The nutty Michigan coverage isn't so much about Harbaugh as it is a signal to the Big Ten that Fox wants to party.
The Game 2011 postgame interacting with bucknuts
My cousin told me "its comical how you guys have 0 class and HE HEARD that the motivation for our celebration was that we would rather lie down on the ground then shake their hands" hahahahaha
Every Buckeye fan I talk to thinks Urban is the chosen one. Most still aren't taking Michigan too seriously imo, but it could just be my friends. I think they assume Urban will will almost every game he plays against Michigan. Next year sets up as a huge turning point game for the series. Denard as a Senior gives us a great chance to win in Columbus....and it would put a ton of pressure on them to win the following year.
I keep hearing the same thing you are hearing. That next year the winning streak begins again with Urban at the helm. I am not a firm believer in this. Part of Meyer's draw was his word.....he seemed like a good guy who by all accounts cared about his program. This opinion has changed a little with him taking the job. He now can be seen as a liar and a guy who is just in it for the wins. This sits well with the Ohio fanbase as most of them still believe that Tressel is still innocent. Heck, most of them would accept him with open arms if he wanted the job back. Can't wait to see how the "Spread" works in the Big Ten yet again. Just ask Rodriguez and Zook.
I may be the only one, but I'm very afraid of Urban Meyer signing on with Ohio. Not only is he a good recruiter in a state with lots of good recruits, he has ties to Florida high schools and has proven that he can win. I think we all know that the spread offense worked fine at Michigan. And I think, after some reflection, that we will agree that Ohio's offense is going to formidable under Meyer. I, for one, am afraid.
Last I checked, Borges is a very highly respected OC. Hoke has shown he knows how to develop kids to play their asses off and become better as the season goes on. Recruiting is doing just fine. OSU is always going to be good, no matter who coaches them. This just makes it a rivalry again.
I expected this type of overreaction to my comment. If people go back and read it, there is not one reference or implication that Meyer at OSU is better than Hoke/Mattison at Michigan. In no way did I demean our coaching staff or say that Michigan would not win head-to-head. I simply stated that Meyer is not to be overlooked or pushed aside like many are doing. Having him at OSU is much more fearsome than some other less known entity, if you ask me. That said, JBlaze had the best point below about no one knowing what effect the sanctions will have on OSU's ability to recruit. This is the X-factor.
If you don't think Urban is better than Hoke/Mattison/Borges, then why are you scared? Why would you ever fear any coach? Not to be a prick but you do sound a little like a wuss.
WHO is the guy Meyer called "the greatest recriuter in the country"? WHO was his championship-years' DC? Greg Mattison. What happened after he left? Recruiting falls off, defense suffers, Tebow graduates. Meyer tires of football and retires. Then Meyer tires of football and retires again.
Yeah, he's a good coach. But this fear-mongering is ridiculous. We'll get ours. We're one-and-oh against the man, and counting...
Do you think it's really safe to say that Rodriguez' offense worked well against top flight Big Ten defenses? I also think he will get some recruits from Florida, but osu always has. It is still a fact that kids in Florida grow up wanting to be a Gator, Hurricane, or Seminole, and that isn't going to change just because some guy in ohio used to be the Gator's head coach. I think many people are overrating his affect on pulling a significant amount of talent out of Florida.
I was going to say the same thing. Ron Zook was an amazing recruiter and a former HC at Florida, and he didn't open up a pipeline for getting kids from the Sunshine State to Illinois. Kids tend to stick around where they grew up, and with some many top programs in the South I don't see OSU pulling any more top talent to the Horeshoe than usual.
He's already pulling kids out of one of his former Florida hotspots; Lakeland.
Ricquan Southward is the first "Meyer recruit."
The rest of the big ten coaches, and half the SEC for that matter, mind as well just give up on the entire state of florida if Meyer's already plucking out two star wide recievers with little other D-1 interest.
Mattison the best recruiter. Last I checked he was on our sidelines.
1) Mattison knows Urban's O and his way of thinking, which helps. Plus, he can simply point to the Ravens and say that was his D.
2) Mattison was Meyer's better (maybe best?) recruiter, so he knows how to recruit
3) Borges will run a west coast style offense, with Morris (probably even Garnder) at QB, so the types of players M and O recruit on Offense will be somewhat different (look at Dunn).
4) Charlie Weiss is recruiting at UF, and while he's a bad coach, he's an excellent recruiter. Also, with FSU's resurgence and Golden at Miami, the FL schools are all solid (hell, even USF/ UCF aren't terrible), so it won't be as easy to lure talent out of Florida as it was previously.
