Graduating Senior Anger

Submitted by goblue20111 on

Any other graduating seniorsup  in here? Anyone else feel like a good chunk of their college career was ripped off? Not that AA wasn't great, I'm gonna miss it all, but I just wish we had been well....US at sports (at least one) while I was here.

Freshman year, first game: the horror

Senior year, last game: OT loss for the NC

Anyone else pissed as I am? I always found it hilarious to listen to some of the older people bitch on this board about the current sports situation (mostly football) when they had some of the best years of Michigan sports.  My siblings went here from 96-00.  I fucking hate them because they couldn't give two shits about sports.  Charles Woodson,  football NC, and hockey NC?  Ughhh I just wanted one sports moment to hang my hat on in 4 years.  All those thousands and that huge endownment and we couldn't afford Cam Newton??? C'mon man.  Most of this is probably uncalled for but I'm seriously just frustanglingly pissed off right. I know I have individual moments to cherish (Wisconsin sophomore year, sending Lloyd off against FL, first half last two years but goddamn...

GO BLUE till the end but still real pissed right now.

Someone could easily come back and say "Who gives a shit about hockey." I get it all the time from fans of other schools whose hockey programs suck.  You aren't going to help our efforts to raise the profile of Michigan hockey in the eyes of mainstream fans if you're hating on some of the most successful teams in Michigan sports history.

And it's no problem. I want all Michigan sports to do well, and try to follow them all to some extent. I'm a football slappy, but a day in nice weather at a softball game is a fine way to spend an afternoon. Everyone should do it once. And Softball is different enough from baseball that it doesn't suffer in comparison like some women sports do. And besides, they're really good.

<br>I admit I kinda hopped on the bandwagon their title year, and went to most of their home games that season, but try and catch a couple every year. Some of the ushers are kinda crotchety, and I miss the "picnic seating" in the outfield, but it's a pretty yet cozy stadium.

The last couple of years haven't been the best, but you're a wolverine for life--there will be good times and bad.  Hey, at least you didn't go to State, then your life would just suck.

On a totally unrelated note, while I was watching the game last night, my wife was on her laptop searching for coupons for Ragu.  We're not even poor.  What the hell is that?

If it is really bothering you then apply for grad school or flunk a couple of classes so you can hang around for a bit longer. Your one of the lucky ones who is getting one of the best educations money can buy.  If you’re that pissed off about it, I'm sure there are a lot of people that would trade diplomas with you.

My 4 years saw in football: the loss to Ohio State when we were #1 and #2 respectively, the game that won't be mentioned against a certain D1A team, and the first 3-9 team in decades.  My hockey teams lost to UND in the frozen four after leading 5-1... you will find that just because you are not in Ann Arbor physically, your fandom be just as strong.  We will win again some day, and the fact that you are not a student will not make those championships any less sweet.

"you will find that just because you are not in Ann Arbor physically, your fandom be just as strong.  We will win again some day, and the fact that you are not a student will not make those championships any less sweet."

If anything, it gets stronger.  I grew up in a Michigan family just outside Ann Arbor, and so it wasn't until I went to grad school at Notre Dame that I realized what an awesome, unique, special legacy I had been blessed with as a Michigan man.  Now I'm in DC, and Michigan is one of the binding factors for me & several of my good friends down here.

You're also absolutely right that wins when you're no longer a student are no less sweet, although in sympathy with the OP (my last hockey game as a senior was getting upset by Notre Dame in the Frozen Four), the experiences you have while you're a student have a unique quality.  It will bug me forever that we lost that year.

I was about to say the same thing.  It definitely gets stronger.  I grew up in Ann Arbor and went to Michigan, and don't think I fully appreciated how great it was until I came to Texas for grad school.  I'm looking to move back to the midwest after school for a lot of reasons, one of which is to be closer to all my Michigan people.

I'll take this double post as an opportunity to comment on the actual topic at hand:

As a graduating senior, I do feel mildly robbed of seeing Michigan's MAIN sports triumphant in their old glory (as a Mets fan, I am perhaps more accustomed to this pain than many...except Lions fans).  HOWEVER, I do think the suffering I endured has made me more of a fan than any NC run could, and I look forward to watching Michigan win every B10 as soon as I leave Ann Arbor.

