Gholston Suspended by Big 10
what a joke first by MSU and then the Big Ten. I cant equate Moutons low shot to this I'm sorry 2 personal fouls plus a punch does not make equal.
Blue is Faster
It's done with for this season, so you have to move on and have a strong finish to the season. But remember this for next year, and respond not by punching back, but my putting Gholston on his back. Pancake him. Just destroy him, cleanly and legally. Use this for motivation.
Good week for a bye week.
Insane to me that they aren't looking at the helmet twist. Doesn't take Sherlock to find the incredibly clear youtube video of it. And don't tell me he was provoked on BOTH instances.
No mention of the Facemask twist is pretty mind blowing, since it seemed that was the far more egregious act of the three.
This was surprising to me as well. Could'ce caused a serious injury, and Gholston certainly can't argue he was provoked.
But oddest of all is no mention of it by anyone - Gholston, Dantonio, or B10
Harmon40 "When the 'ol season is over, you and I know: it'll be Michigan again...MICHIGAN!"
Now Sparties have excuse come Saturday, "well if tom played we could of beat wisconsin"
Signed coach dantonio
"The millions, the proud, the Wolverines"
If they had the slightest bit of a conscience and didn't act like savages, then it wouldn't be an issue. They have nobody to blame but themselves and nobody is going to have any sympathy for them.
"People who love sausage and respect the law should never watch either being made."
the difference here is being way to aggressive while continuing the play after the whistle and then flat out assaulting someone regardless of it being during play or not. based on the rules it is simply easier to reprimand him for the punch than it is for the head twist and the body slam. path of least resistance if you will.

It's not enough, but at least the B1G stepped in and kept Saint Dantonio from stalling until after the Wiscy game. I still wish they would do the right thing at MSU, but we all know that isn't happening.
I think you could have made a case for a 2-game suspension, but whatever. The act of suspending him alone is embarassing enough. That little stigma will be attached to MSU's win from here on out.
I doubt that anyone will append any asterisks to the Spartan victory in 2011.
But this will be the lead story for the GameDay crew's first visit to E.Lansing for a big night game in... how long? A really nasty, embarassing story. Unlike the LSU suspensions, this one comes with prepackaged video.
Desmond better have a bodyguard. Quite seriously, I expect that he will. I see some unusually crazy threats of violence on an infamous Spartan message board.
Even though I shouldn't be, I'm still surprised that MSU didn't come out and suspend Gholston themselves. I understand the desire to appear to protect him, but so much can be avoided by being proactive, admitting failure, and welcoming or at least making it known that you accept whatever penalty is coming. Or the PR guys could have told Gholston to send out a Tweet or something to that effect. Jesus. No one is willing to take responsibility for anything these days! WTF?
Disgruntled former moderator. I got a lot of problems with you people!
But I agree with you on the fact that a suspension for Gholston was never, ever in doubt. So why not do it yourself and try to look good?
There is only one possible answer and that is that they thought there might have been a chance to get the one-game suspension imposed on another week, perhaps via a delay or something.
Not to mention that if you suspend the kid on Sunday or Monday, you have time to gameplan your defense without him. Not knowing until Thursday that he's suspended can hurt your team more. They must have been hoping the Big Ten wouldn't drop the hammer until next week.
But the Mouton case was the first of its kind. With no procedural rules to speak of. Delany just made it up as he went. Michigan had no game-plan around the loss of Mouton because no one could remember, mid-2009, the last time the Conference suspended a player, and certainly never like that.
But this week, the procedure was so clear (largely due to the stink over Mouton), and the result so obvious (a 1- or more-game supension of Gholston, at least) that even the Lansing sports reporters were asking Dantonio and Narduzzi how they were preparing ro the loss of one or more players. Answer from the Spartan coaches; they were not preparing. Um, okay.
I hear that sarcasm! There's no way Coach dip shit didn't see this coming. He knew the second he threw that punch that he would game planning for next Saturday minus his best defensive player. He may be an asshat but he's not stupid.