5) ND and Kelly will fight (and beat) OSU at recruiting the midwest elite spread players. PSU could be a factor too, depending on who they hire. Hell, even our old offensive staff at Pitt could steal 1 player away from OSU.
6) OSU sanctions have not been announced yet, and a scholarship reduction means less depth, and potentially missing out on project players.
I appreciate you taking the time to help ease my fears. All that makes good sense, I just think of Urban Meyer as a threat, just as Tressel was a real threat at the helm every year. It would have been better for us fans (or maybe just me) if they hired a lesser entity. Or maybe I'm crazy (which is likely the case regardless).
a coach with a lower ceiling would have been better for us, but Meyer isn't unstoppable.
being good is better for Michigan, and for the big 10.
We have to trust that Hoke, Al, Greg can and WILL recruit, prepare and mold better teams over the next decade.
Let's also not forget that OSU and Meyer will be under the NCAA microscope for at least a few years and will have to walk the straight and narrow in just about every facet of their program. I think people are overlooking how much this will affect their recruiting and ability to attract the kinds of players that gravitated towards Tressel (and his anything goes program) and the SEC.
aren't we pretty much resigned to the fact that Ohio is as arrogant as they come and they really couldn't give a crap about compliance and following the rules? That is, unless the NCAA surprises me and actually punishes them sometime soon...
Add into that whole equation Urban, owner of one of the biggest egos in all of sports, and well, I'm not really planning on them following the rules.
I sure as hell hope he recruits Florida. More Florida recruits means more Ohio recruits for us.
The spread works for Northwestern, but I still think he'll fail without Mattison.
The spread works in the B1G. It certainly worked against Michigan. It worked against Ohio in the National Championship game. Also, it helped Northwestern consistently win more games than their personnel would indicate, and Zook did get Illinois to a Rose Bowl with it. Michigan had a majority of underclassmen during its three years of the spread, not to mention first-year starters at QB every year.
The main question is whether it will continue to be effective now that so many coaches are familiar with it. The bottom line, though, is that if it worked in the SEC, it will work in the B1G. And the "two-minute offense" in the NFL, which is incredibly more efficient than the regular ones, is enabled in part by spreading the field.
The spread will work in the B1G. If Urban Meyer is the Urban Meyer of old, it could be a really bad period of time for Michigan fans. That's why I am so hopeful that he is not able to put in the time and effort to get the job done anymore.
I had 2 OSU fans behind me on Saturday and as they were talking to the UM fans sitting next to them, they said " I have two words for you, Urban Meyer". I turned around and said, you know you have a coach right now, right? Why aren't you supporting him? (crickets and silence) They're such idiots.
I guess they don't remember the Cap One Bowl in 2007 (my last game as a student and band member, source of my avatar) when UM eviscerated Meyer, Heisman winner Tim Tebow and a team that more-or-less intact would win the MNC the next year. If Hart hadn't fumbled twice inside the five that game would have been an even more ridiculous upset.
My father said he expected Ohio to win that game. I guess he's that guy. We agreed that the outcome was good for the rivalry. He also lamented the fact that Ohio is still facing sanctions and Miami (YTM) already finished getting hit by the hammer.
I got a text after the game that said 'I forgot how bad it sucked to lose to Michigan'. A few guys had some colorful gestures for me before I even got a word out this morning. That was fun too, they knew what was coming
I dont associate with those types of people.
Then how do you order lunch?
His msu friends
Wait! Then who plows his driveway? I'm confused.
You're too kind.
Well EBSBS boards were hilarious...
All I kept hearing is "enjoy it, because Urban will dominate". Yawn. He couldn't win with Tebow, so I won't hold my breathe.
Urban will be good at OSU. But I still like Hoke. In the rivalry, 10 years from now, Hoke will win 6 times, Urban 4.
They'll be good games.
My conversation with a die hard Buckeye fan was pretty brief. He's only allowed 3 phone calls per week and 30 minutes of yard-time.
The silence out of my Ohio friends is the best part of it all. For the past few years they run their mouth until the cows come home but that all stopped Saturday.
I did see a Michigan fan be an idiot and a brawl breakout on my way into the game but I digress.
After the game, I saw two different instances of Buckeyes fighting eachother. Two guys then two girls. WTF? I LOLed.
thankfully the only ohio state fans i have to deal with are the ones i see at the game. there was a real loud and obnoxious one in section 17 screaming "you can't beat us" at halftime. he was a bit quieter after the game as all the wolverine faithful laughed, pointed and waved goodbye to him.
however, i did have a little talk with a few other OSU fans who were just baffled by the poor clock management and choice to spike the ball on 3rd down. they didn't act like asshats during the game so i didn't give them any more grief than they already had.
