Good Pub for "M" in Dublin...

Submitted by Wolvie3758 on

So I am in Dublin Ireland for the last 4 weeks here working and geting ready to head back to the US on Wed. Today I opened up the  Irish Times and there was a Full page story of "THE BIG HOUSE" with a quarter page picture of the Soccer Game.. It was a great article although it did refer to the  Wolverines of Michigan  Univ.. I will forgive them that..

This game received alot of publicity here in Europe especially UK and Ireland and alot of positivie feedback regarding UM and the stadium!.

After being away for nearly a month it was great to get a taste of Michigan. I have run into a few fellow Wolverines while here and a Spartan or two. Penn State football team is coming here to Dubln in a few weeks to Play UCF and recently Navy and ND played here so this city is quite familiar with US College football.

Dublin is a great city and Ireland is awesome. I highly recommend it for Americans. Very friendly very safe lots to do and see and they like Americans.

I saw the thread title early this morning and disregarded it. But I had to take a look when I saw it again just now, as I was wondering how in the world the mods had dared to leave a "best bar to watch..." thread up for so long.  Turns out a combination of a better title and me not being so judgemental of threads soley because of their titles would have gotten me to read the OP a lot sooner, and without any negative preconceived notion of it's content...

That will get you kicked out of a Pub.  As my American Colleagues and I learned when we did that (in the context of a discussion about retirement options and our 401k accounts) when in Dublin in 2010 for a 8-week work visit.

Took us a few minutes afterwards until we were like "oh ........ yeah."

Originally though Pub stood for publicity. Then I saw the city of Dublin in your title and thought, "Oh. A pub.". Happy to read about the good publicity, rather than a drinking establishment I'll unfortunately, probably never make it to. I would like to get to Ireland. Someday. Someday.

I know there are some people here that don't like these "big events" at the Big House, but there really is a benefit to the university and athletic department, aside from the cash. Keep in mind that there may be some nice kicker over in Europe now, who wants to be a Michigan Wolverine. Maybe there's some fast, tall kid who doesn't have the footwork to play soccer, but would like to learn more about football, the TE position, and the U-M. Maybe there's a hockey player or basketball player that puts us on their list or bumps us up a bit, just because they recognize the support of our fans or feel they might get to be part of something special. It happens all the time, with goodwill around the globe.

Not saying it's a huge effect, but when it's successful like the hockey game against State, the NHL game, this soccer game and of course our UTLs, it might make the difference in lots of little ways.

And as far as the U-M itself, how many of us became interested long before applying to colleges, because we saw the football team or basketball team on TV? Maybe gets us a few extra, smart researchers from overseas, who didn't even know Michigan or didn't have us in their consciousness. I bet there are a few more smart people considering U-M now.

Good Pub!

I bet Buffalo Wild Wings is there with all of the good publicity we have got in Ireland lately.

Circled the Ring of Beara (the Ring of Kerry is for beginners!) the last time in Ireland, in 2007. Stopped at such lovely places that included Doolin, Castletownbere, Kenmare, Kinsale & Cobh. Traversed the Healy Pass, which was just...awesome.

More to the point of the OP, I want to go back, because we skipped Dublin last time around. You could spend an entire 2-week Ireland trip in that city and be very happy, too.

...But don't ever ask for a black and tan. "half and half" will keep you from starting a bar fight. The quays at temple bar was a hell of a party, but if you're looking for some super friendly drunk Irishmen and some good authentic trad music, Galway is a great town too. Damn do I want to go back now...
