In case anyone missed it... The Saints/LSU superfan stole the show last night. Can't help but pull for this kid.

"Robertson has biliary atresia, a chronic liver condition, and is in need of his second liver transplant. However, he doesn’t let that get him down. He’s been kicking it with some of the NBA All-Stars so far."
Big props to those guys for having him out there. He seemed to really bond with Draymond Green (I won't hold that against Jarrius).

It *is* nice, but it would be even nicer if the resources (such as they are) were distributed among a bunch of disadvantaged superfans and not just a few (or one). I felt the same way when all the Larry Prout threads were popping up here.

I understand what you're saying. I'm not the biggest fan of the "nice thing done for person in a difficult situation" sports highlight of the month, but I don't begrudge them and I understand why people do it.
Fixing the problems of the whole world is pretty hard. And nobody can spread their compassion to all people who need it, even just people suffering from one disease or challenge.
But it is possible to invest in one person, to make their life better, to ease, even if briefly, the burdens they live under. It is impossible to help everyone, but it is possible to help one person.
And so people do that.
I suspect the answer is not to dilute the help from a substantial effort for one person down to a token for a lot of people, but rather to encourage more people to produce a substantial effort for other, individual people. YMMV.
EDIT: Perhaps a good recent example. News has emerged that Mike Ilitch quietly paid the rent for Rosa Parks for 10 years after she was attacked in her home. I doubt Rosa Parks was the only person who needed rent help (though she obviously is a unique person in our nation's history and deserved better than to scrounge for rent money), but I don't think that Ilitch's money would have been better served helping 100 people save $10 per month on their rent rather than just Rosa Parks for hers.

Very thoughtful reply ... thanks.

IMO the most important thing is that all of these people genuinely want to have a positive impact on the world and show compassion to all people not just those dealing with illness. One kid who went to my high school unfortunately committed suicide, and this was his note "A PERSON CANNOT SPREAD LOVE WITHOUT DOING WHAT MAKES THEM HAPPY, AND A PERSON CANNOT BE HAPPY UNLESS THEY SPREAD LOVE." I really took it to heart because of how close I was to him.

Glad to see that MSU education being put to good use.

I think he and Kyrie Irving are just trolling the media given the nature of everything at the moment.
It's working too.
February 18th, 2017 at 11:26 PM ^
Of course. People love to make themselves look stupid.
February 19th, 2017 at 2:38 AM ^
While I don't want to disagree with you, I have to ask, have you not heard of "Jackass the Movie"?
February 19th, 2017 at 1:21 AM ^
That's giving them a lot of credit.

Gordon got robbed last year. Hope he puts on a show.
February 18th, 2017 at 8:37 PM ^
when it was longer and 1 player at a time.

No idea the all star games were this weekend.
This stuff has fallen so far off the face of the planet.
February 18th, 2017 at 9:38 PM ^
Not to me. I love all NBA all the time. You act like this is hockey. I'd rather watch ping pong or hot dog eating than hockey.
February 18th, 2017 at 9:45 PM ^
I find competitive table tennis fascinating and would watch a good match over the NBA all-star game easily.
And, in fact, I did watch more table tennis than basketball during the Olympics this year, despite the rather disparate levels of coverage.

This is not to say that I'm one of those NBA haters that builds a straw man of how the game was played 15 years ago and then gripes about it. I think the NBA is in a pretty good spot right now, even if not quite as compelling as, say, two years ago.
February 18th, 2017 at 10:04 PM ^
I don't really care for the NBA, though I did in my youth. I'm glad I have at least 1 major sport that doesn't interest me. Hockey is great, though.

Stauskas needs to get himself an invite one of these years.
February 18th, 2017 at 9:01 PM ^
surprising that he wasn't in it last year considering it was in Toronto... I know he has zero star power but Canada loves to show off their players that are in an American heavy sport...
February 18th, 2017 at 8:58 PM ^
the only part of the NBA season I will watch... I just hope the dunk contest is good and isn't like some years when there is a ton of missed dunks...

Larry Bird would kill these guys, literally and figuratively
February 18th, 2017 at 9:31 PM ^
Aside from the recent story, courtesy of Kevin McHale, reminding us of just how great Bird was - by telling the opposing team the manner he would beat them on the game's last play and instantly when the ball left his hand, look at their bench and say "I told you,so" and then continue to head to the lockers, your reminder of what he would have done is probably true.
I do recall it was his habit at the all-star games, just prior to the three point contest, he would join the other contestants and ask, "Who's playing for second?" Some people have that quality where they just aren't going to be called for thie confidence.

Who let Oakley in the building??
February 18th, 2017 at 9:38 PM ^
Certainly not Jim Dolan, unless it was convenient for him to do so for some reason.
Shocked there isn't a "Jimmy Dolan - Please Make Sure This Sign Never Attends A Knicks Game" sign out there.

No pressure Steph....just sink that 1/2 court shot.
February 18th, 2017 at 9:36 PM ^
I'm bummed Lavine won't be back (even before he tore his ACL he wasn't in it) but he also shouldn't have won over Gordon last year. Rooting for GR3 and hoping for a contest as entertaining as the last two have been.