Plane loading. Some UM fans on the plane proudly wearing their gear. Three OSU fans (one loudmouth guy and two girlfriends) boarded the plane making comments like "there's another one", "aw shit, another one", "well, I guess it's OK for Michigan to beat us once every 8 years". Somewhat obnoxious, but nothing new, right?
Then an elderly UM fan said to the guy, "It was a great game though". After they passed to back of plane one of the girls was laughing and blurted rather loudly: "your refs really sucked though".
You wouldn't believe the reactions by other passengers on the plane, since there were quite of few moms and families with young kids travelling home from the Thanksgiving holiday. A lot of eyes got big.
Maybe they were still drunk. Don't know.
The best bit was that a UC-Irvine (Go Anteaters!) student asked the trio too lightly for many to hear: "you mean the same refs that called back all those touchdowns?"
Had to be there, but many laughed.
Thanks Anteater student where ever the hell you are.
I have a Buckeye acquaintance who gloated all over my facebook page after the game last year. This year? She posted a status after the game insisting that she had more important things going on in her life than a mere football game. Oh, please. Buckeye sour grapes are so, so sweet.
In years past I have also suffered from the gloating of an OSU alum on her facebook page. She is otherwise a smart accomplished person but all the logic and class goes out the window when it comes to anything OSU football, particularly related to the rivlary. Or, I should clarify, that's how it used to be. This year she has been aaaaaawfully quiet.
I finally saw her write something about Urban though.
Had some tool next to us who wouldn't stop yapping about Michigan not being a BCS team, etc. Wouldn't leave, because he was transplanted to the area, and didn't have to bail...2 excruciating hours. Tried everything, changing the subject to: respective talent levels, what if TP hadn't gone to OSU, Urban, Fickell, Tressel, tailgate foods, et al.
One of my Marine Corps Marathon running buddies is a Buckeye and he basically had a "shrugged shoulders" reaction to the loss and is hoping for the best with Urban Meyer.
At the game, the guy standing to my left was a Buckeye but was very gracious/tolerant/not an a-hole since he was at the game with a Michigan friend. He even admitted to me that Fitz's TD should have counted. The only annoying Buckeye within earshot of me was this cute but obnoxious blonde in the next row yelling "LET'S GO BUCKS!" at every chance she could get. People were telling her to shut up vociferously in the second half. At the end of the game, she got into it verbally with a Michigan fan sitting right behind her.
I had an identical experience with an Ohio student back in 1993. She was sitting in the student section (her friends apparently broke code and got her a ticket). She kept yelling "GO BUCKS!" at the top of her lungs. It took about 1/2 of a quarter to realize that she needed to be silenced. What followed was a dazzling display of "shock and awe" with frozen marshmallows. Long story short - we didn't hear much more from her after that. (Although, it could have been the beatdown that Michigan laid on her beloved Buckeyes that shut her up as well . . .)
I was there. That diving catch by Mercury Hayes was nasty.
all wouldve been excused if she had gotten into it orally as well.
All of my life. I am one of only three Michigan fans that I knew grewing up. My family are all ohio fans, and my Dad and Uncle (who's opinion I respect most as an ohio fan) both congratulated me on the win. The rest of my friends are idiots, and just kept running their mouths about Urban Meyer and how Denard is all Michigan has and they are screwed when he leaves. I calmly explained to them that we have another player who rushed for a thousand yards this year, and how we had 3 receivers that had more receiving yards than ohio's top receiver this year. They then tried to pop off about how there is so much more talent at osu than Michigan, so we have no chance long-term. I then explained that we have one of the top recruiting classes in the country this year, and how osu's classes haven't been that great over the last couple of years either. They then tried to repeat their same arguments over and over, because most ohio fans I have met in my life are ignorant when it comes to knowledge of the game and everything involved with it. I have been a Michigan fan since I was old enough to remember, and I am proud to not be like the thousands of osu fans I know. I did not rub it in when we won, I simply said it was a hell of a game and that the kids on both teams played their asses off. I was reminded of Brian's recollection of his trip to Columbus years ago by a few of them that still responded, "Fuck Michigan". I just responded with saying classy move, typical buckeye fan response. They could have beaten us 15 years in a row, and I will always be smug to buckeye fans, because I know we will always be classier than them.
Just out of curiosity, how do you end up a Michigan fan growing up in Ohio in a family of Ohio fans? I mean, great that you are. You totally picked the right side. :)
