Good News on a Bad Day

Submitted by ypsituckyboy on

Well, despite the Woolfolk predicament, today did have some good news. Said good news was made possible because MGoBlog is awesome and the Angry Michigan Hating Gods were busy creating other catastrophies.

A little while back, someone had the courtesy to post a thread about a job opening at his place of gainful employment. I saw it, knew that a friend of mine (and non-MGB reader) would be a great candidate for the position, and had him send his resume to the poster. A little skepitcal since this is an anonymous message board, but, I figured, what the heck.

Well, a few days later, he got an interview. Shortly thereafter, he received an offer for the position! How awesome is that!

MGoBlog - now with jobs.

Yeah, crazy huh? At some point someone should be able to just say, "Look, I'm willing to take $X rather than the number normally associated with my degree." That would be a win-win, no? I know someone who hasn't taken the tests to become a certified electrician because if they did their employer would be required to pay them more, which they can't do, so they'd need to be let go.

We live in a ridiculous world.

I'm searching for a new job while maintaining my present one.  I've got at least 40 resumes out and have had a few "sniffs" but the market is VERY tight.

In my case I'm competing against a lot of middle management that's been whacked the past few years and is willing to work at near entry wages just to make the mortgage/feed family. This is displacing a lot of the market for recent graduates.

I'm not willing to take a paycut that drastic, so I sit where I am and hope things get better.  Congrats to OP's friend.  Hope he/she likes the job.

Another plus, I was not diagnosed with cancer today.  Although that may only be due to the fact that I didn't go into the doctor...

It's sad how much wind this took out of my sails.  My excitement level during the build-up to the season was peaking, now it's gone.  Nobody who supports the Maize and Blue should submiss before the season, but unfortunately, that's the position I feel I have taken...

Congrats on the job, my company was purchased off a Chapter 11 bankruptcy auction today.  The company who bought us is akin to a shadowy unknown figure.  It may be a great thing, but it may also mean that they have 'their' people.  It may be my official show up to work drunk day tomorrow...

That's pretty awesome.   I always tell people an advantage of having gone to U of M is the networking opportunities (through alumni networks, viewing parties etc.)  Now I can add MGoBlog to that list.

PS I'm sure Brian  would accept commission/head hunter fees.

Depends what you're looking for.  for staffing services perhaps try Kelly Services? (might be a temp thing) For more exec level availability... heidrick & struggles.

These companies aren't state specific; but, are country wide/global.  Sorry, that's all I got.

There isn't much they can do, because there are so many people looking for jobs at the moment.

Someone from U-M told me they're averaging over 300 applications per position.

On a related note, back in March I posted a thread asking for advice for my interview for a purchasing position. I really studied some of the responses and I had a great interview and got the job!

This site is truly the best. You can always find someone who can relate to you or answer a question or need that you have.
