The Gholston attack on Denard

Submitted by Indiana Blue on

I was at the game and could not see the attempt to break Denard's neck.  Just back home and this was the single worst behavior I have ever seen on a football field.  This was a deliberate attempt to injure a defenseless player that was on the ground.  This incident needs to be shown to EVERY coach in college football and then the B1G and the NCAA need to let Gholston know that he is permanently banned from playing college football.  The NFL would ban him for this behavior  -  intentionally attacking a defenseless player with the sole intent of injury (or worse) as Denard could have been permanently injured.

I pray that ESPN and B1G Network take the lead by showing the replay over and over so that every college football coach and fan knows exactly what Gholston did.

Yeah, its football. Its a tough game and you've gotta be tough to play it. But I'm sorry, call it sour grapes; call it being a sore loser, I don't give a damn. A 15 yard penalty doesn't teach Gholston anything that He can't get away with this crap. But it wasn't just him. It was late hit after late hit, unnecessary roughness after unnecessary roughness. The punches, the taunts... I know they were pumped up, but they were out of control. We all know "the warden" won't do anything about it, so the B1G should.

I see a lot of Sparty fans talking about how Lewan provoked that punch by Gholston, but did it ever occur to them that it was revenge for trying to rip off his teammate's head?

Part of me wishes Lewan got a better shot in than just rubbing his face in the dirt. No, I'm not going to sit up on my high horse and be totally happy that we let that happen. I understand that we still had a chance at this point in the game, but at some point you have to draw the line and see a guy blatantly trying to injure your friend and kick his ass. It turns into more than just a football game when a guy does something on purpose that could cause serious damage to an innocent person. Of couse, this is said now that I have hindsight, and I know I'll get backlash from some of the holier-than-thou members on this board, but both of those plays were total bullshit. I will not feel sorry for this man (no, he's not a kid) if anything bad happens to him at some point in the rest of his football career.

Does anyone think that the Spartan coaches did not encourage what took place today?  Something along the lines of "let's make Denard pay every time he touches the ball.  Be aggressive.  Don't worry about taking a personal foul (or five) -- let's knock this guy out of the game."  Hard to imagine that this was solely the individual efforts of the offending mouth-breathers.

I wonder if it would help if football had a rule similar to what baseball allows umpires to do if they suspect a pitcher has been ordered to headhunt. "Coach, the next player of yours gets a personal foul or unsportsmanlike penalty, you and the player are both ejected."

To me, it's really simple. The kind of violence that is acceptable in football, as opposed to real life, is,alloeable because the players are being provided some modicum of protection in the form of helmets, pads, etc. Not only that, but it's mutually understood that it's to be anticipated. Attempting to Linda Blair another person, whether a football player or an ordinary citizen, is reprehensible. The distinction lies with the fact that it is neither protected or accepted. The whole unnecessary roughness, "that's football" argument is wrong-headed and disgusting. It's not. In combination with the punch...he should not be playing football the rest of the year. Small price, in the real world, he'd be in jail. He'll get a game though. Dantonio'll keep that Pelican Bay pipeline going. But sorry, you need only look at the .gif- you know that boy wrong...

For anyone that has actually played football before.  Did Denard's neck/head actually turn all the way with the helmet? Or did the helmet kind of get turned sideways on his head, and his neck got twisted a little bit less than what it looked like.

Watching the gif up there really freaks me out.  His helmet turned about 120 degrees.

be disciplined, let's face the facts, nothing will happen.  He might miss a quarter or something, but Narduzzi said as much with the unnecessary roughness comment.  This is their super bowl, they will do anything to win.  Michigan wants to win also, but this game is not number one on the prioity list.

Until this game moves up higher on Michigan's prioity list, they will have the upperhand.

I really thought that MSU was going to get exposed during this game, and I am right to some extent. They have been exposed as bush league assholes with no class or dignity. Of course we knew this all along, but I think it has really been put out there for the world to see. I honestly think that's why my email, facebook page, and phones have been quite after this victory as opposed to the other three.

The thing that I really find deplorable is the fact the their ring leader likes to tout himself as some kind of holy rolling Christian, and a coach that does things the right way. Like I said in a previous thread, whatever helps you sleep at night bitch. He is nothing but a charlatan; much like his tragic "hero". He totally embraces the culture that produces this type of behavior, and for that he is nothing but a sorry piece of shit. Karma is a motherfucker, and after today, when it does come back, I will be cackling with glee.

I know it is frowned upon to wish harm on someone on this board, but after today, if Gholston suffers a career ending injury, I will make MANY  offerings and praises to the Blank Hating Gods. Fuck him, and fuck State.

Welcome to football, little sister. This isn't Minnesota. This isn't San Diego State. Those teams might put up with your dirty offensive line play, constant holds, and referee bias. But players like Rush and Gholston don't have to sit back and take it when your fatass 5 star busts try to push them down.

Welcome to the present and the future. This is only the beginning.

banned from college football and criminally prosecuted.  His late hit and attempt at breaking  Denard's neck is nothing short of criminal.  As a physician, I can definitively state that his actions could easily have left Denard paralyzed.

If the NCAA doesn't ban him from college football, it's a disgrace.

It will be interesting to see what the ESPN bloggers jump all over this one.  They sure threw Michigan under the bus last year when one of our players (I can recall which one) threw a punch and earned a one game suspension.  Here's hoping for equal treatment for once.

