Someone just as good is doubtful

Its highly doubtful we get a better or equal replacement.  Dawson was ESPN's top guard, and #7 to Rivals.  Most of the other top lineman are already locked up or looking elsewhere.  The only one I could us landing this late that would be an upgrade is Dorian Johnson, but that's a real long shot.

Sunday starts on the same trajectory as it has been for the last month+.  Just need the Lions to lose, the Tigers to lose, and my FFB team to fail miserably to keep pace with the norm as of late.... Sigh.

I immediately thought the same thing. It's unfortunate to lose a kid of his caliber especially since it seemed like he had strong relationships with a lot of other recruits.  Wish him the best of luck and move on to filling his spot with another great player like Pocic.  Pocic's older brother plays on Illinois so he most likely watched us dominate yesterday.  He was high on UM before the line filled up so quickly. He would be a great addition, but if we can't get him it looks like the trifecta of McQuay, Green, and Treadwell is back in play.

What's Hoke's stance on that?

We all know Hoke is against our committed recruits looking elsewhere, but what's his stance on recruiting kids that are committed elsewhere?  Trying to flip a kid would seem like a bit of a hypocritical stance.

I don't see the hypocracy?

I don't see the hypocrisy? Hoke's problem is with player's committed to UM visiting other schools, not with coaches trying to recruit committed players.

Agreed. First thing I wondered is if something happened in school/his personal life that made him no longer desirable as a recruit. Not saying it did, but "parted ways with" makes it sound strange.

Seriously.  How many other recent recruits from Cass Tech with Michigan offers haven't gone to Michigan?  I can't think of one other than Dior Mathis.  It's ridiculous to say that we've lost that pipeline.

EDIT: The OP's revised version is much better than the original one.

I thought it was pretty F'd up

when I read somewhere (likely mgoblog) that the head coach at Cass was attempting (or at least obliging/entertaining a request) to "spread the wealth" a little bit with respect to other college programs (namely MSU, if memory serves).  I have few (none) particulars, but I was afraid that may be an ominous tell... obviously don't know if it played a role here, but it may weaken the pipeline.

This indeed sucks, but no one is irreplaceable.  We await the next great oline recruit...

Yes, I know. I actually remember him.

And former RB Thomas Wilcher who played for Bo in the 80s stated that he hopes to send more recruits MSU's way; therefore, the "pipeline" may not be what it once was.  Talk of "breaking down the Big Blue Wall" at Cass Tech has increased the last couple of years.

Disagree

I just read that Freep article.  Coach obviously wants to send as many kids to college on scholarship as possible.  Cass Tech has a lot of prospects, including some Michigan won't have room for (esp. if Hoke continues pulling in classes ranked in the top 5).  Building a relationship with every school is on his agenda.  What's he supposed to say, that he's diappointed D. Finley isn't going to Michigan when he didn't get a scholarship offer?  That kids like Deon Drake, Kenton Gibbs, etc. should walk on at Michigan and take out student loans (if they can get accepted academically)?

Also read carefully because that second quote in the article is from Finley not Coach Wilcher:

"It's not like that," Finley said. "It's never been like that. Most of our best guys do end up at U-M, but I believe this can change things. I feel like me going to MSU might open up some doors. More guys might look at MSU, and MSU might recruit more of our guys."

Obviously kids within a year of each other might have interest in playing in college together, but generally I think these "pipelines" are more recruiting spin than anything else.  I mean, Farmington Hills Harrison was supposed to be an MSU pipeline, but that didn't stop Funchess and Ojemudia from coming to Michigan (thank goodness).

If he had said

"I hope to send more recruits Western Michigan's way" would you have had any reaction at all?

His job is not to be an illegal recruiter for Michigan, but to win football games and mold young men. And along the way if he can get as many of them as possible a free education by playing football, he's going to try and do that. That means sending as much of his team as can get offers to college programs. The really good ones to Michigan, Florida, etc. The next tier of guys who aren't getting offers from them to Iowa, Northwestern, and yes, MSU, as the other instate program.  And then guys to Western, Eastern, Toledo, etc.  And hopefully some guys to places like Grand Valley State. Almost all of whom, including that top tier, aren't going to be professional players, and are going to get a free education out of it.

