[George Campbell decommits]

Submitted by jasgoblue on

This is a rumor on another site (I have no access to premium content). Mods, please delete if I'm out of line, I don't want to violate the site rules and I really agree with Brian's thoughts on how we need to treat commits / recruits / kids.

With that said, rumor is that a big 2015 commit is waivering. We may need to brace ourselves for a decommit. Hopefully, Michigan fans will keep their collective cool and not lose their shit.

Maybe these guys saw Borges interview at MLive. When asked about the offensive performance against OSU 'he pointed to one thing only.' PLAYER execution.  "Thats the difference. Nothing more, nothing less. Not game plan, not play calling. We executed."

His response to why the 2 point play was not changed after the timeout.  "next question"

Would you want to play for this guy?

Lack of execution can be found on every play of every game, and despite Space Coyotes continued insistence, on field product is a direct reflection of coaching.

He takes no responsibility for failure. I believe it has been made clear that  this Arrogant Ass is going to be here. Can you blame these young men for making it clear that they will not?

There are a lot of ways to soften a genuine belief in player failure.

For example:

"we have a lot of youth and inexperience on offense"

"these kids have been working their butts off and it is nice to see results which match their effort"

"I ask a lot of my offense and have at times expected too much"

None of this would change the fact that Borges is nothing more than a coat-tail OC. It would make his ineptitude more palatable.

Instead we get   " MY PLAYS ARE PERFECT EVERY TIME"   failure is your fault

Like him or dislike him ... but he is, indeed, arrogant as hell. It's also odd that he points the finger at players all the time, because Mattison goes out of his way to do the opposite, and Hoke only points when somebody truly deserves it. Borges's coaching values and beliefs don't really align with the other key members of the staff (IMO).

Flash in a pan success, followed by a couple mediocre-at-best seasons ... resulting in a huge decommitment and a huge miss on an alleged "lock". We are ND!? Say it ain't so...

Thats unfortunate. Hope he decides to become a Wolverine when it counts on signing day.

I seem to remember a quote from Wilton about Peppers just wanting to enjoy some free pampering on other official visits. Tried to find it but anyway, point being, I think most top level recruits love the attention untill the process starts to get to them. George is a top 10 recruit over a year away from signing day. I think more than anything this is a chance for him to take visits regardless of if he thinks he will go there, due in large part to Hoke's visit policy.

I agree with the policy though, I think it does more good than harm. I just think this is an example of a pitfall in the plan.

Go Blue. Enjoy your summer and senior year George. We will be here ready to welcome you back after youve visited some other schools and realised they dont compare.

George Campbell is a good player but we'll be fine.  We have game changing WRs in the 2014 class, and with such few numbers in the '15 class we can go hard for the WRs we really like and though they might not be George Campbell they won't be far behind.  We have a historic program with great academics that loves to throw the ball.  Some very good WRs will want on board with that.

I didn't say I was happy about it.  But this stings less than Da'Shawn Hand by a long shot, and certainly less than Treadwell from last year.  Not only is Treadwell a much better receiver than Campbell, but he was in a class we desperately needed instant-impact WRs.  Campbell is not.  Even if he ends up back in the class, he might not play for a bit.  Treadwell was the best WR on a solid team as a true frosh, a team that had other experienced WRs.

Again - I'm not doing the "we didn't want him anyway" dance.  I would still love him in our class.  But this is not a position of need, it's not late in the recruiting cycle when we don't have time to get a good replacement, and although I'm sold that Campbell is a great athlete, he hasn't yet shown to be an elite WR, so I'm not going to cry about it.

Having a "Historic" program is great. It does seem that "Modern" relevance is becoming an increasing problem. Rutgers played in the first college football game (Wikipedia ?) so I guess they are a "Historic" program as well. When we start to play them we will be even more "Historic". Those games should really improve our recruiting profile.

You seem very confident in these "game changing" 2014 WRs. Green and Smith were supposed to be game changing 2013 RBs. I certainly wouldn't mind if a 5-star 2014 RB was walking through the door this upcoming year just in case, because they didn't exactly shock the world in year 1. I'm not trying to be a dick, but maybe we should wait until gameday to decide whether or not we are fully stocked at WR. Until then, we won't know how big of a loss Campbell is/was/could-be.

robmorren2

December 18th, 2013 at 10:48 AM ^

I'm not counting out either of them, but it'd be nice to have a 5-star RB coming in a year behind them just in case. That's how you build a program -- with depth. There's no way to sugarcoat the loss of a top-10 player.

....regardless of ranking, stars, transfer or injury. But I want kids at MICHIGAN that want to be at MICHIGAN. AD and JC weren't that highly touted but JC has been a ST beast and AD showed a lot of promise prior to injury. Those who stay. GO BLUE!

Exactly. It's been proven time and again that it's not about the recruiting stars in the Big 10, it's about developing talent into hard nosed and resilient football players. I know, I know, it sounds like I'm just trying to cheer myself and the rest of us up, but it's true. Campbell is a loss if we don't end up with him, but let's just hope Hoke and Co. get guys who have talent and want to be there working hard every day. The rest will work itself out.

I'm not going to get my panties in a bunch over a 2015 kid. You know how we have very little control in games? We have even less control over recruits. At least in games we can scream all we want. As others have said Hoke needs to figure things out next year. I think he'll get until 2015, fairly, but he's got to put his head together with Borges and figure what will work and start using the talent he's been getting these past couple of years.