Gholston is going to flame out just like his cousin Vernon, no discipline. I don't know if they were explicitly told to go after Denard by any means necessary, but even if the coaches said to hit him it could imply some kind of understanding between coaches and players to take cheap shots or whatever. That's all speculation. Hoke should send this video to the Big Ten office and if Jim Delany doesn't lay down the law, then he really is a moron. Mouton was suspended a few years ago for punching someone, and that even close to this bad, but suspension was justified. I don't want some bull shit about Dantonio suspending him for one game. That's what a coach does if his player knees another player in the balls. It needs to come down from above him, above MSU.

From the way the helmet thing looked, Denard's head didn't actually move. The helmet just moved around on his head. But that is definitely not what Gholston was trying to do. When I saw that I was ready to go Miguel Cabrera on that dudes face.

I have not disliked any team more than Ohio ever and St has entered into the conversation now.  I knew that a loss would be hard for me to take but the manner in which they went about it...well lets just say that Hoke will have something to say about it after he does take a look at the film.

Some of the Gholston quotes that people have mentioned above are to be found in this YouTube video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n7OYRO7aiIY

There was one interesting one that I hadn't seen eleswhere.  At about 1:03 of the video, Gholston is asked about approaching Coach Hoke after the game; Gholston is asked what he said to Hoke.

And Gholston's answer is that he said, "Thanks, thanks Coach Hoke."  And then, seemingly realizing how ridiculous that sounded, he goes on to say that he was 'thanking' Hoke for 'turning around the Michigan program... like he has turned around every other program where he has been... Ball State and San Diego State... because [Gholston] likes the competition..."

Of course it's completely disingenuous.  I would love it if there were tape or audio of what he really said to Hoke and how he said it.  I'd expect it to be the verbal equivalent of what Gholston did to Denard.

It's rare, but probably not unprecedented, for players to taunt opposing coaches after a game.  And it makes you think about that scene after every big college football game where a sheriff's deputy (or a pair of them) accompany a coach across the field.  You've seen it; that weird bit of real life theatre in which a Washtenaw County Sheriff will be at Hoke's side, and an Ingham County Sheriff will be at Dantonio's side.  Or an Ohio state trooper will be at the OSU coach's side.  (Why the need for personal protection by an officer who is completelly outside his jurisdiction?  There are lots of Ann Arbor cops at Michigan games; why not one to protect the opposing coach?)

Anyway, back to the Gholston video; what a liar.  You have to see it to appreciate what a creepy thug he is.

I was at the game and when I finally got home watched the YouTube clip of Gholstons neck twist/punch.  They made my stomach drop, particularly his attempt to literally break Denard's neck.  I've been upset since yesterday and decided this morning to write a letter to Bill Carollo, the Big 10 Coordinator of Officials for football.

I must say I was pleased that Coach Hoke, Martin, Denard and others didn't say anything in the post-game presser about their dirty play.  That's the best thing to do, in my opinion--let the conference handle it.  It still makes me sick to my stomach, though.

Normally, I support the actions of the Cobra Kai, but this is some John Kreese-type shit to the next level.

I'm disappointed, but not surprised, with how dirty State played us.

I see us, for the immediate future, becoming more like Sparty.  That is to say, rooting for "anybody who plays MSU."

That would be different, from not much thinking about you guys unless and until we had to.

But if fans can make a small difference, by raising a big public stink about Gholston and Marcus Rush, and possibly causing the Big Ten to react with one-game suspensions for both of them on the week when you face Wisconsin, I think that's a great idea.  Any little thing that we can do to hurt you seems like useful fun to me.  Many stranger things have happened, than a public outcry affecting a suspension.

Anyway, there is of course now the mere mathematical motivation for us to want to see Wisconsin (Leaders) beat you (Legends).  But there will be real pleasure for me, if during our bye week, we might see your team get pounded.

lol, perfectly acceptable.  The only reason I came on here and "trolled" was to bring some sanity to the whole attempted murder bs.  I don't like stupid plays that hurt our team, and I don't like bulletin board material.  What Gholston did was stupid--both times.  I'll not defend him.  However, it was not an attempt to paralyze and certainly not to murder.  No one likes losing, and I understand UM has not had the years of experience that MSU has had in that department, and UM doesn't handle it as well.  I totally understand looking forward to MSU getting their butts kicked by Wiscy next weekend.  That's what rivalries are all about--it's great fun watching your rival getting blown up.

I normally love seing UM lose, but there's one game I'm cheering for you guys.  Please kick Nebraska's ass.  That team swaggered into the B1G as though they were the cat's ass.  I loved that Wiscy bitch slapped them.  Please do the same.

Now, please go back to hating me.  I understand.

And that is, it makes news on a week when GameDay is coming to E. Lansing.  And if there is a suspension, that forces the GameDay crew to cover it.  And run multiple replays of Gholston's late hit, plus the helmet-twisting.  It puts the whole nation on alert to one of your big negative stories of the year.  And talk about the guy who -- "did you see it?" -- piled on Denard Robinson and twisted his helmet.

Nobody is going to believe whatever Gholston says about it, either.  Reporters asked Gholston about his punch at Lewan, and specifically gave him an out; "Was he getting his hands in your face before then?"  Gholston said he'd have to look at the film.  He didn't say, "Yeah, Lewan held my facemask and I retaliated.  We both should have drawn penalties."

When he twisted denards neck I was sure he would be thrown out of the game. I take it the refs missed it? When he punched Lewan he definitely should have been tossed after his 2nd personal foul. Then after every tackle he made he layed on the ball carrier and taunted them. I think he needs to hear from the NCAA and needs to be suspended some games, especially after twisting denards neck.
