[George Campbell decommits]

Submitted by jasgoblue on

This is a rumor on another site (I have no access to premium content). Mods, please delete if I'm out of line, I don't want to violate the site rules and I really agree with Brian's thoughts on how we need to treat commits / recruits / kids.

With that said, rumor is that a big 2015 commit is waivering. We may need to brace ourselves for a decommit. Hopefully, Michigan fans will keep their collective cool and not lose their shit.

Edit: My info is from a free board. As a reminder, here is the MGoBlog policy on paywalled content:

You have to win f****ing football games. Top talent will not play for mediocre teams.Brady better right this damn ship quickly...Michigan has been one big lie since the Sugar Bowl. I dont blame the kids for jumping ship.

Look at texas versus texa a&m recruiting classes this year and tell me that winning doesn't matter.  Also Texas had a shot at the big 12 title game on the last game of the season, notre dame played in the national championship game last year, I'd love to be that mediocre.

Also not saying losing him is going to kill us, and obviously there are exceptions to every rule, but the teams who have two three years of strong recruiting and not just a flash in the pan couple of good years are the ones who win games.

Not saying I am optimistic that he is coming back, because I don't know how many 5* recruits we have ever had commit decommit and the commit again, but he must want to take his officials and I don't think the coaches will give up on him. Anybody know who his recruiter was?

Campbell decommitting is a bummer, and I hope he ends up playing for Michigan, but like Desmond said a few years ago: "Hey, if the kid wants to go, don't let the door hit you on the way out...I'm not going to deny his talents, but you ain't won nothing in Ann Arbor, son! Not so much we need to worry about if you're going to be here [in 2015] or not."

Nor magic recruit. Campbell is a talent and, should Michigan his be all and end all choice, it woult be great to see him in maize and blue. If he decides his future is better served elsewhere then he and the program are better for it.

Great programs are built and maintained by a consistent dedication to a philosophy. In the last 134 years, Michigan has had many great players and lost many great recruits. Programs lose high profile recruits every season. What matters is if the program is getting enough quality players who fit the system and its philosophy, to perform at an elite level. Then they must be coached to produce. The 2012-2014 classes demonstrate that Hoke is more than capable of recruiting at the required level. We'll know by 2015 about the coaching.

should be the rule here. Player development a card another school can play and will be played until elite talent can see Michigan can get them to the next level. Play on the field will be crucial if we want these 5 star chipper donning the maize & blue.

I believe a Mr. Dawson briefly left the train only to come back.  If Campbell likes Michigan so much to commit a couple years in advance, I'd think Michigan is still the standard and he'll judge those colleges and coaches next to Michigan.  Throw in a big win or two next year, he could come home once again.  Michigan is still quite in it.  His recruiter just needs to step up his game to reaffirm his previous position that Michigan is school for him.

people say they saw this coming. how? the guy was full on Blue, posted a picture to his Twitter hugging coach Hoke, called himself the Mayor of Ann Arbor. he certainly seemed pretty solid. his uncle/handler seemed to not be sold on Michigan initially and probably planted the bug in the ear months ago.

I'm not an "insider" so perhaps that is where people have heard rumblings of this as a possibility? But even then the rumors tend to trickle down to the common folk, and I don't recall hearing or reading anything about this prior to the actual announcement.

Unless there have been rumors that I just haven't heard, saying that this was inevitable just seems like a convenient way of brushing off the sting of losing a top recruit IMO.

Hopefully this is another d. Dawson situation and he comes back to the good guys in the end.

... Seems like there is another way to escape Bolivia other than to hire a MGoLawyer.

With today's melt-down, perhaps some on the board will need to consider layers and layers of intermediaries to negotiate thier own exits.  (Actaully, I think the board's reaction to the Campbell news has been pretty tame, for which I thank the points system.)

reconsiders. I think it is possible to love everything about Michigan and still not know if thats where you want to spend the next 4-5 years of your life....especially if you are from Florida.

I get it, i just hope he comes back to the fold.

I think everybody needs to take a step back and relax.  I honestly think if NSD for his class was today, he'd still be blue.  Just from what I'm hearing this isnt all his decision.  Nonetheless, this program needs to get back to doing what they built themselves on years ago.  Get kids who can play and win ball games.  Take a look at MSU.. yes, big brother as of late.. Dantonio just pulls kids who can play, without viewing rankings or national hype and find themselves playing for a B10 title nearly every year of the last 5 and they win ball games.  Campbell is an elite talent but if he changes his mind, you cannot freak out on him. He's a 17 year old kid.

Its one thing when your fellow recruit buddies start looking around and get in your ear.  Its another thing when family members do so as I think that carries some more weight.  I love Campbell's speed, I have some concerns about his hands.  I think he was here during ice cold and snow (which happens at times in Ann Arbor) and that may have changed a southerner's take on things.  As I've said before, if you think you're going to play post-college there are teams all over, what better way to prepare yourself than experiencing all 4 seasons.  Going from Florida State to the Pats would require a large investment in Under Armour!  I apologize for not paragraphing this but my Return key on Windows 8 is currently software-inop.

When does good news come? Ohio gets 3 top recruits in 2 weeks and Michigan possibly loses 2 committs. At least the Ohio recruits know where they wan't to be. Time to tell guys like Mcdowell crap or get of the pot he is hurting the class. If he wants to be a Michigan player and help the team he would commit and let others like Cambell and Harris see the positives. If I'm hoke and company not waiting around to watch him go to Ohio move on.

McDowell has made it known throughout the entire process that he planned on comitting at the all american game on national tv.  And why are we so worried about what Ohio State does? IF you dont remember, we had nearly a full class by the end of the summer for '14.. what more can you ask for man. Be patient, it will come. We need to focus on winning football games, not who OSU is recruiting.  If Malik wants to be here, like many say he does, than he will be come next fall, if not than so be damned.

May be Michigan will surprise us all and go 10-2  next season and FSU will trip up? Hope the coaching staff will still recruit him hard. Things are so fluid you never know what will happen. If he decides he does not want to play here, then best of luck to him where ever he ends up.
