Go Buckeyes (Sunday, and Sunday Only)
I have heard the only way to remove the stench after rooting for Ohio is to take a bath in a mixture of pickle juice, captain morgan, and baby oil.
Lucky for me I already have 2 of these in my home. Will need to buy the third before Saturday.
do you not have Captain Morgan in house?!?
I drank it all last night celebrating the win over Illinois.
It has to be freshly pressed from only milkfed tender young babes. Otherwise, the dark lord will not perform the unholy magic necessary to scrub clean your soul.
actually thought I heard that tomato juice works
K9 flea bath shampoo works too, or so it has been written.
for obvious reasons. But I don't ever want to see that thread title on mgoblog. Ugh.
WANTING them to win and NEEDING them to win. Lets not get those two confused. We all need them to win, and rooting for them to win based on selfish ambition is different than flat out wanting them to win.
/I feel better now.
No one here LIKES the Buckeyes. It's just a means to an end.
but I can not bring myself to cheer for Ohio.
We're not rooting for OSU, we are rooting against MSU. We want MSU to lose!
In the same vein, one of my dad's favorite games is ND v. USC every year because 'one of them has to lose'.
Wow, this brings it full circle. Thanks bama blue, just the rationalization I needed for the unholiest of ceremonies which will commence at 4pm on sunday.
(wood-knocking as I bang this out).....After we beat PSU
FUCK THAT
That outburst of anger was not towards your point being made, but towards the title. change the thread title. you're just asking for it.
I can't bring myself to root for tsiO no matter the circumstances. I hope Michigan claims the title, but I can not and will not for any reason ever support that school. That's why I have the 2007 and 2008 MNCs on DVD, so I can watch them get embarrassed time and time again.
not rooting for OSU is no different from Dantonio refusing to root for UM a few years ago, which would have given MSU a trip to the rose bowl. we can be better than that.
I think the more OSU fans you've had to endure firsthand, the harder it is to 'rise above'.
I'm glad you're here to tell us these things.
Chewie, take the professor in the back and hook him up to the hyperdrive.
I can still remember that sinking feeling when Ginn Jr returned the opening kick for a TD in 07. I felt better as the game started swirling clockwise for Ohio.
If it works out that way, great. Can't ever bring myself to root for OSU, though.
Yeah I was asked by my girlfriend if I could root for the buckeyes this morning... I answered yes and then immediately showered. I still feel dirty, but maybe a new banner will cleanse me.
Got to agree. I mean if they win, at least we have a shot at a share of the title. If they lose, then MSU gets to sit up on top by themselves. Gotta say, rooting for the Buckeyes is the lesser of two evils in this scenario
Not just a shot at the title - we play PSU earlier in the day, so if we've won, an OSU win gives us the title.
I'm rooting against both teams, just rooting against Ohio less.
good point of view.
When I see the final score I will be both satisfied and unsatisfied.
Even if Ohio loses, take satisfaction that they will drop into a tie for third if we win and Wisconsin beats Illinois.
I will absolutely root for OSU - otherwise I won't, b/c I think a Buckeye win in that situation would cost Michigan the No. 2 seed, and the championship would of course be out of reach.
Anyway, not rooting for OSU to win if Michigan wins makes you the equivalent of Mark Dantonio, hating your rival more than wanting to win yourself. Also, since when does anyone want to see MSU win? It's not like OSU is playing Northwestern.
This assumes a Michigan win. If they somehow yak it up to Penn State, I'll go back to rooting for my usual team in any OSU/MSU matchup: random meteor.
I agree with the premise of your thread, but it is a little premature. However, if you were just trying to liven up an otherwise slow Friday morning, well then....well-played.
I've got the day off from work today, so I figured I'd spice things up (and I figured the debate would arise at some point).
I think we'd want MSU to win if Michigan loses to PSU. An OSU win in that instance would make them the No. 2 seed, whereas (I think) Michigan would be the No. 2 if they finish with the same record as the Buckeyes, i.e., if the Buckeyes lost.
I want some directed meteors.
I want one to hit the MSU bench just after tip off so they declare OSU the winner by forfeit. Then I want a second one to strike the OSU bench and wipe them out after we've earned a share of the title.
Something like this-
I remember people talking on this very blog in the past about how stupid MSU was because they wouldn't root for UM in football when a UM win meant MSU would benefit. People talked about how childish and stupid it was and how "little brother-ish" MSU was because they were biting off their nose to spite their face.
When you care more about hating someone else....anyone else, rival or not, than loving your team...I would say you have a problem. Bottom line here is an Ohio win means if we beat PSU we get a piece of the B1G title. If that doesn't outweigh your hatred for Ohio I think you need to get your priorities straight.
Are you talking about OHIO?!? I thought buckeyes were poisonous nuts.
