Game Day Open Thread (Desmond strongly calls out Marcus Hall)

Submitted by M-Dog on

Desmond strongly calls out Ohio State's Marcus Hall (and Meyer and Delany) for his antics at the Game.

He made a great point about Hall not being suspended, along the lines of:  "It would not have been up to my coach or the Big Ten commissioner if I had done something like that to disgrace my family and my program.

My dad, DJ would have stepped in and flat out said 'Son, you are not playing'."

Honor still lives.

But if he doesn't play it has to be of his (or his family's) volition.  Come on.  Did any of us really get offended over this?  Is our view of Ohio any worse than it was before?  Really, it doesn't matter.

Who it does effect is his family and his name.  So if his father came in and told his son he wasn't going to play, it'd be fine.  It wouldn't be cool if Delany came in and laid down the hammer on Hall.

Am I the only one who thinks the fighting on the field was worse than the double bird on the way out?  ABC is on a seven second delay, if the double bird was that terrible wouldn't they have blacked it out?  Where is the apology from ABC/ESPN for broadcasting that most terrible of acts?  Why isn't Desmond calling out ABC/ESPN for airing the act?  I would think if Desmond worked for a company that brought acts like that into the living rooms of american families, DJ would have stepped in and flat out said 'Son, you are not working for these people anymore.'

Or maybe it was just a chance for some broadcasters to grab a little of that self congratulatory moral high ground.  It must be valuable, because everybody on that set was scrambling to get it.

By this point, nobody expects Urban Meyer to take any disciplinary action against a player for anything short of felony charges, so that's no surprise.  OSU is getting what they hired in that respect - someone who will win games and fail to develop the characters of young men.

And Jim Delany has repeatedly shown that he values the almighty dollar over things like academic integrity (admitting Nebraska to the B1G) and tradition (admitting Rutgers/Maryland).  Do we really expect him to take a stand against Hall when OSU winning today would bring the conference so much money, by getting OSU into the NCG and by putting two teams in the BCS?

We can bitch and moan all we want, but this is what we get for having a commissioner like Delany, and this is what Ohio gets for hiring a coach like Meyer.

but I have to disagree on this one.  As a typical red-blooded alpha male who was rather enjoying the fight scene between two storied rivals, I can't really find it in me to care that one of them cheerfully flipped the rest of us off.

on the heated rivalry. It doesn't show intensity or heat of the moment. It's tasteless and singles him out away from his team. If he didn't do that flipping off it was a heated rivalry fight he just made a mockary of himself by losing self control over his own stupidity.

I think the real issue here is that Meyer pretends to be a guy of high moral character who cares about education and developing young men.  The problem is -- like many -- its just an act.  I think what Desmond was saying is that to others -- Bo and Carr among them -- it wasn't an act and they valued such things.  I know, I know, we have countless examples of our program not living up to these values (i.e., we can be just as dirty as anyone else), however, teams like OSU take it to another level.

If I were Desmond, I would've done the same thing. I'm fine with not suspending Wilson for the game, but I'd guarantee that, had OSU lost last week, and with it, a shot at the national title, Delaney would've suspended Hall for this game. After years of getting embarressed in bowl season, Delaney is doing whatever he can to make sure OSU can win the national championship. But its okay, because he gave Hall a stern "public reprimand," or whatever the hell that means.

I love Desmond.  I love him saying this.  I think this makes Michigan look good.  I think more people should be saying this.

And, deep inside, I don't mind at all that he did it.  I like it and what it contributes to the rivalry.  I'm not offended.  And now I get yet another example of what poor shmucks Ohio players/fans are.

All that said, it doesn't matter urban was never going to suspend any other player further!  Either the big ten was going to, uhmm nope, or it wasn't happening so we all knew it wasn't happening.
