Gotta love Scout Recruiting website

Last night Brain Dohn wrote, "National Signing Day produced winners, disappoints and surprises."

Michigan State was on the list for disappointment and guess who is it???

Michigan State

LaVert Hill

The Spartans make the list because of expectations, and the inability to land anyone on the day. It may be coach Mark Dantonio's best class with the Spartans, but coming off a playoff appearance, they were a non-factor on the day. Cornerback LaVert Hill, defensive end Karamo Dioubate and defensive end Prince Sammons were all on the table and none would up choosing Michigan State.

Love it! That they are throwing salt on a wound.

I also concur. It should have been: "A Thread about How MSU and D'Antoni Failed to do anything of Note on National Signing Day, even though they went to the CFB Playoff and got Goat-Raped by eventual NC Alabama on National Television".

Right, I think that's what he was saying. If MSU had been shut out of the playoff, they could still bitch about Disrespekt and claim that they could play with anyone if they were just given a chance. By being given that chance, and completely shitting all over it, MSU proved that even in their best season ever they're a significant cut below the actual contenders, and recruits notice that kind of thing.

I didn't actually check to see if this was true, but I saw a great meme the other day. It was a picture of a sad Sparty and it said, "80 teams played in bowl games this year. Only one failed to score any points." I LOLed. Again, I have no interest in checking to see if anyone else got shut-out in their bowl game, but I hope not... :-D

I don't know if it hurt them as much as it just confirmed what people were all noticing, which was that they simply didn't have that good of a team.  I mean, yes they beat Oregon, OSU, UM, and Iowa, but when you dig into those games you saw so many one-off or random elements that it was hard to point at one thing they did exceptionally well except, I guess, defensive line play.  And for lots of national recruits, they have to sense that there is something more in the future.  With MSU, you aren't going to have a bunch of draft picks on both lines and at QB every season, and so the ceiling is maybe upsetting OSU once in a while and beating the bad teams on your schedule.  And with UM clearly trending up, you are basically signing up to finish third in your division more times than not.  That's a hard sell.

Came to make a snarky comment about how chips on shoulders are not piles, they're little chunks taken out of the shoulder. Looked up etymology of the phrase to make sure I was right about that. I was wrong. There are two etymologies, one of which involves piles (well, bundles) of wood scraps. British shipyard workers used to get to carry wood scraps home as a perk of the job, to use for fuel at home. They carried the "chips" on their shoulders because that was the most efficient way to do it. Then one day the bosses realized it was costing too much, so they ordered the workers to carry the chips under their arms. Can't carry as much that way. So one day one of the workers was like F that and defiantly put his chips back on his shoulder, and all the other workers cheered. Ergo: chip on your shoulder = defiance of perceived oppressor. Source: Wikipedia.

Also, I now realize that my imagined etymology only makes sense if you're talking about a statue, which can be permanently mutilated without, well, bleeding to death.

Learned something today. Thanks MGoBoard.

I'm glad that Rashad was specifically mentioned by Scout as an important part of Pitt's class.

Unlike a certain other lineman, Rashad handled his decommitment with dignity and class. No hard feelings and no accusations of dishonesty. He was told we might not have room and he decided that he would prefer to join a class where he would be guaranteed a scholarship.

I'm looking forward to Weaver having a solid college career, and I'm especially glad that he didn't choose PSU because he could be a very good player.

I still wish it had been handled better -- I liked Harbaugh's* suggestion yesterday at the press conference that students be allowed to sign LOIs at any time.  That would cut down on early offers and 15-month (apparently) meaningless "verbal commitments."

Having said that, the consensus seems to be that there was a player who was willing to grayshirt if necessary, who was told that in advance and waited it out.  So, there may have been a spot for Weaver after all, had he waited.  The fact of the matter is that if Harbaugh had not been open with him, and had said something like "Sure, we have a scholarship for you; just don't fax your LOI until 6 PM on NSD," he might have ended up going to Michigan and we'd never have known about the drama.

I was a critic of Harbaugh's tactics, so I'll give credit where it's due -- honesty did not benefit Michigan here.  It did, however, make sure that this young man was able to secure a scholarship to a good academic school in a Power 5 conference.  So, kudos to Jim Harbaugh for being open with a recruit, even when the message isn't what said recruit wanted to hear.  Now, just do a better job communicating (earlier) in the future. :-)

* This is not to suggest he's the first to mention it -- I've seen it from several other places also.  But that was the most recent source.

To be fair, the other thread was more along the lines of actual reporting on an MSU commit, and some users then took it upon themselves to disparage Michigan State where perhaps it wasn't called for. This thread is more along the lines of pointing out something that is somewhat typical anyway - they do not win many of the notable recruiting battles in East Lansing. No problem, of course, as Dantonio was out there yesterday saying that the Spartan brand is  best seen on the field. We shall see, I suppose.

Overall, I tend to agree - there are sometimes threads which go out of their way to ridicule our rivals, and they usually turn out to be terrible in their execution. I don't know that this one is nearly as egregious as some of the others as it does actually report another person's assessment of MSU's class.

It's amazing how obsessed they are with us...OMG such losers....I know at some point in time we are going to actually win one of these rivalry games on the field! Yeah SIGNING DAY!!!! THE DAY OF RECKONING....It's clear nothing else matters! I mean did you see how Alabama killed the team that beat us and Ohio State on the road??? I mean how bad are they?? Let's keep writing Mike D'antoni because it's so awesome and so witty! YAYYYYYYYYYYY RECRUITING!!! YAYYYYYY

In seriousness, congrats on the class, very nice get! On paper looks solid...Can we get back to the results now?

On a non-Sparty note, they also had a pretty good (free) 20+ minute video with Same Webb and Alan Trieu (sp?) that details the Michigan signees. It has comments and brief highlights of every recruit. Worth taking a look for those interested though the steaming was pretty choppy for me.

I don't have the skills or inclination to attach a link but it was on the front page of the Scout Michigan site (the Michigan insider) last night.

Grew up in EL but was fortunate enough to get out and go to UM, so I have a lot of state friends on the twitter/facebook timeline and such. Can't tell you how many tweets/posts I saw yesterday saying that Gary is extremely overrated. i love it