That's what he's supposed to do, and I'd be disappointed in him if did like certain other coaches did, and steer players to or away from a place. He doesn't need to push every player he has to go to Michigan.  First, only a very few of them are going to be good enough for Michigan to be interested in.  Second, he doesn't need to overtly act on it; he lives it every day.

Bottom Line

I didn't say what he is supposed to do, what he should do, what would be right to do, or what he is obliged to do.  Nor did I address what kind of person he is, a judgment far removed from any of my business.  The strenght of the well-known "pipeline" or "Blue Wall" that exists at Cass Tech was questioned and I pointed out the Freep article.  I didn't write the thing.  As a Michigan fan, I was simply expressing that I would like to see the pipeline continue.  Perhaps "F'd" up was a bit strong; "bummer" seems more appropriate.

So, it is a bummer to hear that the pipeline running from Cass Tech to Michigan may not be so strong as it once was,  per quotes in the Freep, and indeed other places.  The author insinuated as much; I reacted to it.

It's a Free Press article

Written by a long time Lansing Journalist who's covered the Spartans forever. And even gotten in trouble for asking inflamatory questions to Michigan players. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

61 > 87

Conley is ESPN's #61 overall recruit.  Dawson is #87.  So at least in TomVH's ESPN world, Conley would definitely be a bigger loss than Dawson.  Losing either would really suck, and losing both would awful.

Thirded,

in fact I'm seeing it as a positive.  Don't misunderstand, I wish we still had Mr. Dawson coming to Michigan, and I wish him the best wherever.  The positive part is the coaches are keeping to their word...if you're not committed, then buh bye.  Keeping your word and sticking to your principles pays dividends in many many ways down the road.

Kudos to the coaches, and best of luck DD.

They could always reach out

They could always reach out to a couple of linemen, but you would think that those linemen have been building relationships with the schools they've committed too. Notre Dame has several commits with Michigan offers as well, so if they want another O-Lineman they can always reach out and there are 4 months to get in someone's ear...

While It Sucks

I'm past the stage of worrying about recruits. Michigan will always recruit well - losing a player here or there is not going to kill this program. Hoke and Co. are building a dynasty here.

Just think - guy's like Jake Ryan and Des Morgan were about as heralded as me coming out of High School.

Michigan will be strong.

Yes, but as you're seeing

Yes, but as you're seeing with MSU this year, if you want to sustain success year after year, you do need to have some elite recruits. I agree that it's not as important considering the other commitments we have, but it's very hard to build an elite, dynastic type program without elite recruiting. This one decommitment doesn't hurt as much as it might have in the past, but you can't rely on sleepers alone.

Exactly

Sleepers will get it done in the Big Ten.  But if you want to compete nationally, you need some elite guys.  Especially if you want to compete with the SEC where there's loads of talent in the trenches.  So in that respect, losing Dawson is pretty big.

PAC-12, Big 12 either one but mostly

A conference with a less annoying fanbase for a start. I also find it a little annoying that guys who probably would have signed with UM in past years get their heads turned by the possibility of playing S-E-C Footbaw!!!(Diamond and Dawson both being examples).

I get the SEC has good teams but between the S-E-C chants and the Yankees-Red Sox type coverage it gets, I'm over it.

UM needs to revisit this

UM needs to revisit this policy.  If a kid commits, then wavers and wants to take other visits, UM shouldn't "part ways."  They should just classify the kid as going from committed to uncommitted, and continue recruiting him.  I post not to pontificate, but rather to see if someone can enlighten me as to why this is an errant approach.

I disagree, it's pretty obvious that if Dawson would have visited Florida he would have committed to them as well. It's just the timing is different (and proper) now. The coaches just believe in the word commitment. If you're visiting somewhere else, you're not committed.

But that's not exactly how its working

I think its the "you're dead to us" approach to the decommitment aspect that bothers most people.  If it was more of a "you're no longer committed, and your spot is now open for others, but we'd still love to have you in the class" it would be one thing.  But that doesn't seem to be the way its working.  I mean, they went from he's committed to "I want to look around" to "LOL, bye foeva!!" all because he wanted to visit another school.

