if he knows the playbook as well as he says he does then he could be a valuable asset to this team regardless of whether he's a freshman or not. Im not saying he should start or will start but i think he can contribute. Which leads me to believe he wont be redshirted as is suggest in a below post

Also, we heard over and over from those who attended the scrimmage how special he is, not how special he "could/will be", and that he might end up being our best option at QB ... lends me to believe against the red-shirt.

Denard is eating more than Gardner.

If this link says he isn't going to RS then I missed it.  What we have seen Gardner do poorly (granted it's only a fraction of what RR and crew have seen in practice) is fumble his first ever snap in the big house and throw two ill advised INTs.  What we have seen him do well...I can't say DR or TF can't do it better at this point.

I didn't know they were roomies...that was news to me.

to justify giving up the red shirt...he needs to show he can make a marked difference over the alternatives.  Putting DG in puts TF and DR on the sidelines (with no added red shirt upside.)

Like many have said, he is the combination between Denard and Tate plus he has excellent size. I really like to red-shirt him, but if he is good enough to win us ball games already, then put him in.  It is great to have 3 good QB's and I love having depth at that position unlike we did in 08.

...has a Hagerup post.

You’ve been spoiled for the past four years with Zoltan and you know it.  Enter Will Hagerup.  I got a glimpse of this kid’s leg recently and he can really hit it.   The kicking duties are up in the air but I think this guy will jump right in on Sept 4.  I ran over to chat with him today...

Hagerup is apparently a well mannered young man:

MVictors Also spoke with frosh punting phenom Will Hagerup, good kid, called me "sir". Ugh.

I remember when Gardner came in he said that Michigan's playbook is essentially Inkster's playbook with different names, so it's not all that surprising that he already has an excellent grasp on it.

It's one thing for a freshman to say he knows the playbook, and another for the coaching staff to think so.  With two quality QBs who have a year under their belts, how are we going to find time for Gardner?  If Denard and Tate stay healthy, I can't see him playing in non-garbage time situations.  And that's a waste of a year's eligibility IMO.

Knowing the playbook is one thing.  Getting used to the speed of the college game and learning how to read varied defensive schemes is quite another.  Also, he'll probably be hit harder than he's ever been hit in high school - how does he respond?

Granted, the only way to truly ever know if he's ready is to throw him out there, but I'd like for them to hold onto the redshirt, if at all possible.  This assumes the team is getting along swimmingly with TF and DR at the helm.  If they both somehow suck or get injured at the same time, not a lot of options at that point.  Just hope it doesn't ever get to the point where they NEED to give DG snaps, and hope he doesn't come in for a few superfluous snaps at the positive end of a blowout (yes please - to the blowout, not to DG getting garbage time).
