[George Campbell decommits]

Submitted by jasgoblue on

This is a rumor on another site (I have no access to premium content). Mods, please delete if I'm out of line, I don't want to violate the site rules and I really agree with Brian's thoughts on how we need to treat commits / recruits / kids.

With that said, rumor is that a big 2015 commit is waivering. We may need to brace ourselves for a decommit. Hopefully, Michigan fans will keep their collective cool and not lose their shit.

Also some of the recruiting guys on Twitter, linked below.

Speight said something to him the other day on Twitter about leaving their "group chat" and he never responded. They always talk back and forth, so I figured something was going on with the no response.

Here in Colorado we prefer to smoke something else.  Numbs the pain a little better.

Actually I don't think this is as terrible of news as some might think.  Rather have it happen now than later, so M can focus on other WR targets.  Mason Cole and other Michigan committs will stay in his ear.  Also he mentioned the family atmosphere at Michigan as a big draw, and maybe after seeing some other programs, that is what brings him back.  (somebody post that picture of him with Hoke when he committed).

Not overly worried, but that could be the doob talkin'.

He did. This is michigan football, fergodsakes! What is the o/u on how many days Harris stays committed right now? 7-5(6) football teams without national relevance in basically a decade should not expect to run with the big boys regularly. Win some games and then it will take care of itself. Color me completely sick of recruiting at this point. I don't care who comes, why they come, or how many stars they have. As long as they are good people, love Michigan, and can help us win some damn games I'm happy.

Is the negativity around here. I already knew someone was going to write what you did when I seen the thread. Every time someting not so positive with a recruit comes up it all goes back to Michigan's record. Let's get a little more creative next time!

perhaps that is because the two might be related?  Perhaps recruits care about playing for teams that might have actual on-field success.  If you want the gist of my initial post, it was essentially that until we show progress on the field we should expect to be disappointed in the recruiting game.  Like it or not, Michigan's record is highly relevant.  It isn't negativity, it is truth.

Are you seriously trying to insinuate that a teams on-field performance has nothing to do with recruiting? If that's the case I have to wonder about you. Sure teams with poor records will still pick up recruits, just like teams with good records will.

There are kids who are lifelong fans of a specific university and will go to that university regardless how well or poorly that team performs. Other recruits will choose a school because it is the best school that offered them but because of their abilities they missed out on the top notch schools. At the end of the day there is more than enough bodies to fill a university football team roster.

The problem is UM wants to have the best of the best. We don't want just the guys who are lifeling fans or those who missed out on offers from the "big boys", we want the top talent in the country. When your team is performing the way UM has over the past decade most of those guys are going to look elsewhere because their goals are winning and making the NFL. If your teams doesn't do that, they aren't going to come.

We were 11-2 it was "Hoke can't close" on the big recruits that is. Now its our record. I never said record doesn't play some kind of affect. But more like there is always an excuse for missing out on recruits. I'm sure next year it'll be something different.

I'm not normally one to bash a high school kid for changing his mind, but Jesus man they have to stop saying shit like this...

I'm going to stick with it. I was taught to stay with my commitment, and that's something I'm going to do -- no matter what -- with Michigan.

I'm 100 percent with it, and no one has to worry about me flopping to a different school at all.

Three months ago he said that.

In August we had yet to start the season and many people here (and across the country) thought we were going to be a solid team. Lots has changed since then. I recall reading numerous threads about people who consider themselves fans of UM who were pretty much hanging it up after the PSU loss, then again after the Iowa loss and multiple times since.

If adults who have rooted for this team for decades (in many cases) were at that point during the season how can you be surprised that a kid of 17 has had a change of heart regarding how he felt about the UM football program after the season we all witnessed? Give the kid a break.

If I were a kid with his potential and had the opportunity to go anywhere I wanted to play football and a very good chance of one day making the NFL (if I had the right coaching and development) I would find it hard to go to UM at this moment. On the offensive side of the ball this staff has shown absolutely no ability to develop the talent they have and that has to play on a kids mind when making a decision of this magnitude. If he choses wrong it could be the difference between making millions of dollars and setting his family up for generations or being just another guy who struggles to make ends meet his whole life.

We have to accept that just because we all love the U of M doesn't mean everyone feels that way. If you're an aspiring engineer than sure, U of M is probably a no brainer, but for a guy aspiring to be a pro football player I can certainly see why they would look elsewhere given the state of things here.

"No matter what." I'm usually with you when a kid changes his mind. I'm just saying they need to stop saying these kinds of quotes because it's to the point where it's impossible to take any of it seriously. If he hadn't said that I'd be right there in the "ah, bummer. Well good luck to him" crowd.

The on field play this season demonstrates that this meme " On the offensive side of the ball this staff has shown absolutely no ability to develop the talent..." is at best a matter of overly emotional opinion and if subjected to rational analysis is simply untrue.

In many comments, knowledgeable people with coaching and playing experience, have given many examples of progress throughout the entire offense. Gardner has improved, the TEs have improved, blocking across the offense has improved, with improved blocking the RB play has improved. Lewan has stated that Funk is the best Oline coach he's ever encountered. Yes his sample size is small but his opinion is more informed than any of ours. While there was not enough improvement to avoid a 7-5 season, the improvement has been very real.

A debate on whether or not the amount of improvement falls short of reasonable expectations for this team at this time would probably be interesting. To simply repeat this meme adnauseium, merely gives aid and comfort to our opponents, and causes more negativity among us.

Others have pointed out that the recruits read this site. It is a fair argument that the bitching of one poster or commentor probably doesn't have an impact. When we have hundreds of comments that denigrate the coaches both as professionals and people it does set a tone that can't help recruiting.

I wonder if he notified M's staff of this prior to the recruiting dead period. If not, the timing is quite cowardly.
