Give the USC job to Tim DeRuyter

Submitted by Wolfman on

Hell, allow Hayden to do whatever he wants until the end of the season. Allow Fresno to finish the year with their head man, but securing him now would be a major get for this program.  JMO, but the guy knows California, has obviously recruited well there, and unlike Lane Kiffin, has also coached well there.   Let's not forget how he also turned every defense around that he's been associated with. In the h.s. football mecca that is S. CA., he just seems to be the perfect fit.                             ^By now, eveyone knows I can't get a paragraph here, no matter how many times I hit the enter button, but is it as obvious to everyone else as it is to me how much Kelly hurts ND by not utilizing his rushing attack enough. He has recruited some tremendous OLmen and some of the nation's top rbs. I'm not saying it is, but maybe a young man named Cierre Woods noticed the same damn thing.

Bruce Feldman mentioned Chris Peterson might be ready for a change. From Bruce Feldman, that's a strong statement about the direction of the coaching search.

For what it's worth, I'm usually the guy who laughs at the people who mention Peterson, Gruden, Stoops, etc.

In the past Peterson's reasons for staying at Boise had more to do with his family. IIRC, he has a son with cancer who was receiving specialized in-home care and his house is walking distance from his office.

He might be ready for a change when it comes to football, but I think it is hard to say without knowing his current family situation.

nose candy, but I'll be damned if can get a paragraph break.  In my writings on my processor, have no such problem. DelRio would be a good candidate, but I think it's safer to go with a guy that has actual college coaching creds just like Harbaugh did at U of San Diego where he won a NC to boot. Go with the proven commodity. If he can do it in central Ca., like you said, he damn sure can do it in S. Cal.  He's turned three defensives around as well taking them from the 100s into the 40s and below with far less talent. Additionally, I think it might be a more prudent purchase with proven results at the collegiate level.

It's an IE10 incompatability, so you are aware.  This site is getting glitchy, and yet no sign of the pos/neg bangs coming back either.  Either Brian has something big up his sleeve, or he's just given up on keeping things working around here.

Then your comments are rather misplaced. The site isn't that glitchy; the server move just messed some stuff up for unknown reasons. Fixing this shit can take a LOT of time, and rather than waste it putting band-aids on everything today, Brian is choosing to wait until the next site "version" is ready to roll. There seems to be this misconception that the site bugs aren't being worked on or talked about on the blog, but this was addressed ad nauseum when the bad stuff first hit.

Haven't worked for years. An overhaul to the site was supposed to come this past summer, and the only thing that happened was the voting and formatting got all glitchy. A lot of people who have done this kind of work says a lot of these patches aren't THAT hard.

When it's a hobby on the side you shouldn't expect prompt fixes. When it's a business that you have 24/7 to work on and a staff to cover things you're not doing letting things slide for years looks unprofessional. Especially when we've had a bye week with reduced content.

I'm an IT guy and a decent portion of my job is programming.  I understand the efforts that are required to maintain a system.  You misread what I had stated, I gave two options, one of which you described.  I don't work with asp or php, but I do have some knowledge with sql and a programming language called tcl, along with a solid "hobby" type background with css, html, and Adobe CS.

The site does still have many outstanding glitches.  The MGoBoard Page 2 glitch, the IE10 issues (though that is as much on IE, standard compliant version my ass), the lack of a moderation system...  I can't complain much, I've probably earned the site slightly over $20 from ad revenue.  But the site does lack a refinement that it could have.  Even the CSS could be reworked a bit.  Maybe not to the complexity of MnB, but you could definitely get closer than you are.

I'll be the first to admit, though, that as a free service, I have no room to complain.  I come here more for the content than the scenery anyway.

Brian's just stated several times that the next site "version" will be a major overhaul, so the continuous prodding or "Brian doesn't care" stuff is rather tiresome.

Maybe you could provide some assistance or insight to the staff themselves, as you're familiar with this stuff.

I could type my shit on my processor and do a cut and paste, but seems like a lot of work when every other thing I write manages a paragraph rather eaisly.  I guess I could do that to start a thread, but seems like a lot of b.s. just to answer one.

It would be like Harbaugh to Michigan after the LC days. Del Rio was an all american linebacker for them in the early 80's. He has played under a lot of good coaches and had a decent pro career. He has head coaching experience and just seems like a good guy. Recruiting may be new to him, but USC basically sells itself.

At one point (before Jacksonville eventually did him in, who would also do Tom Coughlin in) there were few better coaches anywhere than Jack Del Rio. Make no mistake about it, there are few better defensive minds in football than Jack Del Rio. His football pedigree is amazing, he's coached under some great coaches. He's an engaging guy, good reputation, and he's considered a great evaluator, and developer of talent. All of these things considered, he'd probably be a highly successful recruiter. Not to mention USC will likely drop big money on assistant coaches who are strong recruiters.