To everyone saying "6'3" guys who run a 4.37 40 don't grow on trees" I have something for you to chew on.

You know who esle fits that mold almost to a T?  Josh Furman. 6'3", ran a sub-4.4 40 a number of times, and even put up crazy stats in high school.  Now he can't find a spot on the team.  Not every guy who is an elite athlete turns out to be an elite college football player.  George Campbell has certainly proven to an incredible athlete, but whether he's an incredible football player hasn't really been proven yet.

I'm not saying this to suggest we don't want him (because we still do).  But if you compare him with Peppers or Damien Harris and it's not really close, at least in my opinion.

Victor Valiant

Judging by Campbell's stats you might have a point, but I'm under the impression from everything I've read that he's a once in a generation type athlete. I'm fine with trying to cheer ourselves up by saying he's unproven, but almost every recruit is. Top high school wide receivers are notorious for having misleading numbers. Some guys will have huge numbers but be borderline 3-stars because they play in an offense conducive to that. Some, like Campbell, might have lesser numbers but get fewer targets. I'm not sure which one he is. Comparing him to Furman is a bit of stretch. Furman was a 3-star recruit for a reason. Campbell is a 5-star and Top 10 guy for a reason.

Good luck to get kid. Hope he picks Michigan.

Just indicted the coaching staff for not putting a gifted player in a position to succeed. In high school he had over 2,000 yards rushing, yet they kept him at safety, where he just couldn't "figure it out", while the team failed to run the ball. Yes, I understand the culpability of the Offensive line in this, but why not try such a gifted athelete at his "natural" position in order to make the team better? The Team,The Team, The Team.

WolvinLA2

Probably because we needed him at safety more than we needed him at RB.  He came in one year after Fitz, and though we haven't had a ton of star RBs in that time, I don't think Furman would have been above third string or so at any point.

He actually started a few games at safety this year, something he likely never would have done at RB.  Just because a player doesn't end up being a star doesn't mean the coaches screwed it up.

We'll never know, one way or the other. I do know that he really did not contribute as a safety in a positive way, but may have helped out at running back when we couldn't run the ball. It is just my opinion, but it seemed that the coaches liked Fitz, felt sorry for him, liked how hard he worked to get back pn the field, and gave him every opportunity to fail, even at the expense of the team winning.

All rumors are credible until they are proven not to be factual.  Then they stop being rumors and start becoming innuendo.   I think we should just skip to innuendo.

I think that Brady Hoke is going to play Santa at the Somerset Mall on Saturday.  Tom Beaver has reported it but I can't give you the full details because it is behind a paywal;.

Isn't this kind of fun WolvinLA2 - you should try it.

Damien Harris isn't decommitting.  He is a kid that if he decommitted, he already would have.  He put up nintendo numbers this year and every program will be beating down his door.  And if he did we would probably offer Mike Weber in two seconds anyway.  The truth is recruits come and go - they truly do.   George Campbell I'm sure is a good kid and he will be a good football player but players are rarely....RARELY...Jameis Winston or Johnny Football.  If we had a once in a generation QB recruit that decommitted, that would make me apopleptic because that is the type of player who can win you a national championship by themselves.  But you can game plan to take away a wide receiver or to take away a running back.

More importantly who knows what George Campbell may become.  He could be Calvin Johnson or he could be Ricardo Miller.   Remember Ricardo Miller was one of the top recruits in Florida and a borderline five star.   When you are predicting this far ahead you don't really know what you are predicting.  If he wants to come to Michigan he will and if he doesn't he won't.  The sky isn't falling, the world won't end, a high school kid chose to look at other options.   Even Randy Moss couldn't help Marshall win a national championship or Calvin Johnson help GT win a national championship.  A WR or a RB doesn't win national championships.  World Class defenses and offensive lines that help you run the ball win championships.  Are there any big time defensive players decommiting?  No?  Then cool - call me when 2015 arrives.

If you don't think elite wr's can make or break a team you haven't been watching fsu play a lot lately.  Our wr's struggled to get seperation this year and that coupled with gardner having accuracy issues led to to a lot of picks, your qb has a larger margin for error when you have your guy beat by 5 yards, its a huge difference.

Of course its always possible one of the guys we already have turns into an elite wr's, but I'm just saying the skill of your wr's has about as big of an impact on your quarterbacks performance and offense in general as can be had.

I would not be surprised if his girlfriend has something to do with this. He seems very close to her and may not want to be so far away from her. If this is the case I understand, however I think it's a terrible mistake. As someone who can directly relate to a scenario like this I can say the last thing he should be worrying about is his girlfriend. Unfourtanatly he probably can't see that.

I apologize if you're in school with him or one of his actual friends, but I'm guessing you're not. Why don't we let those that are give him girlfriend advice and we'll stick to watching from a distance.

FYI, that distance should be far enough away that you have no clue about the status of his personal relationships that have nothing to do with college football or recruiting.

Not surprised at all by this.  Let's see-- 5 star talent, from Florida, 2015 class, FSU in NC game, 100's of offers.  We should be thankful we had his commitment for a while. Hopefully he is happy with his final decision. (And please, not the Gators, all my in-laws went there, could make for a rough Christmas dinner for me).
