Glenn Robinson III draft decision. (Hints at leaving)

Submitted by MichiganMan14 on

Glenn Robinson III was interviewed yesterday and made a few comments that hint at this being his last few games as a Wolverine.  Tough decision when you factor in his draft stock at the moment.(30s)  It will be very interesting to see what McGary does as well.  I'm of the mind that both need to stay and cement their draft stock in a weaker draft next season but I'm starting to get that feeling that all 3 of Stauskas, McGary and Robinson are taking their talents to the NBA.   It's hard not to be happy for them individually but it's tough losing underclassmen every year.  If we grab this Title I don't think anyone would really be too concerned though so lets just smoke Kentucky today and let the chips fall where they may!

But it would be a huge mistake for McGary and Robinson. If they stayed they would probably be drafted higher and have longer careers. Though you could argue another injury plagued year ends McGary's NBA chances, he is likely a second rounder so another injury without a guaranteed contract could be even worse.

U can't say if they stay they would be drafted higher especially in Robinson's case because for 2 years he's played out of position and he hasn't been comfortable doing so which has caused inconsistent results. If he was to do so for a third season, he would continue to hurt his draft stock. He's been a great teammate and done what has been asked of him it seems but at some point he has to do what's best for him in the long term and if it means he leaves then that is what he has to do.

I don't disagree, and that is why I used the word probably.  Robinson has some huge question marks, no matter what position he is playing.  He is a guy that will show well in drills and the combine like events and this could push his stock highter this year, but given the draft class this year and what things look like next year, you would have to believe that with another year he would be drafted higher.

But, with another year of experience he would be much more prepared and ready to stay on a team instead of going the way of many others who bounce between the NBA and the D league or out of the NBA.  No matter what, Robinson is not going to be so high a pick that he will get the benefit of the doubt from a team while he improves, he will need to be ready.

that would be ideal but that was supposed to be the case this year but McGary got hurt. now what if Irvin is just to good to keep out the line up and Donnal isn't ready to start, then u have him back at the 4 spot. Robinson wasn't recruited to be a stretch 4 but has played it out of necessity for the betterment of the team but to the detriment of his personal development. To me it's become apparent that in how Beikein wants to play, he prefers Robinson at the 4 especially offensively. Even if McGary was healthy this year, we wouldn't have seen many 2 big lineups for long stretches

They have Wiscy's Frank Kaminsky at 48.....seems crazy...guy is hard to stop and can shoot the long ball.

When looking at a player leaving, the decision should always be what's best for them.  You simply never know when you blow out a knee or shoulder and your decision to hang around makes no sense.

I hate the stinking rule that allows players to leave so early.  I'd like to see the same rules as in football.

Don't think so.  I'd like the have the same rules as we have for the NFL.

The decision the player makes should always be based on what is best for him.  He has only one body that has only so many years of producing at a high level.  A school; can always find a suitable replacement.  If you can go to the NBA or NFL and make the big bucks, even for a few years, go for it.  You can always come back and get your degree.

From what I know of this draft (Cavs fan here) the draft is really top heavy up to around 8 then the next tier to around 13 or so, then after that there are a lot of unknowns. Given GR3s athletic ability I would only see his stock rise through a summer worth of workouts for teams. His shooting, leaping ability, potential for translation to the nba game are top notch which will shine brightly against players like McDermott who aren't going to wow you with athletic ability.

He's very much a THJr. comparison

I didn't realize Glenn was so upset about playing the four position rather than the three. I           It sort of explains his performance during portions of the season.

I won't speculate about whether or not he'll return, but Glenn has also recently said, "I just want to make the best decision, the best decision for me, because I want to play this game for a long time. So if I'm not ready, I'm not ready," which sounds like he's open to returning, too.

We will be hard pressed to bounce back from losing 3 more underclassmen.  Our early attrition rate is what keeps teams like MSU and Ohio on par with us.  If we kept our kids....man we would be a juggernaut.  I know a select few kids leave from an acute handfull of schools every year....but we seem to lose guys that seem to be Second round types early which is tough.  Glenn is potentially a 1st round talent......he just hasn't arrived yet and reached it and foregoing 2 years when you have yet to blossom at this level of competition is really risky and possibly ill-advised.  If he comes back next season and goes Lottery in the 2015 Draft he will have made himself a ton of money. Same with Mitch.

