They keep showing games where Michigan loses. I've been craving CFB for weeks. Gonna set the DVR for this one. Braylon was unreal. I was at that game.
FYI: 2004 UM/MSU 3OT on BTN
C'mon...think of something useful. You don't want to get tagged as "redundant" ...come on, think of something, anything. Oh wait. Jabrill Peppers. Boom, neg avoided.
Still amazes me on how the lions past on Woodley and Harris to draft Stanton. Thanks Millen.
This is one of my favorite sports memories of all time. By the end of the game the stadium was only 3/4 full (if that) with people lined up at the gates trying to get back in. Braylon stole the night
It got really cold really quick, and it was Halloween party night. So most people bailed when it got bad. Joke's on them, but I get how a lukewarm fan student could justify it around the early 4th quarter.
One of my favorite MMB memories, that's for sure.
state currently up 17-7 in the game. At this point, I probably had shouted a minimum of 40 profanities.
Damn shame they took the videos off of youtube. I heard there is some kind of new project them at mgovideo are working on though that will have the content.
Henne sucked early on in this game. THROW IT TO BRAYLON.
awesome calling this game. . .
Who is this annoying squeaky voiced southern guy.
Terry Bowden maybe?
One of the Bowdens, IIRC. Terry?
Terry Bowden he used to work with mike tirico on abcsports before it was espn on abc
I was watching in Chicago with a good friend who went to State. After they scored to go up 24-7 I congratulated him on their victory. But I kept watching...
This game was nine years ago...wow
as I looked at the date in the corner.
Apparently 9 years is beyond the capacity of many MSU fans' memories since they are "4-1" against us.
That was the second questionable PI call. I wonder if these will effect the outcome
I still remember it like it was just a few sdays ago really - my wife and I were actually supposed to go to a family event that evening and I'd made a deal with her that we would go to the game then go home and go to the reception, which wasn't far from the house. Fortunately, it was for someone in my family - being sports people, they understood why we were horribly late, but they also understood the smile on my face, as everyone there was glued to the ABC telecast.
I think there were actually over 1,000 yards of total offense in that game, and we actually didn't win that particular battle of numbers. Then again, we obviously did not need to outrun them - we had Edwards. As I recall, there was some buzz that he might leave after 2003 to go to the NFL, but thankfully he stayed. Indeed, in the postgame interviews, I remember Braylon saying, "This is why I came back."
Mike Hart actually rushed for over 200 yards in this game. It was one of his three straight 200-yard performances that year.
was the unsung hero in this game. The wind, the pressure he never missed a kick!
This team was loaded. Should have destroyed the overrated USC team and beaten OSU. NFL players everywhere. Carr was good, but his teams never preformed up to there capability. Except for 97.
You mean Texas? USC was 2003.
Yeah, no. We were not "heavy favorites" in that game.
The USC team we played in 2003 was #1 in the country. They were the favorites, not us.
Texas yes. But still looking back we had more talent.
Vince Young was not walking out that door. Texas was loaded, and proved it the next season by winning it all.
2004 is actually, in retrospect, one of the years where Carr really got as much out of his talent as one could expect. We had Braylon, of course, but much of the rest of the core talent on that team was young: Breaston a redshirt soph, with Henne/Hart/Long true Frosh, etc. That team won the B1G title and came oh-so-close to winning the Rose Bowl, as close to a moral victory in a Rose Bowl as you can have.
I was pretty happy with the year. What was so dispiriting was seeing the team squander all that talent for the next three years. And yes, I'm including the 2006 season--the way they lost the Rose Bowl to USC was inexcusable.
This makes me sad but I will watch it anyways :(
Give me Tirico over Gus Johnson 7 days a week and twice on Saturday.
Thanks for this. Can't get ever be sad about watching this one.
For you kind sir
This was michigan's official only ever night game. Especially two days before November.
... I was in a T-shirt and shorts, freezing, and thought it was over. I'll never ever forgive myself.
But those who stay...
I was there with my BIL, who is a big Staee fan. The temperature dropped maybe 30 degrees during the game. He wanted to leave early since Staee had "put it away". But since I drove, we stuck it out. It was a long drive back to Lansing for him.
Kind of obvious but it is amazing how good Braylon was. Kind of forgot over the last few years but he was just dominant at times.
The only UM/MSU game I've ever been to.
For some reason, this was a 4:30 start. Day before Halloween. It was really windy walking to the stadium, which made me nervous for field goals and extra points.
This had to be Sparty's best performance at the Big House in the last 40 years. And they were a shitty team that year as well. I don't know how they were able to put in that performance.
MSU's attempt at a game winning field goal at the end of regulation (which was set up thanks to a phantom pass interference on us) was in my end zone. All the action was in the opposite end zone.
The MSU fan section was 15 rows behind me. They started taunting us when they were up 27-10. All the Michigan fans around me were screaming for us to throw the damn ball.
The wind did not let up. Every single extra point in the overtimes was about as nerve wrecking as they could be.
When it was all over, I turned around a hugged the guy behind me. He probably thought I was nuts but he hugged back.
Pretty sure it was a normal 3:30 start. It was dark for so long because it was late in the year and, of course, the game went quite long.
MSU was pretty average that year, but they weren't terrible, and they used a running spread with a mobile QB. And, of course, it took until Lloyd's last career game for Michigan to figure out how to stop a mobile quarterback. Drew Stanton simply shadowed the success enjoyed by guys like Donovan McNabb, Zak Kustok, Carlyle Holiday, Asad-Abdul Kalik, Troy Smith, Vince Young, Armanti Edwards, Dennis Dixon, and others.
So their offensive success really isn't that hard to explain in that context. After Stanton was knocked out, MSU slowed down, but Michigan's offense was pitiful until they torched the non-Braylon portion of the playbook.
Closest I've ever come to walking out on a comeback. My wife and I were at the game, and she was cold and tired and worn out from being crammed into our seat with an extra-wide neighbor basically jamming into us. She spent a lot of time standing in front of me.
After the last MSU touchdown our row emptied out a bit, and she sat down and asked when we could leave. I said, "Iet's wait and see what happens on the next possession." Of course, you figure either it will be a disaster and you can leave, or a slim chance of a touchdown and you stay for a hopeful finish.
Field Goal. "Can we leave now?"
"Let's just wait and s..."
1:45 later, we left. I was happy, she was cold.
I'll never forget this game. There were very bad storms to the north of AA that afternoon. While watching the game my power went out and I immediately went into freakout mode. I jumped in my car and raced to my buddies house 10 minutes away to try and not miss any. I get to his house and his power goes out 15 minutes after I arrive. At this point it's the 4th quarter so we have to think fast. We grab a couple 6 packs and head out to his car in the driveway. We sat back sipping beers and listened to Frank and Jim take us home. Ah the good old days.
I always remember MSU fans constantly saying "If Stanton didn't get hurt, then we would have won" but they seem to forget Dowdell came in and actually played pretty damn well and then extended the lead. It was bad defense that got them... and Braylon.
This made it oh-so-sweet to then beat them again in 2005 in EL with their precious Stanton healthy set for his supposed revenge game against Michigan.
