Glenn Robinson III best recruit since Horton?

Submitted by lukepanici on

When he first committed we all knew very little of him but ever since then, the reports have gotten more and more promising. At this point I don't think there is much question about the fact that he could be a five star prospect before he steps on campus. He's still growing, gaining athleticism and absolutely lighting up his competition. I haven't seen any articles or scouting reports that have talked about a single weakness in his game. I'm starting to think he will be the most highly touted bball recruit at Michigan since Daniel Horton committed to the Wolverines. Just wanted to bring this up as a topic of discussion..what is everyone's opinion on how great this kid could be in Ann Arbor?

I am basing the ranking off scout.com where horton was rated the #2 pg in the country coming out of high school.

Based purely on recruiting rankings, he's not quite as high as either Manny or Peedi. Obviously, there is much time for those to change.

Also, what do people think about the possibility of adding Steffen Jankovic to that recruiting class? He's supposed to be an amazing shooter. Add that with Stauskas' shooting and GR's athleticism, and we could have a pretty formidable class. Given that our guards should still be good, we could have one of our more balanced teams in a long time, in that we would finally have guards, wings, and bigs . . .

I haven't heard anything about him until now.

One new target on the 2012 radar is Stefan Jankovic, a 6-foot-9 skilled power forward. Jankovic is a Croatian born Canadian that’s ranked No. 84 in the latest Scout Top 100 rankings. He’s the prototypical face up or “Euro” four with size, shooting ability and some ball skills. At one point most assumed it was only a matter of time before he committed to Wake Forest but now it’s reevaluating his options. He tweeted last week about a nice chat with Coach Beilein and played very well at the Pangos Camp out west and listed Michigan first when asked for a top 5 ($).
It seems like if the right recruit comes along the coaches want to add one more to the 2012 class.

both just missed being 5 stars, and it's way too early to say Robinson will get a 5th star.  Basketball recruits rarely make that kind of jump this late.  I'd guess he'll settle in in the Smotrycz range (he's 50 to Rivals now and 60 to ESPN).

The reason I brought this topic up is because of the amount of coverage he's been receiving lately and it sounds like he's really become a do it all small forward without really any significant flaws to his game. His rise has been similar to that of smotrycz's but he still has another year of high school ball to play. Hopefully his rise continues at the pace it's going right now

GRIII definitely has holes in his game.  Watching his AAU highlight videos will show that he can't really shoot the ball well for a wing player.  That being said, I'm not sure he really needs to shoot much with his athleticism.

I just hope that GRIII gets to play Hardaway for at least 1 yr and hopefully two. Tim, Trey Burke, Carlton Brundidge, and Glenn could be scary. Im smelling Big Ten titles baby!

Horton. What could have been if he played for a real coach and actually gave a damn every time he took the floor...

The kid has serious talent and could take over games when inspired.

I think Stauskas was going to move up further in the rankings. He got dinged though, so he won't make it to some of the events that he would have otherwise participated in. Doesn't matter to us about the rankings though - his play will still be just as good when he gets here.

This seems like an odd formulation. Wasn't Darius Morris a better recruit than Horton? Usually that structure implies that there has been no one better since the first named player.

28 D.Harris ('03)

31 D.Sims ('06)

34 C.Harris ('07) [ESPN #38]

36 C.Sims ('03)

50 G.Robinson ('12) [ESPN #60]

I would say the answer is no.  Dion Harris was the highest regarded (top 30) and a few others were top 40 which is well higher than Robinson is for now, but he still has another year left so things could change.

Sims was always soft but ended up playing a bit in the NBA and having a solid pro career overall - for a college player thats pretty decent.

Harris had a nice career for Michigan and ended up playing in Europe.  I don't think that's atypical for a top 50 player.

Outside of the top 10, most guys aren't going to be quality NBA players, and even in it.