I laughed out loud until I realized I'M from Ohio. I'll just pretend they are referring to Hoke's "Ohio" for tsio.
Weird, but that is taken from Youngstown State's Student Newspaper. Although I did laugh when I read it, it's from an April Fools type edition. Yay YSU
The enemy of my enemy is my enemy.
Go wash your mouth out with soap for uttering such filth
Well, we have to beat Penn State first. Should we do that, Ohio will get my full support in the Sunday finale. Winning a Big 10 title overrides any impulse I might have against rooting for Buckeyes. Only a Spartan would put their petty hatred above their personal gain.
Someone please delete this thread, or at least change the name!
Change it to "who to root for this weekend, or something like that, please!
I root For Michigan. f*** ohio, f*** sparty. I will be watching the wings instead.
Exactly, you root for Michigan, so why wouldn't you want Michigan to win a Big Ten Title???
I refuse to say Go ____ until we beat PSU on sunday, then I will be all in for the buckeyes, but until then I'm not going to dirty myself by saying this if we just lose on Sunday anyway.
If you don't root for Ohio on Sunday if Michigan wins, then you are more of an Ohio hater than a Michigan fan, plain and simple.
I'll be pulling for the Bucks (assuming we beat PSU). Anybody who doesn't is just a moron or a turd. Who wouldn't want a B1G title? I don't care if it's not an outright win, it'd still be a huge milestone.
As long as you don't add "State" while cheering for them. Stick it to them while "cheering" for them.
I'm planning on doing the opposite. I don't plan on cheering for them, but I'm going to call them "Ohio State" until Sunday.
The only thing better than an Ohio win on Sunday:
I could understand if the Buckeyes were playing anyone else... but when they are playing against Michigan State, and we can claim our first share of the Big 10 championship since 1986, go Buckeyes, for 1 game and 1 game only! I think different rules should apply when your 2 least favorite programs are playing against one another; sometimes the overall balance of things leads to it making sense to root for one of them..
But yes, first priority...go Wolverines against Penn State...
"Beat MSU"
"Potential Destinations for Semi-Cataclysmic Meteor Strikes"
"Even if they win, OSU are still a bunch of losers"
"Who to root for this weekend"
I'm sure ya'll will come up with more.
"Because a stadium implosion seems (unfortunately) unlikely..."
It's a simple rule. I always root against Ohio except in the case that it directly benefits Michigan for them to win. If we beat PSU, then that caveat kicks in and I'll have to root for Ohio, as dirty as that makes me feel.
I will never ever cheer for Ohio. Never.
I will, however, happily cheer for the demise of Michigan State. I am rooting for Michigan State to lose. Not for Ohio to win.
Right, so you'll be rooting for Ohio to win.
I saw the title of this thread. I will NEVER utter those foul words. However I WOULD like to see Sparty lose to them.
This thread is full of win. Rooting for the Buckeyes is like playing wingman for a buddy that is trying to score and being set up with a troll. Its the right thing to do for the team, but you feel dirty for weeks afterwards.
I would feel dirty for exactly zero seconds if OSU beats MSU after we beat PSU. I would feel like a big ten champion immediately.
Figure out a way to root against MSU without rooting for OSU. Otherwise...
...she will find you.
I'm rooting for MSU to lose, totally agnostic to Ohio's role in that outcome.
You can root against MSU without actually rooting for Ohio and once the UM game is done I might do that. However, if we lose (guh!) I'll be wanting MSU to win so we can seal up the #2 seed.
How can you root for one team to lose, but not simultaneously root for their opponents to win?
Since when did rational thought become involved when it comes to sports fandom? Knock it off.
Isn't that essentially the essence of schadenfreude?
You view the game as MSU vs Ohio.
I view the game as MSU vs UM.
Only losing matters.
There is no Ohio.
Regards,
Jack Handy
The nice thing about the timing of the games on sunday; we play at 1, they play at 4. So, if for some crazy reason we dont beat penn st and an ohio win is no longer of any value to me, I can go back to my buckeye hating ways.
Lesser Of two evils. Sparty outright title and sharting the title with your 2 hated rivals. No brainer.
Edit: I realize I said sharting instead of sharing. I'm not changing it
I will not root for them.
However, if somebody gave me the power to pick a winner, I guess I would go with them.
There hasn't been enough angst here recently. Well played, sir.
Maybe not the best day to put this title up with our ladies taking on Ohio in their Big Ten Tourney game.
Forgot about that. Title amended. Forgiveness please.
A violation of NCAA Bylaw 8.008-5 making both teams ineligible and forcing forfiets would actually be ideal.
Wait, that's an option? Oh well, then I want to root for that!
Especially if a forefit is counted as a loss; no banners for anyone else in that case. The tears would be fantastic.
thinks its better for me to shut up.