The Men's Gymnastics team won the NCAA national championship in 2010. I know it's not a major sport, and might not be one you care about personally, but let's give credit where it's due.

sucks. I got to live the '89 BB championship, Fab 5 season 1, Desmond, Rose Bowls. That was really an awesome time. But you might say my generation took winning for granted and the past 10 years, and the "success" and taunting from our rivals has brought a lot of the passion back, as much as that sucked. The future looks pretty damn good. And most importantly, your degree is gold from coast to coast.

Your Michigan allegiance should last a lifetime, so hopefully you'll live a long life and enjoy rooting for your alma mater have more than its share of glory. Your years on campus can be a great time whether your teams won won titles or not. Tough defeats ('11 hockey, '06 football) and lean years (I won't go there) will make eventual triumphs all the sweeter.

Just be patient. It will be rewarded.

First, the class that entered in fall of 1965 and graduated in spring of 1969 didn't get to celebrate a single NC either.

But that doesn't compare with what the classes entering the fall of 1970 to the classes finishing in the spring of 1988 experienced. The men's gymnastics and trampoline team won a NC in the spring of 1970. The next NC any Michigan team won, men's or women's, was the basketball NC in the spring of 1989. That's twenty years, pal, a stretch that included my years at UM. No sympathy from me. Deal with it like any other alum—take the good with the bad, and take pride in obtaining a degree.

The years in college--expecially at Michigan (which I never knew), should never be judged or looked back upon favorably because of athletics. The expereince and accomplishment of graduating from a school like UM is a lifetime lit fire under one's ass.

I know the OP is venting, and I am sure he will walk across that stage to grab his diploma and have a boner the size of Texas when he gets it. But I agree, Don--get over it because you are TRULY a Wolverine for life and when they do win--you will have no less a sense of (whatever--pride?) than if it were during your days in the dorms there.

I was on campus during the formative years of Lloydball, and I will say, I had pulled most of my hair out by the time each bowl game came around even during the glorious 1997-98 run (I think that time I pulled it out mainly because we got hosed and had only a portion of the title). Fortunately, baldness does not run in the family and the hair has since grown back.

I am graduating with my masters and all I have to hang my hat on is a fucking men's gymnastics championship. Really????? I am tired of being patient. I want to win fuc king NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am lucky I didn't go to St. Paul I would have punched out the first UMD fan who told me to quit bitching about the biased hockey east refs that always fuck us in the ass (does everyone remember the last time Scott Hansen fucked us in OT in Buffalo by disallowing Ryznar's goal.)

I am tired of the football team sucking against the white trash school to the west on I-96 and the redneck school down south in Ohio.

Whatever I have a great degree from the greatest University in the land. I will always get a laugh when both undergraduate and graduate rankings are released for sparty and tO$U.

What you have to hang your hat on is that you have a degree From one of the top universities in the country. Michigan is bigger than championships. What are you going to do? Go to a party and proclaim, "Michigan won two national titles when I was there.". That will get you far. You're pathetic and a fucking joke! Get off this blog...

But you know how people say things like "I'm not a racist, but I don't care for that color of person" or "I'm not saying I'd ever cheat on you honey, but I would nail that chick if ever given the chance"?  Yeah, your post kinda reads like that.

Also, you need MOAR EXCLAMATION POINTS AND QUESTION MARKS!!!!!!1!!!???!!!1!

why? I grew up a Michigan fan. My parents have pictures of me when I was six months old in a michigan clothes. I have been going to games since I was three. You will hardly find a bigger fan of Michigan. My dream came true when I was accepted to michigan for graduate school. God forbid I attended a better undergraduate program at Purdue than at Michigan (physics). But I guess you are the judge of fandom.

No one cares about your fandom judging.

When have I ever rooted for purdue? I didn't even root for purdue as a purdue student. thanks for assuming things about me, purdue blows at sports.

You don't know me in real life, so get lost and quit assuming things about me.

Things I care about as a student at Michigan and purdue:

1. Academics: My classes and research

2. Family

3. Friends

and way down the list sports.

but thanks for making assumptions. When you make assumptions, you make an ass out of u and me.

I consider people who judge others as embassements, aka you.

You mean like shitting on Michigan Gymnastics earlier in the thread and assuming no one cared about them? You are a hypocrite, and that isn't an assumption.

I also find it interesting sports is so far down the list considering you have done nothing but whine about a game that ended yesterday. You would think if sports were so far down your list of things you care about then you wouldn't be so upset.

my family are cubs fans since I grew up equisdistant between detroit and chicago. I adopted the tigers as my american league team.

I hate how I have to prove my fandom on here. screw you guys who are judging me.