I was going to put a diary together about how ridiculously loaded MSU's teams have been(in terms of rivals ranking and experience) adding 4 and 5 stars together with years of experience, Izzo averaged over 40(the equivalent of 8 5* freshmen or 6.7 5* sophomores etc. Thing is, Beilein won his first B1G championship with a score of 6 on that scale, and went to the Championship game with a roster with a score of 13. On paper, the current team Beilein has is the most talented he has ever had. If all 3 sophomores leave, on paper next year's team will still be the second rated roster ranking of Beilein's career. MSU however, will return(on paper) the worst roster Izzo has ever had. This is not an exaggeration, even Izzo's NIT teams were loaded with NBA talent.

I would second Turd's request here - if you ever decide to put this together, this could potentially be a pretty solid entry. It would be cool to see some manner of experience rating like what you mention tracked over the past several seasons - perhaps even throw in a couple other Big Ten teams to show where they sit in the conference too.

Bingo.  MSU is very fortunate right now - 5 star big men don't come back for their senior year....nor junior years.  They are drafted on potential after their freshman or sophomore year.  Payne stunk (look at his stats) as a freshman but most 5 star big men of his caliber would have left after their sophomore year.    Most of his peers are in the NBA for 2 years already.

Dawson is a 5 star HS All American.  He had a very good freshman season then blew out an ACL his sophomore.  He came back, and didnt develop anything.  This year he looked like the same player as last year until his injury - uninterested, unmotivated in half his games, lacking any jump shot, playing well below potential  He came back from injury and now is playing crazy motivated and it shows.  He still has no offense game outside of putbacks and dunks but a guy like that if developed correctly and shown how to shoot a 10 foot jumper would be a top 12 pick.   Many of his peers from his HS All American game are in the NBA, some for 2 years already.

Appling is a 4 star HS All American.  Not sure if he had the upside of the other 2 above but is projecred as a 2nd rounder - a major luxury to have a sr pg in today's game.

Gary Harris is a 5 star all everything.  But his shooting % and 3 pt shooting % has dropped from his freshman to sophomore year... even as he has Payne to take away the attention.  So he turned into a volume scorer in a way.  Meanwhile Nik S has taken all the focus when GR3 was not making progress earlier this year and Caris was finding his role and Mitch was out, and has improved his FG% and 3 PT FG% even as he got way more attention and become option #1 in the offense.

Someone like Valentine I look at his size, his pedigree, and I think he'd be contemplating the NBA draft if coached by Jordan and Beilein for 2 years.  Instead he is going to be a 4 year player at MSU because he can't figure out his behind from his front half the time.

In a way this is why MSU is "loaded" -  every other team with multiple 5 stars and HS All Americans is contemplating reloading after 2 years... MSU is taking 3-4 years to develop most of these guys (Harris is the exception but again Harris came to MSU college ready and has not progressed much at all) so they benefit in a backwards way from how slow they develop people.  Meanwhile the same players (peers) at Kansas or Duke or North Carolina are gone after 2 years.  Same here at UM.

The NBA drafts on potential which GR3 has a ton of wether or not he has reached it here is of little importance to NBA scouts.  Very few seniors got drafted high anymore because they are what they are with little room to up their ceiling.  I'm not saying thats the right thinking, but it is how the NBA looks at these players.

March 30th, 2014 at 11:47 AM ^

I agree that the NBA scouts value potential above almost anything else.  And that's why the NBA has gotten worse over the years.  They keep drafting players that have "potential" instead of people that can actually play.  Except, the NBA isn't a place that talent develops.  Coaches play with the guys that can play, and don't have the time or patience to spend developing someone that might pay off in 2-3 years.  Because if they don't win in their current season, they might not be around in 2-3 years.

Couple that with the fact that NBA rosters are so small, and these project players routinely get dumped in 2-3 years.  You need to have at least one above average skill or trait to make it in the NBA.  And since everyone is super athletic, athleticism doesn't count.  Nik is a fantastic shooter and can live off of that.  McGary (back willing) has hustle and energy to spare, and given his height can make it as a solid bench player at the very least.  GRIII?  He doesn't have much of a standout skill.  Good in college, but that's about it.  Reminds me a lot of Darius Morris when he came out.  Needed to improve some of his skills, but chose to make the leap.  And we all know how that turned out -- dumped in 2-3 years and currently in the no-man's land of 10-day contracts.

Not sure how you justify this statement. If it wasnt for early attrition, most EVERY program would look vastly different. Something makes me think OSU would have been better if Deshaun Thomas and Sully were seniors. Oden and Conley for 4 years? Yes please.

