Caris was committed to Ohio U. two years ago when they upset us in the tourney, causing Illinois to hire John Groce.  With their coach gone, Caris decommitted and then decided on Michigan.

Even when he loses, John Beilein wins in the end.

Haven't checked the numbers but I assume he means his PPG avg is highest over the last 9 games. Sounds about right to me. IMO, he has emerged as our best all around player. O and D.

also, anyone else worried about IU at home? Let just say I really hope MSU loses one more game.

This article makes me wonder if LeVert ran off the court because he was having a Nowitzki moment (I'm thinking of Nowitzki running off the court when the Mavs won the NBA Finals).  With all he's gone through, making that shot with his mom watching, that's powerful stuff.

This was a very nice article and a moving read about Caris Levert.

I found it interesting that Levert credits his on-court success to the confidence he says he gained in dealing with his father's death - but the article does a good job of showing how precisely he has rolled family tragedy into that success. For all he has been through, he carries himself amazingly well, it seems, and it's awesome to be able to witness as we do here in Ann Arbor the sort of player and person that Levert has become.

It's great that he came here because of that loss. As much as it hurt, I'll take it. We got a great young man who I think will be a valuable symbol of Michigan for years. Very impressed with how he handled his father's death.

Again, it shows the value of Beilein's approach of looking at the recruit and family and going after only those who have the right charachter. I hope as we have continued success and are able to get more highly rated players, we don't forget about the Caris LeVert's that built this team. I doubt that will happen as long as Beilein is here.

Crazy to think Beilein nabbed both Burke and LeVert from Columbus and Matta didn't offer either on of them.    Makes watching OSU flounder even sweeter.    Run, Caris, run.

Holy crap. Just when you think you couldn't be bigger fans of these young men. Then BOOM. You're crying on a friday morning.

I really think Caris is our best player. He is the only guy who can create his own offense regardless of who is guarding him or what level of competition we're facing. Nik is obviously right there as well, but defense swings it in favor of LeVert. He is raw, he can be careless, but there are no limitations on his potential. He has height, length, speed, quickness, surprisingly accurate jump shooting, aggressiveness, clever footwork, and off-season dedication.

I actually had Caris in class many years ago during my student teaching. I remember him being a pretty quiet and respectful kid. But he had a quiet confidence. I remember talking with my cooperating teacher about Caris, who at the time was probably 5'5. I had seen that his interests involved basketball. My cooperating teacher said "Caris? Man, that kid can BALL!" I had never suspected that this quiet, unassuming kid had that kind of side to him.

I think my favorite picture of the year thus far is the win at Nebraska, where the five on the floor are celebrating merely seconds after the buzzer sounded. The backboard signal glowing red. Walton is mid-air, letting out a howl. Stauskas and Irvin are both letting out their excitement. Robinson is flexing, teeth clenched. But then there's Caris, far left...calm as can be, mouth closed, just running to celebrate with his teammates.

Great read, great (but tough) story, and even better kid.

Damn. It sure got dusty in here while I was reading that. That kid has a lot of courage, and it's great to see him succeed. Michigan certainly wouldn't be in the position they are in without him.

Big player of the year candidate in my opinion. After watching around the league the last few weeks if sayer player of the year has to be CL or NS. That is if we finish strong and win out right.

After reading this article, I'll be rooting for Caris even more. I'm glad he's a part of this team. And momentum shift doesn't seem to accurately describe the feeling in Crisler when Caris made that half-time 3-pointer.

Also, I'm going to start taking this "rivalry" with Illinois a bit more seriously.

What an incredible article to find on MLive. For all the dissing given various publications by mgoblogeratti, that is a well written, evocative article. Definitely brings a tear to my eye.

It speaks to Caris' tremendous character, and certainly to his formation. One of the biggest links between the football and basketball teams (more, between Hoke and Beilein,) is the high character students they have recruited. I have been so very impressed by a few who have been profiled, and suspect that more of the guys are cut from the same cloth. Thanks very much for posting this.

OK, I certainly like Caris even more now. That was really moving. As a father (who coaches and plays bball with his teenage son), it's hard to read that and not personalize it. I hurt for Caris, and he seems like he's such a good kid. I hurt more for the father (interjecting myself there) not being able share the greatest joy which is seeing your child do well.

I remember reading an elven warriors commenter who knew LeVert since they were both from Pickerington Ohio and said that LeVert hasn't so much as uttered a single swear word since his dad died.

I have always been impressed with Caris' quiet confidence and calm demeanor as a basketball player.  I am now impressed beyond words with his character as a person.  What a wonderful young man.

Great article by Brendan Quinn.  I will be making it a point to seek out other pieces written by him.

Being a father of two young boys..I couldn't imagine what it would be like to not see my children grow up and enjoy their success in life. We are certainly all proud of the young man Caris is becoming and it's unfortunate his old man isn't here to experience it as well. Caris has a bright future..in basketball and especially in life in general.

In today's media, these articles are few are far in between, which again -- is unfortunate.

Great touching story.  I am amazed at how this kid has developed as a player as well - I still remember the debate about his redshirting some 16 months ago.  He has come so far and to hear the backstory is so nice.
