Garnett, Diamond, Reeves, Kozan, Grant - any others a possibility?

Submitted by StephenRKass on

This post is to collect some of the info out there on remaining prospects, posted by Ace two days ago, and also from Scout and the board and other sources. The consensus is that we are still in it for:

  • Garnett  (Michigan, Stanford) decision:  today, Jan. 26
  • Diamond (Michigan, Arkansas) decision:  Feb. 3
  • Reeves (Michigan, Ohio State) decision:  TBD
  • Kozan (Michigan, Iowa, Auburn) decision:  after Hoke's visit this Friday, edit: 1/27.)
  • Grant (Michigan, Arkansas, Oklahoma)  decision:  TBD

Given that Stacey decommitted and is going to Cincinnati, we have exactly five spots left. From Aqua, I gather that Garnett literally didn't know whether he would go to Stanford or Michigan as of last night. According to Ace, Diamond maintains no leader, but yesterday, an inside poster vetted by Brian suggested that Michigan has maintained a slight lead all year long for Diamond. I have seen no leader given for the others.

Of course, it would be tremendous if all five came to Michigan. I suppose the probability is low, but one can always hope.

A few questions:

  1. Is there anything missing above (i.e., decision dates, or a clear source indicating that things are leaning blue (or otherwise) for any of them? I also wonder if any are waiting for the shoe to drop with others before they pull the trigger. My suspicion is that they are all good enough, they aren't making a decision based on what anyone else does.
  2. Are there any other prospects I've missed? For example, could Gregory receive an offer if one of the others goes elsewhere? FTR, I'm assuming from Ace & Scout that the ship has sailed for Dodson, Madaris, & Diggs. (BTW, what happened with Diggs? I don't remember.)
  3. I know that Hoke is visiting Kozan, and that he visited Garnett, and that Mattison visited Reeves Tuedsday. Are there any more visits planned, beyond Kozan?

Regarding the remaining recruits, I really want all of them for Michigan, and can't choose between them. Can you? Garnett, Diamond, and Reeves are all highly skilled, and could make an impact soon. (What an OL class!!! Best ever?) And Kozan & Grant are both in positions of significant need, even though they're not rated as highly. Michigan already has a very good class. May these five put the cherry on top and set us up well for the future.

I sincerely doubt that we'll get 5 more kids in this class.  It's more likely that we bank 1 or 2 for next year.

I actually wouldn't mind if Michigan offered Gregory, because I think Michigan should have another scholarship QB on the roster...but I'm not expecting it.

But I don't think Gregory is the one, I was never that high on him.  The problem was not recruiting a larger number of QBs to begin with.  I think Michigan could have been in play for some other "back-up plan" QBs to bring in.

Fuller on the other hand would be a great pick-up in my mind, particularly as he seems to be a better athlete and could be moved around.

Also, note that Gregory has an offer from Purdue and according to rivals is "High" on them.  I think he's Arkansas bound, but I guess you could say if he's Purdue bound now and we offer then he'll be Michigan bound shortly after.

I'll be honest, I haven't seen him play...I'm going off the fact Rich Rod was interested in him early. To me we can sit here and say what we want about Rich Rod, but he knew how to find a QB to run his offense.

I think Gregory would be just fine in spot-duty at QB and a converted WR. But to each his own, you probably know a lot more about the kid than I do.

I've been holding out hope that there will be one "from left field" LOI next week.....but I just don't see it.  It seems like every year there is one and we all know that the phone calls are being made down to the last few minutes so there is a chance.  I really had hopes for a Diggs type caliber of player to move our way.  I would think a talented offensive skill player would look at what we are building and see the opportunity to shine (anyone want to wear #1 or #21??????).  However, if we end up with another 5* line man to add to the mix (or two!) that should really play well with the premier running backs and play makers next year.  Besides....we still have another year of #16!!

visitng another school when Michigan coaches came calling.  It has sounded like they would take all 5 if all 5 were to committ.  With Stacey leaving Kozan would fill the Center void that his depature made.  And Diamon and Garnett are too good to not take both.  Reeves and Grant are both sorely need especailly Grant because we need those Tight Ends

in light of Schiano's potential departure from Rutgers see below (albeit, I am not sure how realistic any of these guys is):

Pennsylvania OT J.J. Denman - Denman just committed to Rutgers a couple days ago after previously being committed to Penn State and Wisconsin.

New Jersey DE Darius Hamilton - Hamilton is not committed to Rutgers, but lots of recruiting gurus thoght it was only a matter of time before Hamilton became a Scarlet Knight.  He reportedly wanted to stay close to home and stick with his high school teammates.