Don't understand where this idea that Michigan sends so many players to the NBA early compared to other programs. I'd like to see the numbers of early leaves at osu and michigan under Matta and Beilein, but do not currently have the time to do so

for our team but I truly think Glenn & Mitch absolutely need another year. Though, I've always had an odd feeling that all 3 leave this year. Selfishly, we would be the best team in the country next year if Nik, Glenn & Mitch returned. Some coaches just know how to get guys to stay for the betterment of the future of a program, some actively want "one & done" guys and guys like JB tend to tell a kid to follow his heart (especially if the kid is the family lottery ticket). So, I think he'd tell all three that they would personally benefit from another year but I don't see him pitching/being like some coaches do (especially in CFB). So, in my mind, keeping ANY of the 3 is just a bonus. Another year and all 3 are top 10 picks. This year? Stauskas is the only sure 1st rounder and he could go top ten or fall to the back of the round but he is a first round guy. Any returning from the 3 is a bonus as I think all are leaning NBA regardless of inquiry results.

He cost himself millions by not going pro last year. At this point it looks like the longer he stays in school the more he will cost himself. If he leaves after this year he will most likely still be drafted on potential. If he waits another year and doesn't totally dominate the league he won't get drafted at all.

I just attended the west regional and was not impressed with Nick Johnson or Aaron Gordon at all. I'd say GRIII has a higher ceiling than Gordon, but Gordon will still get drafted higher.

I'm just hoping for a 3 B1G final four. Then can Purdue start chanting B1G against any non-conference opponents? Oh wait, we're not douchebags like SEC football fans...

I agree with you, but to some extent this would mean he would have to be thinking that he is going into the NBA because he is not good enough to raise his stock.  If that is the case, then he should go because he is in trouble mentally.  However, most of these guys have the attitude they can come back and dominate and prove they are a lottery pick, which he may very well be in a week draft class next year.

I suspect he and Mitch will at least ask for the advisory board opinion, it will be interesting to see what they say.  Though it seems like they are always on the optimistic side of reality.

GRIII does NOT have a higher ceiling than Aaron Gordon...come on now. Gordon is taller, more athletic, a better all around defender, handles the ball about as well as GRIII, and is 20 months younger. The only thing GRIII has over Gordon is a more developed midrange game. Take off the maize colored glasses.

I'm an IU grad and a huge IU bball fan. I come here because I've had season tix to UM football since '92 and am just as avid of a Michigan football fan. I said Gordon would be drafted higher, I just think GRIII has a higher ceiling. I don't really buy that Gordon is more athletic. They're both great athletes. If GRIII develops his handle and gets a consistent outside shot going he could be scary good. He would be a taller version of Victor Oladipo basically on offense.

Gordon dissappered during yesterday's game and wasn't all that impressive on D either. He was getting dominated by Kaminsky and kept switching on screens unneccisarily, putting Johnson in a bad spot every time. The league is full of 6'-9" or taller über athletic guys, unless he works on his game a ton he'll just be untapped potential a la Marvin Williams from UNC.

He almost left last year so I think he wanted to come back, develop some more, and go for a title run. With how he's been playing the last month or so he's starting to remind us of why he was contemplating leaving last year.

He's going to keep rising up draft boards especially when he goes to Chicago for the combine and does some individual work outs with teams. That's part of how THJ shot up last year. That's why I don't put a whole lot into these various draft boards. I'd say that young man is gone along with Stauskus and maybe Mitch.

alum96

I agree. GR3 is exactly the type of guy who will wow people when they get to the "measurables" part of the draft process and probably move up 10 spots.

What Dakich said during the BTT when he said all 3 will leave stuck with me.  Also some of Mitch's comments have me thinking he is gone.  Some people will read it differently but when a guy says I have a long career to think about that makes me think he is thinking of his NBA future, not his long career (i.e. 1 more year at UM).

Jordan Morgan has said similar things when it comes to "playing in front of these fans one more time". I think they are both just expressing their happiness to continue to be playing in the tournament.

Way to look passed the game today and completely ruin my 10 hours of anticipation. My excitement is now replaced with anxiety. All I want is to reload, not rebuild. I said it about Morris and was right, I hope I'm wrong about Robinson but the kid can't even dribble past a defender that isn't a chubby 4. If he goes pro this year he will not succeed in the NBA, he will be stuck in D League purgatory.

Every time I've watched GRIII this past month or so, I've thought that he was a legitimate first round draft pick. I know I'm a bit of a homer, but that kid is going to be an All Star in the NBA someday.

Players in college these days are just in too much of a hurry to get to the NBA. I wish they would realize that there is nothing wrong with staying in school longer, which allows them to finish their degrees and become better players.

The money argument is ridiculous and so over used. I'm sure he isn't hurting for money anyway since his dad made millions in the NBA. Anyway, I am just saying I wish players were not in such a hurry. Enjoy college...keep chasing titles. No hard comes from staying at least another year and especially staying two more years and earning a degree.
