The Game as the 1st game?

Submitted by Blue in sec country on
I haven't heard anyone suggest The Game as the opener. I would rather it be the last but I think the first is the next best thing. There are not many big games the first weekend so all the attention would be on that game. Both teams would go into the game healthy so we don't have to hear "well so-and-so was hurt". There would be more time to prep for the game but less film to study. I just think if it can't be the last it shouldn't be in the middle of the season, that's just stupid.

I think that would be just too weird for me honestly.  Plus Big Ten play doesn't start that soon, the whole conference would have to change how they do out of conference games

In general, as far as a championship game goes, I don't understand what the difference is between a rematch from the previous week or a rematch from 3/4/5 weeks ago anyway.  Leave it last.

All that having The Game as the first game, makes even more intra-conference games meangingless.  That is why The Game has to be the last game of the season.

I think we all agree that the last game is the best but if it doesn't end up there the first seems like the next best thing. Why would the whole BigTen have to change the way they do OC if it's just M-OSU involved? The weekend they were going to play in the middle of the season gets filled with an OC opponent. No other teams need to get involved.

The whole "if it doesn't end up there" premise needs to be dropped.  There is no reason for us to compromise on this.  Dave Brandon and Gene Smith need to man up and refuse to accept this from the league.  The Big Ten has no right to force its two historic flagships to move the most popular game on the calendar.

If that happens, it's likely that we'll face ND the following week. OSU then ND to start the season would be a hard stretch, and it would really put all of our national prominence games early on. I'm not liking it.

So then our highlight of the season would come in September?  No thanks.

It's just not fair that we have to suffer the double whammy of not being in the same division as OSU and not being able to play them at the end of the season.  I could grudgingly accept being in different divisions if we were to still play the last week, but the combination of the two would make it almost like a nonconference game.  It would be a big game, but it wouldn't mean the same.

As for the opener, for a long time we played MSU as our conference opener.   I am in favor of going back to that.

Is this possibly the first thing that Michigan and Ohio State fans have ever agreed on, no snark, no subtle dig, just the paramount importance of the sanctity of The Game as the last game of the year?

Look at FSU v Miami. that game has no luster whats so ever. The teams are not polished, the play is faulty, and its a conference game that has major implications.

Now look at FSU v Florida, even tho UF has been on a roll, the play is so much better from FSU and in my opinion its a bigger and a better game than FSU v Miami.

I know its not a conference game.

I am not going to kill you for the suggestion, and it is original.  But, no.  I mean hell no!

OSU and Michigan are meant to watch each other out of the corner of their face masks for months until they finally dispose of all other foes and clash in an epic game for all the marbles.  (2006, but with a better ending.)  It is a game to be savored in anticipation rather than thrown out there.  I am resigned to the fact that the Big Ten is willing to screw this up for money.  But, the first game idea just seems like watching the last ten minutes of a good movie and then watching the rest of it.  You just end up ruining the whole thing.

Even when M is having a bad season, we can always look ahead to the OSU game. If we beat them, the season can't be considered a total failure.

A loss to OSU week one would make for a hopeless fall.

Maybe they can put some sort of system in place which would aleviate the fears of the situation in which the teams would play in the last regular season game and then the conference campionship game. Possibly some sort of tiebreaker system if the teams were to split the two games? But The Game has to be the final regular season game, there is no other way to preserve the value of the rivarly.

One game, winner goes to the Big Ten Championship game, loser doesn't.

But since Brandon knows the tradition but is also a brilliant businessman, I have decided that the only explaination for his inexplicable dallience with moving the game is a large offer from ESPN/ABC to move the game to Labor Day weekend, maybe Labor Day itself as a bookend to the Miami/FSU game.

This would really, really suck.  I am usually quite wordy, but I don't have the words to fully express the massive "sucktitude" of moving this game.

I have signed the petition.  I would encourage those who don't want The Game diminished in this fashion to do the same and let Brandon know how you feel.

That rivalry is a perfect example of how a conference can screw up a good thing. The ACC put them in opposite divisons in an attempt to get two Miami/FSU games every year. It's never happened. Meanwhile, Alabama and Auburn are in the same division and the Iron Bowl is still awesome, even with the SEC title game still to come.

after I read the title.

NO NO NO NO. Last game or I riot. Seriously, when you play a full season, that's how you become a team. Playing in the first game would involve sloppy teams still finding themself. Last game. Period.

Blasphemy! That game should always be the last game of the season until the bowls start. It is the perfect way to finish the schedule and I never want to see it changed. That game is the reason we all live for the month of November.

I see that you posted this around 7:30.  It must have taken you at least a solid 2 hours to get drunk enough to think that this was a good idea.  MY by math, that means that you started drinking arounds 5:30.  Now I know it's a Friday, but you may have a problem . . .
