Good Sports Bar in LA for Sparty Game

Submitted by CaliFan on

Going to be in LA (Los Angeles not Louisiana) for the Sparty game and wanted to see if anyone had thoughts on a good sports bar.  I saw some spot in Santa Moica mentioned a while back, but can't seem to find it.

On a side note, some douchenozzle Stanford fan today told me Rich Rod was all smoke and mirrors...man I would love to see a home and home with ol' Jimmy Harbaugh....

I don't know if Legends in Long Beach is still around, but if so, I'd go there.

Otherwise, if you could stomach it, apparently there's a group of Spartans who mourn their team at a place called Big Wangs in Santa Monica.

A room full of Spartans at a place called Big Wangs.  How appropriate.

Big Wangs is actually in Hollywood, not Santa Monica.  A lot of also Spartans gather at either the Hooters or Yankee Doodles in Santa Monica - I'm not sure which one these days.

If you're looking for  a Michigan bar in Hollywood - Hollywood Billiards used be the Alumni bar.  A crowd of 15-20 Wolverines usually gather there for BTN games against MAC-type opponents.  Not sure for about turnout for a bigger game.

I lived in Santa Monica this past summer; these are the places that I liked to catch a game (albeit they aren't "Michigan bars"):

Barney's Brewery (touristy, but good food, good specials, and tons of people and TVs)

Finn McCool's (Irish pub)

South (someone already mentioned this)

The Parlor

and of course there is always the ESPNZone in downtown LA...but that's nothing special.

South is one of 2 "official," i.e. Michigan Alumni Association, gamewatch bars in LA, and definitely a good place to watch a Michigan game.  Plus they give back 10% of each bill to the LA UM Alumni Assoc. Scholarship Fund, so you can feel a little better about eating and drinking for 4 hours...

How is the U-M crowd at Sangria? Is it a good setup?  I don't remember them having a lot of TVs when I've gone out there before at night.  Do they set them up in the dance floor area or are they just around the bar?  I'm considering heading up there for the MSU game.  I live in Newport Beach and have no interest in going inland to Tustin for the official Alumni Club event.  The bar I normally go to in Newport, Rudy's, is technically a Michigan State bar, so that could be a good week to check out Hermosa.

If you're near Santa Monica at all, I'd also suggest South.  It's a great game atmosphere, and it's packed with M fans and M fans only.

Last year, a Michigan fan came with a friend who was an OSU fan, wearing an OSU t-shirt, and the entire bar starting chanting "Asshole, Asshole" at her.  Yes, her.  It was hilarious and awesome.
