From UM per Glasgow: We have been made aware of Graham's probation violation and he has been suspended...cont'd

From UM/Glasgow- "subject to punishment through the judicial system, the student-athlete alcohol policy and the Michigan football program."

I wish he'd taken his probation more seriously.  He had an opportunity here that's been taken away for a length of time TBD.

He messed up.  Now, let's hope he learns from this mistake.

I don't think this applies to Glasgow becuase he was drunk driving, but judges in Michigan are just awful assigning alcohol testing. Very often these judges assign alcohol testing to people who are in trouble for nothing at all related to alcohol. Things look a lot worse when you look at Oakland county; a couple of the judges send everyone to JAMS, which probably not so coincidental they own. How a judge is allowed to profit from supposedly serving the public is beyond me.

JAMS is a program where you basically cannot drink at all for a very long time. Coworker of mine (who is probably an alcoholic) has gotten two DUIs and has told me all about it. You have to be tested a certain number of times a week. You randomly get calls at any time during the program. You will always be called in for testing like 4 times during Thanksgiving and Christmas. You have to get special permission to travel, because you cannot miss getting tested. It sounds completely terrible.

I totally agree with your statements, in Washtenaw County Judge Simpson and Judge Tabby are especially bad. Interestingly enough, Judge Simpson is set to be on trial for his obstruction of justice relating to his 26 year old mistresses DUI, and Judge Tabby himself got popped for DUI up north last summer and his brother the doctor had a sock with an ounce of weed in it at the stop. Not a sock he was wearing, but he just had a sock with lots of pot in it. Also, your statement that it doesn't apply to this case is correct. There is always alcohol testing after you plead for OUIlLs.

It may just be the area that i know, but if you complete most of the terms of a probable probation that could be considered "treatment" on your own (alcohol assessment and any susbequent counseling) you can avoid probation, alcohol testing, and license suspension entirely on a first offense. And yes, this is in michigan, just not washtenaw county. So if youre speaking only of washtenaw, i cannot speak on that. i just took it that you were speaking as if probation, alcohol testing, etc are standard everywhere, which they are not. it just depends on your commitment to avoiding court ordered treatment and taking it on yourself.

1.  He was supposed to have learned his lesson from an incident almost exactly one year ago.

2. There's a very good chance that Graham Glasgow is an alcoholic and as such he'll have to have a much greater life changing event before he'll "learn his lesson."

At some point, like immediately, Graham Glasgow must be held both responsible and accountable for his actions.  Making sure this young man gets his future in order seriously smacks of enabling the alcoholic.

At 10:00AM Sunday morning.  Either he woke up and started drinking, or he drank himself into a stupor during the night and his poor liver was still trying to metabolize the excesive alcohol he drank during the night.  Either way he has a serious problem and it's called alcoholism.  He either doesn't know when to stop, or he never actually stops.  Dollars to donuts, previously after having passed a brealthalyzer, he would get hammered knowing he wouldn't be tested again for a few days.

Your definition of alcoholism is absolutely false, and it's dangerous path towards treating all college students like they are alcoholics (which they are not). He was likely drinking for most of the day on Saturday, which may have been the case for about a third of students on campus this weekend.

My family has a history of alcoholism, and mislabeling the disease harms those who really have it and need help. I'm not saying he isn't necessarily an alcoholic, but you have absolutely no idea what it means if you think this is proof.

and thus are "breaking the law".  Tssk, Tssk.

I get that Graham put himself in this position by getting the DUI in the first place, but IMO this offense should impact only his path to regaining the priviledge of driving again (perhaps severely) but should not be considered criminal activity.

Unfortunate situation all around. Glad he's just been suspended for now though and can continue to grow with the support of the university and team.

He's got a lot of support while at UM & there won't always be someone there to keep him accountable.  I hope he learns from this & is better for it.

Well; better now than during the season I guess.  The kid's got time to make it right with himself and his teammates.  Hope he does so for his sake and for the sake of our OL.

Good luck, Glasgow. I hope you get the help you need. Hopefully there will be a time where look back on this knowing that you became a better person because of it.

The kids in college, might not even need help, you dont know his drinking situation, how often, how much.... Lots of kids drink as much as he did and do so socially, and are not dependent. Kids drink their tails off, make dumb choices, get in legal trouble. I agree that his actions are not to he excused (especially DUI), but dont automatically assume the kid needs "help", implying hes an alcoholic. Thats annoying.

Not the only one on here jumping to the alcoholic assumption. It's crazy how many people NEVER tied one on in their 20s (I know he shouldn't due to probation but c'mon) and could've blown over the next morning. Who knows maybe he had a little Hair of the dog when he woke up.

I tied one on many many times, however, I never tied one on after getting a DUI, being placed on probation, and suspended from my football team while still being subject to random screens. He is obviously not very smart or he isn't very committed to the team.

Never happened to me either. However, smart people do stupid things on occasion. Hopefully this is one of those instances.

I'm all for his suspension. Whether or not he gets booted from the team I leave to people with much more knowledge about the situation than myself.

Both have scholarships now.

Last year he was suspended for Spring practice and then the season opener.

It will be interesting to see what Harbaugh does if it is just this one probation violation, and nothing more happens before the season starts.

If I'm Harbaugh, I'm wondering if this says anything about the culture of the team. Who was he drinking with?