Oh, look, we all know that of we beat PSU, it'll be better for us if OSU wins. It's still distasteful.
root for Ohio here. If Ohio loses, Michigan State wins the big ten outright and in my opinion, MSU fans are so much more annoying than Ohio fans, If Ohio wins (and we do too), we get a share of the big ten. Man up, feel dirty, cheer for Ohio to win
No. Never. Screw the Bucks, always and forever.
If they happen to win, so be it.
Those of you actively rooting for them are seriously misguided. You must never root or encourage the evil that is from Columbus.
Like I said, if they happen to win, fine. But root for them? Hell no.
You, sir, are a man of principle, honor, and vision. No. Never. Always and forever.
Who do you think John Beilein will be rooting for? Or Zack Novak? You don't think they'd like a B1G Title ring?
It's possible that my sarcasm meter is off, but I'm pretty sure you're the misguided one. You'd rather see TSIO lose than Michigan have a chance at a B1G title?
I can cheer for Ohio to beat Sparty. I just wish there was some way both teams could lose this game.
I will be very glad (ok, ecstatic) if things work out so that our team is co-cham[pion of the Big Ten. But the words, "Go Bxxxs," will never escape my lips or even cross my mind under any circumstances. In this rare instance, hatred is just more important than joy.
"Hatred is more important than joy" is such a little brother cop-out. You're a coward.
In this rare instance, hatred is just more important than joy.
How very Sparty of you....
Honestly, I don't understand the attitude that you NEVER root for Ohio. If by 3:15 on Sunday, Michigan has dispatched the Lions and we need the Buckeyes to beat MSU to give us our first Big 10 Conference Championship in over a quarter century, I'm praying to God, Allah, and the Pantheon of Asgard to make it happen. I don't understand how any true Michigan fan could feel differently.
The banner is ALWAYS the primary goal. It shouldn't be wishing misfortune upon your enemies.
Think of the joy Novak and Douglass would get from a Big Ten title. Is your hatred more important than that?
I always root for UM's best interests.
Thus, Go Bucks.
Now excuse me while I go vomit.
I agree with your comment, and have vomited. Go Ohio. This weekend. Blegh
Just hope we win the B1G title. That's all you have to say. However that works out, hey, stuff happens.
rooting for the Bucks and I don't feel the least bit dirty about it. Ultimately I care about what is best for Michigan more than I care about what is bad for Ohio.
Go Buckeyes!
I have thoughts of rooting for ohio. I understand that I should never root for ohio but please explain to God that if ohio wins and we win; we share a Big Ten Title.
I promise to continue Schadenfreude against ohio. However, in this instance, it is much better to have schadenfreude against lil bro for this will help us.
I will continue my financial support to the Church and School. I will say 10 Hail Mary's before the game even though I am NOT Catholic. I will get a full-immersion baptism to make me holy again as I feel so dirty.
I don't get the people that are having trouble rooting for an OSU win. Alot of them are probably the same people that criticized Dantonio for rooting for OSU in 2010 (IIRC) when a Michigan win would have helped give them a share of the conference title.
OSU and UM interests don't align together very much. This is one of those times that it happens. Rooting for OSU is the same as rooting for Michigan in this instance. If it helps people, think of it as rooting against MSU. Because that's what it really is. You could insert another conference team in the place of OSU and we'd still be rooting for MSU to lose. It just so happens that MSU is playing OSU.
Somewhere deep down inside it is tickling me pink that you are having to cheer for OSU in order for you to back into a BIG championship.
If it helps to drown the sorrows of football season, then we're glad to help.
Hey, look... Denard just scored another last minute touchdown...
You can't drag me any further down than I am. I have accepted terms that we will never beat you again.
As for the other turds, errr replies, Backing in is when you need another team to lose in order for you to advance. If you were to beat MSU and win the BIG, that is not backing in. If MSU was to lose to OSU and as a result you gained a 3rd of the title, that is backing in.
Note: that I am neither a OSU or MSU slappy, so nothing hurts me in this race. It is watching your fan base on your knees praying for something out of y our control to happen while cheering for your MORTAL Enemy.
As for MSU falling short, a #1 seed in the NCAA tourny, in my opinion, is far from short.
Or any other title at the rate your school is going...
But please, someone who is so inexperienced in conference races shouldn't be schooling us in how it works. Everyone needs someone to lose to win a conference title. MSU doesn't control their destiny if Purdue and Iowa don't help them against us. OSU needed Indiana's help. The fact that the game comes towards the end of the season vs. the beginning means nothing.
Backing in, if such a thing exists, is when you're behind, and the team ahead of you collapses, usually due to some injury or something beyond their control. A situation where if the event didn't occur, they would have easily grabbed the title one their own. MSU losing at home to Penn State to end the season might be backing in. Losing to OSU? Not hardly.