I mean, if the coaches wanted him in the first place, and there's not much in the way of upgrades or adequate replacements, why not just take the decommitment, tell him to check out some other schools, and then keep recruiting him?  Seriously, what's the harm in that?

I would be the harm is that

The harm would be that they have told other recruits that if they commit and want to visit somewhere else, they are not coming to Michigan. And seeing that they have enforced that policy with others (an assumption) they are not going to be hypocritical now and allow someone to do it because they are the #1 OG in the country. Character matters to them. They need to trust their players. They want a family attitude and you can't build a strong family when you are worrying about  someone not being fully committed to the family. I am having a hard time understanding why so many people think it is so wrong to expect a 17-18 year old to honor his committment.

Because

Michigan wants to solidify as much of the class as possible, as early as possible. If the "I'm committed, but not really" approach is allowed, you can end up stranded at the altar on signing day. If you are coming to Michigan, then commit. If you are unsure, we can't promise that your spot will be here.

But

It sends the message. Sucks he is gone and will miss him in this class, but they have their policy. They are honest with the recruits and stick to their philosophy.

Only commit if you are sure and of you commit then waver, they can't hold your spot anymore. They base their numbers on the recruit so if he leaves once why count on him again.

What does a verbal commit

What does a verbal commit  mean if you do this?  The policy is good as is...explain to the recruit what it means to verbal and hold him to it.... Mich precludes other offers when they take verbals.  The policy makes sense to me.  This just happens...if a recruit wants to reconsider on signing day and there is room  - that is another matter.

I tend to agree.  It's a tough policy, but Michigan saves a spot for you and doesnt recruit others.  After the 5 ol commits, we have turned down others who looked at us.  It's a tough policy because it is a tough decision to make so early on in the process.

I can understand this, but it works both ways.  If we didn't have this policy, perhaps Derrick Green or Quon would have committed already.  I know if I were a blue chip this policy would make me hold off as late as possible so I could enjoy taking visits elsewhere just for the ass kissing.  What 17 year old wouldn't want that from blue chip programs?

This policy gets to the core

This policy gets to the core of Hoke's recruiting.   If you want to be at Michigan badly enough and the staff sees something, he will accept your commitment.  This gets you the die hard players.  The guys that bleed maize and blue, the non waivers.  Bosch, LTT, Fox, and others believe in Michigan.  Only kids that have wavered are Conley and Dawson.  You get kids who are all in.

Not that Green and Treadwell are not all in.  They will make their choice and be great players for UM or not.  But, you get a great core believing in Michigan.

At first, I didnt like the policy.  I thought we would become more regional of a school.  It is expensive to fly out to Ann Arbor from different areas of the country.  I also thought that we would miss on top prospects who wanted to wait.  Now, I like it.  You give the school your word.  Hoke give you his word.

Why would you want a commitment

From a guy who isn't really committed and still wants to be woo'd and take visits?  Then you're holding a spot for a guy (and not recruiting someone else) who isn't just a possible flight risk, but a likely one.

We should be fine. I think Kalis and Bosch will have the guard spots locked up for the next four or five years. Dawson would've been in a dog fight with Braden, Fox, Magnuson, and LTT.

Well, Dawson is viewed as a guard, so wouldn't he have been in the dog fight with Kalis and Bosch? Either way, the program won't suffer any setbacks because of this.

Sucks but good response so far

It really sucks, and I like what I am seeing so far from fans, but I really hope people take this well. Meaning no tweets at him unless they are to wish him well. I have no problem with a kid taking time to make a decision. Hell I am doing that with what job I am going to take and I am years older than this kid.

So good luck to him, hope he ends up back at Michigan, but I hope that he does well whereever he goes.

I have no problem with a kid

I have no problem with a kid taking time to make a decision either. That's what Treadwell is doing. That's not what Dawson did. This is the equivalent of you accepting a job offer, them canceling future prospect interviews, and then you calling back and being like "oh nevermind, I want to look around some more". If you do that, that job is most definitely not going to be available to you anymore. Similarly, Michigan will move on. We will not see Dawson in this class.