The guy went roughly .500 over 8+ years with a shitty organization in the same division as Peyton Manning (Byron Leftwich and David Garrard are slightly less awesome).  I don't think anyone else does any better in that situation.  They've also gone 2-18 going back to last year since he got fired.

I don't see Sumlin leaving Texas A&M just yet. USC is higher on the totem pole than Texas A&M, but Texas A&M has long been a sleeping giant of a program. They have top-notch facilities, a fertile recruiting ground, a dedicated fanbase, and virtually unlimited financial resources, and now that they're in the SEC and out of Texas' shadow (and have shown that they can compete at a high level in the SEC), they're poised to take their program to the next level. If Sumlin can be the guy who gets them there, he'll have no reason to leave.

Plus, he just built himself a huge new house in College Station. I don't think he did that with the intent of looking for a bigger stage.

True, but Sarkisian inherited a program that had just gone 0-12 and had been a raging dumpster inferno for six or seven seasons before he got there. He could get a long, hard look if USC strikes out on Petersen and Sumlin (and I don't think Del Rio is any more compelling a candidate than Sarkisian). Keep in mind that Pete Carroll was seen as a longshot when the job was open 12 years ago.

And Pete was the third choice.  Or fourth.  Whatever.  Jim Rome was calling it Southern California Community College at the time and saying it wasn't that great of a job anymore.  And then came Pete.  I also remember JIm mocking ohio for the Tressel hire.

Hiring DeRuyter now and letting him finish out the season with Fresno State would be unprecedented. If I was Fresno State's AD and DeRuyter tried to pull that on me, I would take a page from the Schembechler book and fire him immediately. Then again, USC hiring DeRuyter now and having him assume his duties immediately would also be unprecedented (and extremely stupid for both USC and DeRuyter). I don't think Haden will make any real moves until after the regular season is over. There's no way he can talk to anyone now, four weeks into the season, let alone hire someone. If he tried to strike a secret deal and it got leaked between now and the end of the season (which it inevitably would), then it would be a PR nightmare for USC.

By pulling Kiffin off the team bus at 3 AM in front of his team, firing him in an airport terminal, and refusing to let him get back on the bus to retrieve his bags (not to mention telling the press that Kiffin begged for his job), Haden was probably just making a show of how much he despised Kiffin and giving himself a head start on scouting potential candidates. I don't expect him to hire anyone until USC's season is over.

and that would be Hayden and DeRuyter.  That has been the problem for far too many years, letting more than necessary, i.e. any number greater than two what is going on.  Sark would be a good choice and should have been given the job in the first place.  But I think that ship has sailed.  The only coach in CA with a better program right now might be UCLA,might not be. Hell he has inroads to not only S. CA, but the S.F. area as well. Many coaches would be good for the job, but instead of dipping into the NFL, I'd prefer to give it to a guy that has proven himself in the college ranks, and his defenses will complement USC's offensive recruiting greatly.

On DeRuyter's side, his agent would have to know (you do realize that coaches negotiate through agents, right?), and thus his agent's partners and possibly his agent's office staff would know. On USC's side, Haden would have to keep his boss informed about the search, and if he were to strike a deal with DeRuyter, it would presumably need to be approved by the trustees. That's a lot of potential leakers.

I'm pretty sure one of the big problems during the RichRod hiring at Michigan was not letting the Board of Regents know about the terms of the deal. In that case, they even knew about the hire, simply not knowing the terms caused a lot of headache and problems.

I don't think secret back room deals are: 1. that easy to execute in a fishbowl like college football, 2. stay secret all that long (see #1.), and 3. don't necessarily lead to good outcomes.

Sark and Kiffin were vying for the job when it was given to Kiffin in the first place. Sarkisian was a USC guy anyway. NO other team in the PAC whatever is a marque team outside of USC. Why would Sark stay [at Washington] when he was an assistant of Carroll anyway? Use your brains.

As to the other names...Peterson is a great coach, but not a good fit for USC. Sark won't get offered because they aren't going to hire another PC guy. There is no chance Haden goes after any prior coaches with NCAA issues like Chip or the Vest. They will probably take another crack at Mike Riley at Oregon State (who has been USC's #1 choice the last 2 vacancies), and probably take a shot atSummiln at A&M. Del Rio is the safe choice...but is not #1 or 2 on the list. That being said Hoke wasn't our #1 choice and that turned out ok.

Lol, I say give it back to lane kiffin. Everybody deserves a second chance, and its just so much fun seeing them suck so bad. I just love watching cheating programs of that magnitude get their karmic reward.