Pennsylvania OT Chris Muller - Muller was rethinking his Rutgers commitment in recent weeks and might consider changing his allegiance.

Denman is more likely to go to Columbus than to visit us.

Muller I have no idea about.

Hamilton is  probably a Florida lock now.

I don't know...there always could be something out of left field, but who can predict that?

My guesses, and there are only guesses:  we get Diamond and Garnett, don't get Reeves or Kozan. And even on Reeves, I go back and forth daily, or hourly.

Diamond, I am not so sure about. Arkansas has made a very strong impression on him, based on all the reports, so we'll see.

As for Reeves, he is on the fence. Damn you Urban. If not for Meyer, he would have committed to Hoke/Mattison Co. already. I still think he can go either way. He was higher on Michigan from the get-go, and we have one of the best, if not the best, DC in the country. Plus, academically, Michigan is way ahead of THE OSU and I know academics matter to Reeves, and furthermore, I think he would get a better crack at starting early at Michigan than at OSU (given that they have CBs in waiting).

Kozan, yeah, we may be a 2nd/3rd option for him.

I am curious where we stand with Sam Grant. I hope Kyle Kalis is doing a bit of campaigning on our behalf.

Reeves made a comment on twitter last night about academics being a major part of his recruitment, or something of that nature. That should put Michigan in the lead if that is the case. I think we get either Garnett or Diamond, not both. Not sure about Kozan. I think Grant is a Michigan lean. So I would say we at least get 3 out of the 5 with maybe a "left field" commit.

Yea, those comments show that Reeves cares a lot about education.  In most cases, that would give Michigan a significant advantage over OSU - but the caveat in this situation is that OSU has the exact major that Reeves wants and Michigan does not.  So it could end up being a wash.  Either way - it seems like Reeves is a good kid and either school would be lucky to get him.

Hamilton especially would be a huge get. How could you not make room for him? Although, with Ojemudia, Strobel, Godin, and even Wormley, that's a lot of guys at DE. Still, you have to make room.

Denman, I don't know. I'd rather have Diamond. I don't think you push out Bars to make room for Denman either. I guess it depends on Diamond (and to a lesser degree, Garnett & Kozan.)

I will say, it is great that we have room for five more. This gives great flexibility, and if we end up banking one or two, that's just fine. At this point, it is better to have guys the coaching staff really wants, rather than settling for second best.

A last minute pull from a Rutgers commit too? None of them seem like instant thoughts for us to jump in on, but you never know if the coaches might have something up their sleeve.

Michigan doesn't get the O-lineman they want out of the Final 5.  They might offer instate kid Dan Gibbs as a project.   He has a walk on offer right now.

Either way the decision by Garnett tonight at 6:00 will effect the way the rest of the class fills out.

  • Grant could announce tonight, tomorrow, this weekend...it should be right after his visit with Hoke
  • Reeves may be announcing on Saturday is the rumor
  • Garnett seems to be 50/50, Grant seems to be 51/49, Reeves, 50/50, Kozan 35/35/30, Diamond 51/49 (Michigan always being the first number)
  • Nope. That's been me think Gregory should get an offer, but I'm just thinking out loud and suggesting it wouldn't be a wasted offer. However, it seems to be only these 5, Dodson, Madaris and Diggs are OUT.
  • He's always visited AJ Williams and Ondre Pipkins...I believe we're getting ready to be in a "dead period" where he can't make anymore visits. Recruits can contact him, but he can't contact anyone.

As far as the 5...we're not getting all 5, at least not IMO.

I'm hoping for: Garnett and Grant today...then Reeves on Saturday. Then if Kozan says "yes," I think Diamond is out...if he goes to Iowa or Auburn, I think we'll land Diamond.

Arkansas did just sign a 5th WR today... some highly sought after JC prospect.

While I understand that they would still take DGB in a heartbeat, might this suggest they aren't too keen on their odds?  Afterall, the SEC is now allowing a limited number of recruits... 6 WR in a single class?

DGB could always take another visit.  Reel him in Pee-Wee!

kind of off topic, but Brady Hoke must have been paying a visit to a recruit in Cincinnati yesterday (Bolden, Williams, or Madaris maybe) because I met him at a bar/restaurant.  Very nice guy!!! Every bit as genuine and personable as all these recruits and their parents are saying.

Not only do I think we will get all five, but I think there will be some current player attrition, of maybe one or two, from the current roster, before the spring game.

So, a class of 28.

Grant, Garnett, Reeves, Kozan, Diamond

and FWIW I think Kozan will be the best of the five.
