Gameday parking question

Submitted by jace owen on
I need some help for Saturdays game. Due to some morning commitments with the kids, I cannot get to the game just before kickoff. Expect to be there 1130 or 1145. Does anyone have any parking advice? Thanks and Go Blue

or stash a car close by and have somebody drop you off/ use an uber.\

I think your real problem is going to be traffic as opposed to parking. There are always people selling spaces on their driveway/ lawn before the game, so you can do that, but traffic will be rough.

In addition to parking, I'd give some thought to planning your route ahead of time. Game day traffic is no joke and avoiding Main, Stadium, AA/Saline, State and Washtenaw might be your best bet if you can do it.

I've actually done something like that myself even though it is the long way around Ann Arbor for me considering the direction I am coming from (southern Wayne County) - I'll take M-14 to Main / Barton and go as far south as I feasibly can if I know I am going to be cutting it close for game days. After that, as others have mentioned, you can find street and lawn parking for mostly decent prices (as gameday parking goes), but you'll be walking definitely.

One of many options:

Comfortable walking fifteen minutes (before and after the game)? Approach Ann Arbor from the north (or, at least, say away from I-94 between Jackson Road and US-23) and park in one of the surrounding neighborhoods (e.g., Burns Park). Look for Ferdon Road (a north-south street) on the map for a location clue.

I am in a similar situation.  I usually park in a structure and just walk, but on Saturday and I can't get there until kickoff.  It is going to be tight.  I am curious about this too.  Any advice on a back route?  I sometimes wind through North Campus or cut through Kerry Town.

I am wondering if Google maps can help me avoid backups.

Any advice would be much appreciated!!

I have to coach my sons soccer game Saturday morning and an leaving GR at 930. That gets me to Ann Arbor by 1130. Realistically how late will we be and what is best route?
Thanks for all the help. Its my first game in a long time.

I am planning on being a little late just trying to save as much time as possible. I got free tickets yesterday from a friend and could not pass them up.

By the way, this is why I love mgoblog. All the help and advice is very much appreciated.

I have a related but different question. I will be there plenty early, but was thinking about bringing bicycles. This will be my 14 year old son's first game in Ann Arbor. I thought it would make cruising around campus easier if we brought them. I'd like to take him around a good part of campus. We both have heavy duty locks, so I'm not worried about securing them. I was kind of planning on looking for street parking somewhere just east of State Street, south of Hill.

Also have a bunch of other questions. Is the drum line around 10am at Revelli? Gates open at 11am? Anything else happening in the morning that I should take him to see? Are there any camera restrictions? What is the current water bottle policy . . . no water allowed, or did that change when Brandon left? Seat cushions?

I'd skip the bicycles unless you are planning on doing it at least several hours before or after the game. Otherwise there will simply be too many people out to be able to ride. Not only that, many of them (ahem) won't be in a great condition to be looking out for bicycles and it only takes one idiot to really ruin your day.

I agree about riding around for pleasure on game day, but bringing a bike, parking 4-5 miles from the stadium and riding in might be a good option for the OP to get through the game day traffic. I would always ride in when I lived on the north side and it took a fraction of the time it would have taken to drive with the game day traffic. There are racks off Keech near the Facilities Service Building.

I've done the cycling thing a bunch of times, but not recently, so I couldn't tell you the best place to park. I'd guess that your location idea would be a good one.

Anyway, I think it's a great way to get to the game as long as you're aside the main pedestrian flow to the stadium. You'll get away fast, too.

I like to come in off of M-14, and park on Gott between Felch & Hiscock.

Not because it's convenient.  Because the fact that streets named "Felch" and "Hiscock" run parallel titillates my middle school sense of humor.

from North Campus. Steer clear of the south side of town for your route in, I-94 can really turn into a parking lot. I've had a lot of luck coming in through the North side of town and driving across campus to help avoid traffic. I've parked before at the parking structure between S Forest and Church. I'm guessing this is probably about a 20 minute walk to the stadium but it also really helps with being able to get out of AA after the game and avoid traffic as well.

Avoid main campus completely.  Up on North Campus at the School of Music, they have free parking on weekends.  Park your car there, then run over to Pierpont Commons to catch a blue bus, which is also free.  It'll take you down to the Diag.

From there, walk to the stadium.  It'll be about a 20 minute trek.

Sounds complicated, yes.  Plus after the game the buses back up to North Campus will be jam-packed with students trying to get back home.  And I admit, if you don't exactly know where you're going, you might get lost.

But, you won't have to deal with any traffic at all, plus everything is free.

You'll probably miss the first couple minutes of the game this way, but you probably won't be on time anyway with how hectic State Street and surrounding areas get.

In the past I have parked in a grass lot across from the shopping center with Bruegger's and Busch's, etc (drawing a blank on the name of it) and, while it seems like a great distance, it is an 11-12 minute walk to the stadium.  I have never seen them fill up, so if you get there by 11:45 you should be able to get in by kickoff (which is almost never at precisely 12:00 sharp).

Park at Park Place Apartments. Right on the corner of Stadium and Pauline. It's a 15/20 minute walk straight down Pauline to the stadium. Coming back you are right by 94/M14. No charge and no parking pass needed at the complex.
