talking about an unproven shot in the dark, but that is not at all the case. It's intellectually dishonest to discount what Rodriguez did at WVU and assume that his program doesn't translate to the Big Ten.

Yes, there are clear issues with the defense. People who criticize Rodriguez's coaching aren't unreasonable because, yes, he has probably made some mistakes. No coach is perfect. Ask Gators, Longhorns, and Tigers (LSU) what they think about their championship-winning coaches.

I'm a proud alum of our great university and I will always support our football program. Yet my greatest fear is that an honorable man and a great football coach is about to be driven out of town because he never got a fair chance because a nebulous faction of former players, boosters, and crybaby alums with money unilaterally and prematurely decided that Rodriguez was somehow not fit to coach at Michigan.

The great part about the mgoblog community is its (by and large) adherence to reason as a guiding principle. Brian Cook's official position is that he thinks Rodriguez should get another year, but he won't be upset if he gets dismissed. I don't think it's approprate to adopt a decidely amoral position when speaking from such a self-proclaimed moral high ground.

If reason tilts us toward retention, even slightly so, then at some point doing the right thing should play a factor. The RIGHT THING TO DO would be to give a talented and morally upstanding coach a legitimate chance to created and operate a program worthy of Michigan.