It's not backing in when you've beaten both of the teams involved.
That is all.
How is winning six of seven games, including four straight on the road, "backing in"?
It's not, obviously. Just Ohio being petty, as expected. Watch, if everything falls our way on Sunday and we wind up in a three-way tie for first, our thrid of the title won't be "legitimate" because we "backed in". I'd normally find such flawed logic puzzling except that it will be being issued by Spartan and Buckeye fans in which case it will make complete sense.
Petty and small. Tell me, what hurts more. The fact that you guys are going to fall short of expectations this season despite being one of the most talented teams in the country because your coach couldn't keep egos in check, or the fact that after Sullinger bolts for the pros this season, any chance for true basketball glory in the near future will be gone?
I Think title needs to be changed to go ohio
I'll root for them, but I could never bring myself to type out "Go B******s" (see? couldn't do it).
#WINOHIO
Rare win/win for us either way. One of our rivals has to lose. I'd prefer the outcome to result in a share of the B1G Title. If not, and Ohio loses, we get a two-seed in the B1G tourney and avoid the dreaded three-seed. Either way, GO BLUE!! beat PSU!
PS - I live in Ohio and have to deal with their BS. Not many Sparty fans down here to ruin my day. I will have to endure their misguided thoughts that our destiny was controlled by them and that the only reason we got a share of the title is because of them (their brains really do function this way). THAT SUCKS!
[EDIT] Told you... see phork comment above "back into" a title
You're wrong. It is absolutely not a win-win scenario for us. If TSIO loses, then it's definitely a lose-win scenario, with Sparty the winner and us (and TSIO) the losers. It's a win-win if TSIO wins, because then we're co-champs and we get to watch Sparty blow up at having to share a title with us.
the title of this thread.
those two words should never, ever be put next to each other on this blog.
this is a sad day here at MGOBLOG
"Watching MSU and OSU play is like watching the Iraq-Iran conflict. You don't want either of them to win. You're just hoping a bomb goes off or a meteor hits or something."--Michael Bradley, WTKA
I'm rooting for a Big Ten Championship on Sunday.
A 1 point Ohio win over MSU with both Sullinger and Green getting suspended for the B1G tournament????
Now, there's something to root for!!!!
This whole thing is dumb. It's simple, I hope Ohio State beats Michigan State. I want Michigan to win the Big Ten title and that is the only way for it to happen. I don't feel bad, I don't feel like I need to shower, I'm not going to vomit... none of that. I hope OSU wins, it's easy.
Amen!
I found myself pulling for O v Sparty last fall in Columbus, when O did not seem to be a great threat to our own success. Admittedly, I have been called out here before for lacking sufficient hatred. I'll keep working on it.
We must beat Penn State first. OSU/MSU follows our game which sets up nicely. I have major doubts that Ohio will be able to pull off the win after watching them against Northwestern. But we'll see what happens.
Sometimes I root against someone. But never over Michigan's interests. Michigan's best interest is to win a Big Ten title for the first time in WAY too long. If that means OSU wins, go Bucks! Ohio has won 24 times so far....somehow I've survived that; one more isn't going to make me particularly miserable. But in this case, it has the potential to make me very happy. People who would cut off their nose to spite their faces make no sense. And it's not even like they're playing some program you love...it's MSU. How much easier could they make it for you? Never hate anyone more than you love Michigan.
for MSU to lose!!!
Personally, I WANT OSU to be elite in all the sports I care about because their level of skill doesn't change how much I want us to beat them.
Although, that said, I could go for a nice 6 or 100 game winning stream against them in football, just to make up for them ruining my teenage years of watching The Game.
EDIT: this was slightly unrelated to the topic, but I don't see a problem in rooting for them when we need to, I guess is what I'm saying, even if it means something good for them.
I silently want the Buckeyes to win every game, except when we play them... they are so similar to us, and our program has so many that were spawned from them (Bo, Mo, etc) .
If you are a Michigan fan, you want OSU to lose every game, all time, forever, except maybe this next one if you can stomach it.
The same people who made me Michigan fans by age...well, little, both prefer them undefeated before the M game[s] every year, and that's how I was raised before I could ponder these questions myself.
I don't like the way he put it in that post, but there's something logical about wanting your rival to be good, or even great. It looks all the better when they trudge out of A2 at 11-1.
Interesting fact not in our rooting favor. The voice of Ohio Paul Keels was on the radio a little while ago and said that Buford is the only Buckeye who has ever played in the Breslin Center. This does not bode well for a team that is already having maturity/chemistry issues.
Root...for Ohio...?
It's not about rooting for Ohio so much as it's rooting for a Big Ten championship. Ohio is just a means to that end.
Phenomenal.
I can't EVER bring myself to root for ohio. EVER! That's a damn sin. I'll only be rooting for Sparty to lose in this one.
