Google Chrome Issues

Submitted by joeyb on
Is anyone else having issues with Google Chrome while viewing this site? Pages will load for me, but if I click the mouse, it will give me errors on all MGoBlog pages. I am running the Dev Channel build and I am submitting a bug report, so I just want to know if anyone else is having these issues, particularly if you are running the stable or beta versions. Also, if you have had this issue, have you figured out a way to fix it so that I don't have to use IE?

I was having the same issue on lots of pages, not just MGoBlog (although it was the primary culprit since I visit it so much). I just switched to the beta channel build (woo Linux package manager) and it went away. There is a reason the dev channel is named unstable. EDIT: And if you don't want to switch to the beta channel, why not use Firefox instead of IE?

FWIW none of my extensions died when I switched to the beta, and I'm guessing Firefox would probably have versions of the Chrome extensions you use. Firefox still has more extensions than Chrome, and most of the Firefox version of extensions that perform the same function are better/more polished. IMHE Chrome extensions just recently got to the point where the performance upgrade of using Chrome was worth the extension downgrade.

I was on Firefox until about 6 months ago. I like testing the cutting edge, which is why I am in the Dev Channel rather than the Beta. This is the first issue that I have had since then though. It just so happened that it hit my most used page the hardest.

using build 4.1.249.1036 and have no issues on mgoblog I do have some image issues (jpg, gif, etc don't show) on random sites also imo use ffox instead of ie if you're having problems w/ chrome.

FWIW I have tried Crome and Firefox and was underwhelmed with both. The best cure that I have found for most internet performance issues is buy a fast computer with lots of ram and find a good high speed provider. I use Outlook and IE and have both open on my computer most of the day without any issues that slow my work down. I have zero incentive to switch to competitors that have "issues." BTW MGoBlog loads flawlessly every time in IE8.

Of course it does. You are running a "stable" version full of security holes that won't get patched for another 3 months. I am running a daily build of Google Chrome that supports parts of the internet that IE won't support until IE9 is released, probably about a year from now.

I can browse the web pretty well using my Android phone, so it's not really a power or bandwidth issue. Most of the time, the reason a site won't load is because it employs some non-standard element (or in the case of IE problems, a standard element IE never adopted) and the browser is unable to render it properly. Based on my experience, MGoBlog usually runs fine on Chrome, except sometimes the ads introduce some goofy formatting issues.

My only issue with Mgoblog on chrome has been with images on some of the board threads. They show up compressed along the y-axis. Like Charlie Weis sat on them or something. Anyone else see something similar?

Oh, and if there are any other vim fans here, I suggest getting vimium for Chrome. It isn't as complete as vimperator on firefox, but it's pretty darn good.

so I'm just going to ask this, because I feel like I can't be the only one thinking it. Why do people have such an issue with IE? There have been multiple posts similar to this in the past about Chrome and Firefox and whatever. I have literally never had a single problem with this site or with double posts or anything. I just use regular old internet explorer and I've neer had a problem. Do people just like trying new things or is there some serious flaw with internet explorer that needs to be avoided?

I don't like IE at all, but that's generally a preference. MGoBlog doesn't work well on the (admittedly) ancient IE 2003 I use at work. That said, because IE is ubiquitous, it is the one most attacked by hackers.

Everthing a non emu said below. Plus: 4) Slow development cycle. You don't get new features as quickly as open source projects. It also takes much longer for them to patch security holes because they batch them all into one security update instead of several smaller ones. IE also plays tag-along with features in the browsers because they take so long to put out new features and then introduce 1 or 2 new features that may or may not catch on in other browsers. 5) It doesn't support standards but everyone is forced to put specific exceptions in their code to handle IE in one case and every other browser in another case. 6) Cleanliness of the interface (for Chrome at least). It would be kind of hard to get more screen space in any browser other than Chrome. I just looked up some old browser tests for you. They compare performance of all of the major Browsers. All browsers except IE have had major releases since the first ones were done, so they don't even bother testing IE in it, but you can assume that they would be last in every category. http://lifehacker.com/5352195/browser-speed-tests-chrome-40-and-opera-1… http://lifehacker.com/5395555/browser-speed-tests-the-windows-7-results http://lifehacker.com/5457242/browser-speed-tests-firefox-36-chrome-4-o…

1) Speed (cannot emphasize this enough) 2) Extensions/plugins 3) Security EDIT: Oops. This was supposed to be a reply to kilgore trout above.

You are right that it is a resource hog and that it takes a lot longer than other browsers to do anything, but usually these two things are inversely proportional.