I understand that choosing a school is a big deal, and I understand that there's a lot of pressure to commit early, but it's not okay to just change your mind and back out. The coaches go to great pains to stress to recruits that they shouldn't commit unless they are 100%. Honorable behavior stipulates that you wait until you're certain, so you don't eat up a spot that could be filled with someone that will actually stay committed.

We can't blame him for

We can't blame him for visiting.  Years ago I wanted to attend UF as well.  Then I visited Gainesville and realized I didn't want to spend four years in that town.

Best of luck to the young man either way.  His story is a tearjerker.

Me too.  One winter in Ann Arbor was super cold, and the girls on the Florida brochure looked so good.  But, I stayed and loved it.  My gf is from Florida, but she could care less about football.  I always liked Muchamp and Spurrier.  Hated Meyer though.

Considering he is from Michigan and plays for Cass, it is pretty surprising.  When you think about it, he did want to visit before and did actually schedule a visit until he cancelled it after talking with the coaches.

Undergrad

At the undergrad level I don't think there's much differentiation period. Different schools use the same textbooks and teach the same basic content. By the time you start work you forget all the specifics that you would get from the classes being harder. I think the main differentiation between institutions happens at the graduate level, because then things start getting more resource constrained and only certain schools have big professors doing research.

While I wouldn't have guessed that DD would be one

I don't follow thing closely enough to have known of his apparent affection for UF and their players instead of ours, but I've been saying all along that we were going to have at least one high-profile decommit before signing day. It's an inevitable by-product of so many kids committing so early. You hate to lose a local kid, but at least he won't be playing elsewhere in the conference.

Michigan isn't right for everybody, and not everybody is right for Michigan.

Bright side?

Losing Dawson blows.  I was really looking forward to him in maize and blue.  However, on the bright side we get to look forward to a Hello Post, after thinking most were already used up this year.

Yeah...not sure if that's bright side...more like dimly lit side.

We don't know that

The only time this happened was with Pharaoh Brown, and rumors at the time said that Hoke pulled his scholarship offer because of the way Brown took a covert visit without alerting the coaches.

I doubt he ends up at Michigan, but that also doesn't mean he doesn't still have an offer

Ah well

in a way this seems like a no-lose situation, really. Seems like there are other really good players we are in on for 2013, and other OL for 2014. So, while Dawson is good, I don't see this as devastating, and I'm sure he'll do well wherever he goes.

Psychologist here but Im thinking he may have done this in part due to the death of his Dad. Perhaps he feels he can distance himself a bit from it by moving away. Hard for any one but really tough at that age. Anyway, hope he does well where ever he ends up.

Good, bad, or indifferent, he

Good, bad, or indifferent, he knew the rules before he committed, so long!

We won't miss him

Our o-line will be perfectly fine. He's not a make-or-break commit. Good luck to him in his future career as a Florida Gator.

You are talking about a

You are talking about a number of current players including a couple of current starters.  There is no reason to be rude towards kids on our team.  Thomas Gordon is a very solid starter at S and BWC is serviceable at DT.  We haven't seen yet about kids like Hollowell, Richardson etc.

Coaches expect some guys to change their mind

I'm sure the coaches aren't shocked, as people change their minds all the time. It really is better for Dawson to move on if he gelled better with they guys at Florida.

The coaches have also been pretty clear:  unless you are positive you want to attend Michigan, don't commit. They have encouraged recruits to visit schools, and to see what is out there.

On the bright side, we definitely have room for Treadwell, Green, and McQuay. This also opens room for a late bloomer or two, whether on the OL or elsewhere.

Regarding the OL, I have heard that the coaches are really high on Ben Braden, one of the current redshirt freshmen. I think people are forgetting that we had a good recruiting class of OL in 2012, along with the four remaining in 2013.

It would be great to add another solid OG, but if one doesn't materialize, I'd rather have an extra scholarship to give on signing day, or hold one for 2014.

Id really like to see that

Id really like to see that scholarship used on a big defensive lineman....  we seem solid going forward on the O line.... for whatever reason it feels like we could use another DL.
