While Michigan and OSU compete on a level playing field in football, no serious academic would ever pick OSU over Michigan--unless he or she was offered lots more money by Ohio, and money was the primary motivator for the decision.  This is more like those classic Michigan v. Purdue recruiting battles.

You got me on endowment -- only Minnesota's is bigger than OSUs among that group; they're all pretty close but any three of them combined is less than Michigan's.

But in World University rankings, http://www.timeshighereducation.co.uk/world-university-rankings/2012-13/world-ranking, it's

UM 20

UW 31

ILL 33

Minn 47

OSU 53

There are, of course other rankings, but they tend to fall out the same.  The rankings aren't like star ratings.  They take into account not only the general excellence of the universities but also their breadth and depth of study.  i.e., the higher ranked tend to be the "bigger" ones, in terms of how many high-ranking departments they have.

In other words, it's great to be a Michigan Wolverine.

In the midwest that's possibly true although Wisconsin is probably rated a cut above them academically. Then they're in a chasing pack with Illinois, Minnesota etc., as above.

Nationally, other than Berkeley which you already mentioned, UCLA, UVa, UNC Chapel Hill and UT Austin would generally be considered to be stronger academically than OSU. Those institutions are typically considered to be U-M's peers among the state flagships.

And somewhere in Ohio, a bowtie maker is weeping softly into his hands.  As he sits, alone, the realization starts to set in that his son, young Harold Jr. will no longer be able to make a living by plying his fathers trade.  Harold Sr. also realizes that his retirement security has been whisked away, and he'll now be forced into a role of servitude as a Walmart greeter until the day he no longer walks the Earth.

It's a fucking Shakespearian tragedy...
