If anything, it gets stronger. I grew up in a Michigan family just outside Ann Arbor, and so it wasn't until I went to grad school at Notre Dame that I realized what an awesome, unique, special legacy I had been blessed with as a Michigan man. Now I'm in DC, and Michigan is one of the binding factors for me & several of my good friends down here.
You're also absolutely right that wins when you're no longer a student are no less sweet, although in sympathy with the OP (my last hockey game as a senior was getting upset by Notre Dame in the Frozen Four), the experiences you have while you're a student have a unique quality. It will bug me forever that we lost that year.
