Good luck to Wayne State!

Submitted by Buzz on

I almost transferred to Wayne State in the late '80's from a public college in Northern California.

This would be really nice for the school and the city.  Best of luck to the TARTARS. (I refuse to call them the Warriors, I'm sorry.)

EDIT: For the benefit of the non-Michiganders/non-Detroiters on this board, Wayne State is a school in Midtown Detroit.  Their football team is playing for the D-II football national championship today against Pittsburgh State University (Pittsburgh, KS).

No, seriously, go on.  I have no idea what you're talking about and would like you to elaborate because I don't feel like googling what's so special about Wayne State today.

P.S. - This probably should be OT, unless your elaboration explains why it's not.

Perhaps instead of trying to come up with a sny remark, you could've just told me what was going on like the multiple people below who actually posted helpful comments.

Wayne State is playing in it today.  They are taking on the Pitt State Gorillas of Pittsburg, Kansas.

Pitt State has a pretty good QB and Wayne State has two RBs with over 1,300 rushing yards each.

The game begins at 11am and is available for viewing on ESPN2 and ESPN3.

11:00 AM on ESPN2, if I am not mistaken. Live from Florence,  Alabama, no less.

Having been born and raised in Metro Detroit, I know tons of people who went to Wayne State and there is quite the buzz, at least locally.

I'll be honest - I did not know they were competing for the D-II championship until the local news started giving an almost eerie amount of attention to Wayne State football, a hitherto unknown force in SE  Michigan.

I have no idea why it is this year, but this game used to be the first of a triple header with the D3 championship game and the Heisman. As someone who has made the trip many times, I loved the early game.... tailgate starting at Waffle House, a nap afterwards, and celebrate a GVSU victory all night long.

Yup, from a NYTimes article, August, 2000:

At Wayne State University in Detroit, ''There were some liabilities with Tartars,'' Mr. Marciani said. ''Not a lot of people knew what that was.'' The new name, Warriors, respects its heritage - Tartars were Mongolian invaders.

There is so much bad football being played to begin this game right now.  It is brutal.  And holy cow is it just me or does Dan Hawkins sound/look like Frank Caliendo?  Dan Hawkins and Pam Ward are almost impossible to listen to!

But at least it's still cool that Wayne State is on ESPN2.

So I was looking up some info on Wayne St and ran into an interesting story about current player James Jackson who is a transfer from Ohio St. Appears that the SEC isn't alone with over signing issues:

06/25/11 - James Jackson assumed that when he was offered a full football scholarship to Ohio State it meant that as long as he stayed out of trouble and kept up with his school work, the university would pay for his education for four years. He later discovered, that's not always how it works. Jackson, a wide receiver, says he was asked to transfer after last season, two years into his college career. "They had an oversigning issue," Jackson said. "They had to free up a few scholarships, and coach [Jim] Tressel told me I probably wouldn't play and maybe Ohio State wasn't the place for me." Jackson said he didn't understand when he was being recruited that all scholarships are only good for a year, subject to renewal at the discretion of the school. He was never told that he might be asked to transfer if he wasn't performing up to expectations and the school wanted his scholarship for someone else
