Going to Purdue Tonight

Submitted by GrowBlue on
Any recommendations for things I need to do on/around campus? Any good watering holes near Mackey? Etc.

Thanks!

I did my undergrad at purdue. I would recommend for the history side Harry's. Jakes is the popular student hangout. Scotty's brew house is pretty good. I really like the burgers there. XXX has the best burgers in town and brew their own root beer. Brothers is a decent chill bar.

Triple XXX Burger is nearish campus and was featured on Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives. I went there before a football game a few years back and I enjoyed it. Good root beer, innovative burgers. I'm unsure if they served beer, a decently lengthy walk to Mackey.

Chumley's is across the river just off State St/IN 26/South St  (122 N 3rd StLafayetteIN) on the Lafayette side of the river.  They have a TON of beers on tap.  However, I recommend Harry's and Triple XXX if you want the true "Purdue" experience.

Come to my place...

No, really, the adorementioned places are great and historical bars/restaurants. I hope you enjoy your time here. Take note of how windy this West Laf is - ridiculous!

I haven't been to West Lafayette in a few years, but do have this to add. Observations from when my friends and I trekked down there to watch U of M get blown out at Mackey in 2006, I believe:

1. Be prepared to see lots of men who look like they literally just climbed off their combine/tractor/farm implement of choice, changed in to different jeans (but did not change anything else, including shit-encrusted work boots) who will look warily at you.

2. If you want absurdly strong drinks that are cheap, and in an atmosphere that could best be described as "the budget Rick's," there's a place called Stacks. I think we may have blacked out there. On the bright side, if you're young (college-aged or thereabouts) and make it to said establishment, you'll be ahead of the curve with respect to talking to the ladies, as the odds are that you will not be wearing any of the following attire: Fubu (on a caucasian or non-African American individual);  a John Deere hat; skinny jeans, but not the kind that are popular now; any sort of attire declaring your love for a certain brand of farm implement/heavy duty machinery/semi truck vs. another brand; a natty light t-shirt; and/or, other such attire. If you've got a collared shirt on and jeans, you're already into the 50th percentile. Those are good odds.

The more you know. . .

Yes. i was about to add a Number 3: You will, invariably, meet a person with one or more or all of the following noms de guerre: Skeeter, Hawss, Big Boy, Bubba, Jimbo, Hawsschief (note: different than simply "Hawss," and the "w" and double  "s" is, I believe, the preferred spelling in W. Lafayette), Rusty, Shooter. Please note the foregoing list is demonstrative and not exhaustive.

This is unfortunate. That place was ludicrous, in a "hey, it's cool to visit here once in my life, make fun of people, and drink these concoctions that may or may not contain rubbing alcohol." Methinks their liquor costs probably sunk them. I feel like a normal-sized drink had about 4 shots in it; a double had, well, double that.

The owener of stacks was also the owner of Where else, across the street next to brothers.  When brothers openned up, jakes revamped their specials to match, and they couldn't keep both stacks and where else busy, so they closed the one with a lower capacity.  I don't ever recall drinks at stacks being particularly strong, but I also never made it there before late night.  Stacks also got hit with a 500$ fine per person when they got caught with over 100 underagers in there one night
