Good luck to Wayne State!
I almost transferred to Wayne State in the late '80's from a public college in Northern California.
This would be really nice for the school and the city. Best of luck to the TARTARS. (I refuse to call them the Warriors, I'm sorry.)
EDIT: For the benefit of the non-Michiganders/non-Detroiters on this board, Wayne State is a school in Midtown Detroit. Their football team is playing for the D-II football national championship today against Pittsburgh State University (Pittsburgh, KS).

Can you elaborate? Do they have a game or something?
December 17th, 2011 at 9:25 AM ^
No, seriously, go on. I have no idea what you're talking about and would like you to elaborate because I don't feel like googling what's so special about Wayne State today.
P.S. - This probably should be OT, unless your elaboration explains why it's not.
December 17th, 2011 at 9:32 AM ^
Perhaps try paying attention to football or not commenting.
December 17th, 2011 at 9:39 AM ^
Perhaps instead of trying to come up with a sny remark, you could've just told me what was going on like the multiple people below who actually posted helpful comments.
December 17th, 2011 at 11:08 AM ^
Your question was way too toolish and board policey. i would assume you would just google it if you had a legitimate question.
December 17th, 2011 at 12:20 PM ^
Just as easily you could have posted a link, any form of description of the event, etc. Decrying someone as lazy and "policey" when you don't provide any context is just as bad.
December 17th, 2011 at 9:26 AM ^
For those of us not patched into what Wayne State is up to these days you might want to actually say what you are wishing them luck in.

Joe Long is a tackle...Jake's brother.
Nick Moeller is a QB...Andy's son.
Go WSU!
December 17th, 2011 at 11:07 AM ^
Interesting stuff. I was wondering if Pittsburg State QB Zac Dickey was the son of former Michigan QB BJ Dickey, but unfortunately not. Go Tartars

Wayne State is playing in it today. They are taking on the Pitt State Gorillas of Pittsburg, Kansas.
Pitt State has a pretty good QB and Wayne State has two RBs with over 1,300 rushing yards each.
The game begins at 11am and is available for viewing on ESPN2 and ESPN3.

Wayne State plays in the D-II National Championship game today.
No. 6 Wayne State (12-3) vs. No. 2 Pittsburg State (12-1) (ESPN2, 11 a.m. ET)
December 17th, 2011 at 9:38 AM ^
11:00 AM on ESPN2, if I am not mistaken. Live from Florence, Alabama, no less.
Having been born and raised in Metro Detroit, I know tons of people who went to Wayne State and there is quite the buzz, at least locally.
I'll be honest - I did not know they were competing for the D-II championship until the local news started giving an almost eerie amount of attention to Wayne State football, a hitherto unknown force in SE Michigan.
December 17th, 2011 at 10:36 AM ^
Whose idea was it to have a national championship game that early? Even if it is the D-II championship that seems kind of stupid.
December 17th, 2011 at 11:18 AM ^
I have no idea why it is this year, but this game used to be the first of a triple header with the D3 championship game and the Heisman. As someone who has made the trip many times, I loved the early game.... tailgate starting at Waffle House, a nap afterwards, and celebrate a GVSU victory all night long.
December 17th, 2011 at 2:16 PM ^
If my day started at the Waffle House it would be shortly ending on the toilet. Very bold choice sir.

They changed the nickname because no one knew what a tartar was. They thought it was the sauce you put on fish.
December 17th, 2011 at 9:45 AM ^
Yup, from a NYTimes article, August, 2000:
At Wayne State University in Detroit, ''There were some liabilities with Tartars,'' Mr. Marciani said. ''Not a lot of people knew what that was.'' The new name, Warriors, respects its heritage - Tartars were Mongolian invaders.

No one seems to know what a Hokie is, either, but you won't see VA Tech changing their name anytime soon.
December 17th, 2011 at 11:02 AM ^
Yeah but they have a really stupid chant that goes with it that everybody there apparently loves.
December 17th, 2011 at 11:05 AM ^
And a dance.
December 17th, 2011 at 7:34 PM ^
A Hokie is just a cheap knock off of the original Hoke.
December 17th, 2011 at 9:48 AM ^
I am following on Facebook the exploits of 13 drunken Wayne State football alumni who ard traveling by van from Detroit to the game.

I love seeing Wayne States and Eastern Michigan do well! Good for them.

Wayne State University! Land of opportunity!
December 17th, 2011 at 10:21 AM ^
I look forward to this game. GVSU has played here several times as well. Will definitely be on WSU side.
December 17th, 2011 at 10:22 AM ^
Willbe pretty cool to see WSU on TV. I'm pulling for the Tartars in this one.
December 17th, 2011 at 10:46 AM ^
A world of opportunity. Wayne State University. Wayne State University.
December 17th, 2011 at 10:56 AM ^
I feel kind of embarrassed for people that didn't know what Wayne State had going on today...

...is going to have some job opportunities on a larger stage someday.
December 17th, 2011 at 12:07 PM ^
I had that same thought watching the game last week. their game plan, particularly on offense (and even more particularly with the running game), was outstanding.
December 17th, 2011 at 11:10 AM ^
Interception! I've never seen a better start.
December 17th, 2011 at 11:24 AM ^
Great way to start! I'm interested in seeing #8 for Wayne St. They say he has 9 picks on the year.
December 17th, 2011 at 11:11 AM ^
Pandemonium! Wayne State picks off the first pass from Pittsburg State
December 17th, 2011 at 11:16 AM ^
Wow...7-7 tie, and nonstop action. A KO return, a pick each by the two QBs...and we have 13:02 left in the first quarter.
December 17th, 2011 at 11:22 AM ^
There is so much bad football being played to begin this game right now. It is brutal. And holy cow is it just me or does Dan Hawkins sound/look like Frank Caliendo? Dan Hawkins and Pam Ward are almost impossible to listen to!
But at least it's still cool that Wayne State is on ESPN2.
December 17th, 2011 at 11:25 AM ^
...bad in a good way.
I am very entertained. I'd much rather watch this game than, say, Western Michigan v. Purdue.
December 17th, 2011 at 11:33 AM ^
So I was looking up some info on Wayne St and ran into an interesting story about current player James Jackson who is a transfer from Ohio St. Appears that the SEC isn't alone with over signing issues:
06/25/11 - James Jackson assumed that when he was offered a full football scholarship to Ohio State it meant that as long as he stayed out of trouble and kept up with his school work, the university would pay for his education for four years. He later discovered, that's not always how it works. Jackson, a wide receiver, says he was asked to transfer after last season, two years into his college career. "They had an oversigning issue," Jackson said. "They had to free up a few scholarships, and coach [Jim] Tressel told me I probably wouldn't play and maybe Ohio State wasn't the place for me." Jackson said he didn't understand when he was being recruited that all scholarships are only good for a year, subject to renewal at the discretion of the school. He was never told that he might be asked to transfer if he wasn't performing up to expectations and the school wanted his scholarship for someone else

That was Wayne's first first down all year. Boy am I glad they took her off our games.
December 17th, 2011 at 11:53 AM ^
Coming into the second quarter, Pam does her best "Boom goes the dynamite" impression. I thought for sure she was going to throw that in there.

if someone could post periodic updaes in the thread that'd be awesome. I have to go xmas shopping with my fiance and can't find the score on espn.com from my phone

Not much other information, though, besides the score and what quarter it is.