You get ahead or even next to this, and you can still spin this absurd moral high ground perspective. Res ipsa loquitor. The thing speaks for itself. Yet, no one attached to the situation felt the need to say anything other than a defense.
There is no defense for this. The entire nation has weighed in on this and has spoken as an embarrassing majority that this was egregious misconduct. Yet there are still those who apparently were "provoked" . . .

I am disappointed that Dantonio seemed to send a message that Gholston arm barring Lewan, late hitting Denard, Neck twisting Denard, Knee to the gut of Denard, Fist to the neck of Lewan was normal and acceptable....otherwise the "dean of discipline" would have stepped in and not let the inevitable happen through the hands of the conference office.
Per the Wall Street Journal: Personal Fouls in the UofM vs MSU series since Dantonio took over 4 to 1 MSU.
Coach No Tolerance looks the other way. The Big Ten++ misses multiple physical abusings and gives only a one game suspension. Chickenshits.
Michigan Resurgent? Michigan Resurgent!
The beatings will continue until the uniforms improve!
Somebody had to be the bigger person. Fortunately, many people are taller than Mark Dantonio, physically and otherwise.

Got what he deserved. And missing their biggest game of the year, enough for me.
Time to move on.

Are Wisconsin and Nebraska taking notes? Since the helmet twist and body slam of Denard and the arm bar of Lewan are considered A-OK by the B1G, should we expect Cousins to be subjected to one or more of those things in the upcoming weeks? We know that MSU would be just as screwed without Cousins as we are without Denard, and yet we did not resort to such tactics. I wonder if all of their remaining opponents will be quite as scrupulous with regard to MSU now that the lax precedent has been set.
"People who love sausage and respect the law should never watch either being made."
A just punishment:
Gholston - 3 games; one for each attempt to injure
Rush - 1 game for the McMahon body slam impersonation
Good. Hopefully they get blown the fuck out this weekend. Regardless of this suspension, he's still going to get thoroughly dominated next year and get to know the green turf at the Big House very well. He probably will think his name is Tom once we are done with him.
"what likely contributed to the incident.."
It's immaterial what "contributed" to the incident. If Tom threw a punch, he is accountable. For fun, let's assume Lewan throws a punch - and Tom throws one back - then BOTH players are accountable. But that doesn't appear to be the case - even if we extend the "two seconds of video."
It amazes me that MSU coaches, players, fans, ect. can come up with some of the most bullsh-t, ignorant, selfish excuses for Gholstons play and penalty. But I guess I shouldn't expect anything less from Mark "I hate Michigan to any extreme" Dantonio.
cheat, cheat, and cheat some more, and when you get caught, do the right thing, lie!
fucking pieces of shit. I hate them more than anything now because of this whole situation. Sick of hearing about them. Can't wait till Wisconsin tears "can't read and write" a new ahole.
We hate Michigan State. We don't like Penn State too. We don't care for Minnesota, Wisconsin or Notre Dame but we all hate O-S-U.
Michigan Blue 2008 block M hockey jersey still for sale for 50.00. FREE S/H
Should have been 2 games. Expect a good dose of Monte on that edge all game.
BBBBAAAWWAAAHHHAAAHHAAAHAAA!
Hopefully, Gholston will be a marked man for at least the rest of the season. My guess is that MSU will be back to their dirty ways next year when we play them again. It will be interesting to see if this trend continues or if it was reserved for us. The lack of dscipline by Danfonio is simply amazing. The crap will continue as long as he looks at winning as more important than integrity.
Boy, that response is really shameful. I can't even count the number of times, as a parent, I've said, "I don't care if he (insert excuse that blames other person here)." This is like parenting/teaching someone to be mature 101. I know I've beaten this dead horse along with everyone else but, SERIOUSLY, DANTONIO? You expect respect after OKing this?
I've been stunned by MSU's tone deafness this week but you guys should consider this almost like a gift. The negative implications to MSU will be so much deeper and far reaching than if they had handled this correctly by suspending him early and offering up the proper mea culpa. That program, and by extension, the university, is getting absolutely slaughtered over this. When MSU's scumbaggedry is a topic in New York Magazine, isn't that a type of win for Michigan?
