I went back for a road game in Columbus in 2009 when they played USC.  It was maybe 10:30 in the morning and a bunch of the students in Eddie George's bar were already high school hammered.  Wearing FUSC shirts they spent the time and money to create.  Clever.

I sat at a table with a group of Buckeye fans who were bagging on Michigan.  Then I said, "Yeah, but if your kid got into Michigan, how fast would you write that tuition check?"

No one argued.

What a loser school and a loser degree...

lol.

-Ohio State saw a more than 24 percent increase in freshman applications this year, with a record 35,475 total applications. That’s a 65 percent increase over five years ago.

-About 28 percent of the incoming freshman class will be from outside Ohio.

-The average ACT composite score increased to 28.5 from 28.1 last fall.

Like it or not, Ohio State is on the way up, and gaining momentum.  30 years ago you could probably rag on them, not anymore.

Quoting an article that reports that applications are up at OSU does not refute the previous posters point unless you can show that those applicants are choosing Ohio over Michigan, which, of course, you can't.  Composite ACT scores for incoming freshmand for THIS YEAR are up 0.4 points?  Congratulations, you're still in the bottom half of the Big Ten, just keeping ahead of MSU, Iowa, and Indiana.  A big point of the article is to show that OSU is making a big push to attract out of state students with lots of flashy perks like new dorms and stipends for abroad study, but then we know how Ohio likes to throw around extra perks to the student body.

So yeah, nice try, but there's still plenty of reasons that Michigan is able to rag on Ohio, sorry to disappoint you.

The story outlines Gardner's time at Michigan and his feelings about not beating out Denard for the starting job at quarterback early on. And some of that, was new to me, the details concerning his talks with Hoke and how deeply upset he really was not playing.

Now, why the Columbus Dispatch ran this story a week before the season starts indicates that the Buckeyes are a little leery of this kid and his confidence going into the season. And they should be because Gardner is very good. And he will prove it this year.

The story is fairly even-handed and balanced.

To say that Gardner is a better fit for Brady Hoke's pro-style preference is simply stating the obvious.  That's not a slam on Denard.

I read this article as really more a way to stir up excitement about the upcoming season.  OSU's chief rival has a QB that's getting a lot of press ... so they profile Gardner as part of their ramp up of Buckeye coverage.  As I said, a decent article; nothing groundbreaking, nothing hostile.

(There's a fair amount of similarity between Miller and Gardner ... both are athletic, smart and go about their business with quiet leadership.  I don't like OSU, but I find it hard to stir up much dislike for Miller.)

That article contains 43 sentences. It's broken into 28(!) paragraphs, for an average paragraph length of ~1.54 sentences. Modern journalism is terrible.

There isn't any OSU "homerism" here.  This wouldn't look out of place on a national website.  I especially liked the way the mentioned that Devin graduated in three and one-half years.  Definitely worthy of a posbang...

...who is one of the best writers in the Conference.  Todd Jones is a senior reporter.  All things considered, the Dispatch is among the very best CFB-covering papers in the midwest.  They beat the shit out of the Detroit Free Press, that is for sure.

So, uh, Devin Gardner thought about transferring in 2010 (as a freshman?!?) and 2011?  But not in the spring of 2012 when they started thinking of making him into a WR?  Isn't that kind of weird?

If you were stuck on a deserted island and could only have one newspaper magically drop from the sky once a week, and it had to be either the UM-focused Freep or the OSU-focused Dispatch, which would you pick?

But seriously, the whole Gardner to WR is one of the more perplexing episodes in recent UM football. I am not sure what we can take from it other than there was a real miscue in judging the readiness of what's-his-face (blocked it out) to be #2. Or to not take a #2 on the field.

On a desrted island, you need to catch fish for food, right?  And you could use newsprint to start a campfire, right?

There's two good uses for the Freep right there.  Fish-wrap, and fire-starter.  I might actually want to read the Dispatch, and that could be a problem.

It makes perfect sense. It just bit us in the (Jake) butt last year. Take a very talented but disgruntled non-starter and give him a chance to play now, while leaving the future open for his true position.

Listening to Sam Webb over the summer it seems that there would have been a team mutiny (exaggeration) if Denard would have been displaced or relegated as QB - particularly given his loyalty to team over self by not leaving when Hoke came in. In Sam-speak - "DG admits he wasn't quite ready to lead last year" and "Really proved a lot to his teammates in terms of leadership by taking on the role of receiver to help the team."

You address the DG to WR move in light of Denard. Ok, it all seems logical. BUt there's another major element. You dont address the major missfire in assuming Bellomy could take the reigns in the very foreseeable event that Denard would get injured, if just for a series or two. So DG was not ready...but Bellomy was? I know this seems like hindsight bias, but as bad as Bellomy played, to think that there weren't some signs seems unlikely.

It's a whatever article, but at least the slant is limited.

I can't wait for games to actually start so that everyone can focus on the field and not just try to fill a couple of inches of print each week.
