Garnett to decide on Jan. 26

It's an Insider article, but the thread title basically says it all.  And yes, we're in his top three, along with Stanford and Notre Dame.

If he chose ND, but I've been surprised before.  I think it's down to us and Stanford.  Hopefully Magnuson has been working his charm on him over the last few months and it carries over into a commitment.  Be interesting to see how the recruiting plays out too with Diamond and Kozan assuming Garnett commits.  Now that Wright seems to be off the board, I suppose it's possible they take two more OL.

Maybe not make or break but how could you argue with an OL with guys like Braden, Bars, Kalis, Stacey, Magnuson and Garnett. That is one solid OL haul that would contribute over the next several years. I like our chances with Garnett but after reading that Insider piece, it makes me a little less confidant.

Did anyone catch that Magnusson tweeted (re-tweeted by sources I don't follow kids) that Coach Hoke was coming over to his house this week?  I wonder if that has something to do with Garnett as Mags is rock solid and it's not like he lives down the road.  Oh well either way I am glad kids like this exist, hardwork, smart, take their choices seriously and value education.

On an unrelated note interview with Chaka Daley on WTKA was tremendous. Seems like a quality guy, in the Belien, Hoke, Red vein who will take the soccer program places.  DB is 2 for 2 (3 for 3 if you count re-upping with Belien).

One thing that I love about Garnett's final list is that really backs up what he's always said in terms of academics being important.   Academically, you can't go wrong with any of his finalists.   It always a little frustrating to hear a kid talk about the importance of academics and then end up somewhere like Alabama.

I have no idea why everyone blathers on about NDs academics. I've seen them listed high on certain college-ratings charts. Honestly, though, I think that's deceiving. ND is a private university and so doesn't have to accomodate all sort of students the way state universities do. It's like USC, another school that gets rated fairly high despite being a mediocre school. ND is not a world-class instition. You don't see non-football kids choosing between M, Cal, and ND. I've lived and worked on both sides of the country and I've seriously never even met an ND grad.

I actually agree that those rankings systematically underrate public universities, but there's no denying that ND is a very good school. I do know people who chose between Michigan and ND, and academically, you can't go wrong with either one.

I knew 3 people that went to ND and I grew up in Eastern PA.  2 were class valedictorians and the other was an amazing student, all non sport related.  They all thoroughly enjoyed their time there and thought highly of the eduction they received.  Is there anything else you see that makes them a mediocre school?

Nah - I went to a "prestigious" professional school in the midwest and there were about 8 UM grads in my class and about 4 or 5 ND grads - the ND grads I met were all very capable and near the top of the class. It's a world class school, if not in the exact same way as UM.

I hear you. And I didn't mean to imply that I think it's a bad school. I'm sure it's a perfectly good one. But I think it's reputation as a school, like the reputation of its football team, is oversold. Put another way: I don't think we'd ever hear much about the school were it not for its football tradition.

Your opinion of ND's as an academic institution is off base. Lets just move on now.

Josh, please Go BLUE!  We need you in a Maize and Blue uniform.  Stanford is a good school, that's not in question, but as for the direction of the football team....

If there's one thing I've learned about Stanford in the past few years, is that Jim Harbaugh is one heck of a coach and recruiter.  Even though Harbaugh has not been my favorite person the last several years, he essentially built the Stanford team to what it is now, but losing him and Luck, Stanford will go back to being a nice academic institution with a mediocre football program.  The outlook for Michigan's "stock" is looking MUCH MORE Bullish than for Stanford's "stock".  Even if I take off the homer glasses, that's very plain to see.

Josh cannot go wrong with either of his top 3 schools  but i hope he chooses the university that represents the leaders and the best.