We've been fighting with the occasional so-called "rational spartan" poster on our board, where outrage and negative sentiment toward MSU is virtually unanimous. It's pretty amazing that there isn't a single logical voice from the entire institution. At no point did anyone step up and recognize that the lack of accountability was not only troubling on an ethical level but also damaging from a PR standpoint. The official response to the suspensions is typically equivocal and full of lame justifications. I almost wonder who the hell is in charge there.
All MSU has done is give the rest of the country a reason to view them with disdain. It's almost like they set out to confirm their status as a second rate lowlife program. I don't know how an MSU fan will ever be able to argue equivalency again without being beaten back with this fiasco, and as someone with a few Sparty friends, that's a blessing indeed.
these days, it just sounds so much better coming from someone other than a Michigan fan.
On Wisconsin!
As a result of the issues we deal with, it's pretty normal to get personal with people and gloss over the obvious. For me, I do that by talking about sports. Most of the patients I see know that I am a Michigan nutjob. I am respectful towards the fans of other schools, but after the exam room door closes, the MIchigan fans hear how I really feel.
I can't tell you how many smiles I have created this week by simply saying:
"On Wisconsin."
"Coach, if you need one yard, I'll get you three yards. If you need five yards, I'll get you three yards." -Leroy Hoard
1) It's a minor issue at best in the MSM that will likely be forogtten in a week or 2.
2) Some people like the bad boy/ thug image and MSU can spin it as being tough and taking their lumps (penalties) during the game and still winning
3) MSU can also spin it as we protect our own by making Dantonio look like he cares for Gholston and wanted to keep him playing
I hope HS coaches see this and are disgusted and NFL players also see this and get pissed that somebody is playing dirty and may end somebody's career and their livelyhood. I think that's the major issue, but that's wishfull thinking on my part.
"They're stuck with that quarterback (sophomore Braxton Miller) for the next two or three years, that's fine with me. He throws worse than (Tim) Tebow. - Steve Everitt
But it's not that the MSM "forgets" the issue. They are complicit in protecting Dantonio's image (Dave Dye wrote a piece defending MSU just yesterday).
Unfortunately, no amount of thug behavior (on or off the field) will change the MSM tune until Dantonio starts losing. Winning is all that matters. So beat Sparty next year and the year after that, and so on and so on...
Coaches will bring this up with parents and HS coaches when recruiting. In the end, kids in solid homes and with good guidance will stay away from MSU, and MSU football will have even a higher percentage of thugs.
"Mattison must break you. Jake Ryan is his tool."
But that isn't the image Dantonio presents to parents during recruiting, and if they go all-in on that image it's going to change if not damage his recruiting base.
Friends of the family have a son playing at MSU. They thought--they probably still think--that they were sending their son to play for an upstanding Christian man offering no-nonsense discipline to his players. If they hadn't thought that, he would not have gone there.
Why don't you address what he said in his post instead of the same ol preverbal diahrea?
Actually you are the delusional one believing it is only Michigan alums here who think msu is pathetic in it response to this situation. There have been a number o msm articles written on it and all point to th pathetic character demonstrated by your player during the game an your coach and administration since the game. Dantonio us following in the footsteps of his hero tressel and he can do o because he has an equally foolish and classless administration as tressel had at osu.
so little time. I've been done with MSU, since we lost to them. Hopefully Wisky kicks their ass and we wont have to hear about them for a while.
It's tough being Blue in Columbus!!!

I think what we're seeing in a continuation of the OSU defense - deny, deny, deny. Take responsibility for nothing and force the "governing body" to make a move. MSU won with this one because they limited the discussion to one play. Hollis and the Dean of Discipline discuss only one play. The media is addressing only one play. Gholston only discusses one play.
How can a team be dirty if there was only one "regrettable" play? MSU got off as lightly as possible in this instance.
