"Northwestern fans can be both heartened and disheartened by the loss to Minnesota just like how nineteenth-century resurrectionists were heartened when they pried a heart from a freshly-buried corpse and then disheartened it when they sold it to a disreputable anatomist."
GLI Tournament Open Thread MSU vs WMU 3:30 pm. Mich Tech vs Michigan 7:00 pm
Might want to change the thread title. I opened this thinking MSU and Western were playing in the Championship today, meaning we lost to one of them yesterday and I didn't even know about it.
Uh it's actually the semifinals....
FYS will lose badly.
I want western. 2 straight losses to them in that building doesn't sit well with me. I want blood.
western's coach "This is our bowl game. western's football team isn't in one, state's is, Michigan's is and I'm not sure about tech".
Maybe because they're in Division II you fool.
I'll have the live-blog fired up at 6:30 here from JLA later this evening.
Go to: michiganhockey.net.
Ugly ass jerseys by western.
Every team in this GLI will have throwbacks since it was supposed to be outdoors.
Nike color and just overall design wins
I've wanted one of those for myself for a long time, but I haven't been able to find one. They're 1000 times better than the jerseys we wear now, and I don't even want to think about what we wore in the Ward and Knuble days.
"Big Ten sucks" chants.
Can you blame the B1G schools leaving the CCHA because they don't want to play in arenas reminiscent of intramural hockey arenas used by Tim Hortons Timbits?
They only show up when their team is doing decent. Didn't see any of them when their team was losing to Michigan 8-0.
Yeah, WMU fans have gotten really chirpy since their team started winning.
I mean really bad. As bad as we have been, I can't see any way we lose to a 3 win team without their best player.
I refuse to take any team lightly anymore in anything.
I'm going into this game as if tech is the #1 team in the country.
You sound like you're actually playing in the game.
Remember how I said, DON'T TAKE ANY TEAM LIGHTLY?
Do you as a Michigan fan really need more evidence that you should be that way? Haven't we suffered enough from taking teams lightly?
They just have no fight once they are faced with adversity, they just skate around looking for someone to feel sorry for them. Everybody is waiting for someone to step up and fix it, but nobody ever does. Bottom line, failed leadership on the ice.
oh I remember. "I refuse to take any team lightly anymore in anything.
I'm going into this game as if tech is the #1 team in the country"
I just think you sound ridiculous saying this, since you're not on the team and aren't playing in the game.
Michigan Tech was already one of the worst teams in the country before Pietila went to the WJC, without him they don't have a real goal scoring option. They're also 55th in defense, which will be the first time this year we played a team who statistically was worse than us.
GLI Blue. You can see them on MDen's site. Maize tomorrow.
state-western has always kind of been an underrated nasty rivalry. Back in the '86 GLI, state fans dumped beer, ketchup and mustard all over western's player Jim Culhane while he was in the penalty box (now the guy on the intermission report) and Culhane tried to climb up the glass to get them.
Very ugly scene and possibly why western hasn't been to the GLI until now.
Will Michigan have a band at this? Since there's a basketball game at the same time tonight. I'd assume maybe the alumni band splits in two? I mean someone's gotta play Can't Turn You Loose
is on the way
probably not since the chant is never that loud at the Joe and they always pipe in something for penalties
What a bunch of bullshit. It's never been shootouts, always been 2OTs.
Who made that ruling?!
I hate this gimmicky BS. I'm very worried that now they allowed shootouts in non-conference games, the NCAA Tournament is next.
western scores and gets the nod in the shootout.
Wow. Thought state would get the shit beat out of them. Both of these teams will lose tomorrow.
Michigan will wear road Blue tonight. tech is the host since this is "their" tournament (even though they haven't won it in decades)
It has been 32 years since MTU won the GLI. John Maclnnes left Michigan Tech in 1982 after 26 seasons, and their program hasn't won anything since.
That's really what we're wearing?
They organize and put the tournament on. Who wins it has nothing to do with whose tournament it is.
I'd bet a lot more Michigan students go home by plane for the holidays than Tech, and some Michigan families could be bowl bound by now as well.
I don't understand the move here because Pheonix Copley has struggled a lot this season, but he's going to start for MTU in net.
Was not expecting that. 1-0 Tech.
I think this is where I need to say DAMMIT WE HAVE TOO MANY UNIFORMZ but I'm serious. These jerseys suck.
You gotta be fucking kidding me!
Love Michigan, but GO TECH.
Everything about this game is shit
2-0 tech. michigan has not looked good from what i've seen. they just got some good pressure late in the period. let's hope they keep that going into the 2nd.
I don't understand it. We return probably 75% of a 1 seed from last year and then they turn into a CCHA bottom feeder
Hunwick covered up for a lot of miscues. Take him away, Brownie, and Merrill, and there's 3 reasons this team sucks. Losing Trouba to the WJC hasn't helped our D either
why are we so bad with all this talent? The PP has been awful for years and we tend to underachieve. Heck, if Hunwick wasn't there, we would've been pretty bad for the last 2-3 seasons
That's the million dollar question. We've got a ton of talent, but with the exception of a few games, have been completely and consistently outplayed by everyone.
