I'd credit Kiffin less and the overall draw of Southern Cal + USC football tradition more
landing spot. will be interesting to see how he does.
I'd credit Kiffin less and the overall draw of Southern Cal + USC football tradition more
And Pat Hayden is a great ambassador too. He brings so much more credibility and class to USC. I don't know how much involvement he has (if any?) with recruiting though.
Right, he brings so much class and credibility that he just had to hire Kiffin to carry on that precedent of class and credibility.
Mike Garrett hired Kiffin.
I think Kiffen is on a pretty short leash with Hayden.
Just listen to how he handles himself (PH). He is a class act..and it pains me to say it, because I really, really dislike that school and it's fans.
Agreed, I can't stand SC, but it's hard not to like PH, he's the type of AD everyone wishes they had.
Dunno who you're speaking for, Gene Smith is an ass
That makes you atypical of the OSU fanbase.
I can assure you, the amount of people that think he handled the past two years the complete wrong way greatly outnumber the alternative.
I think Kiffin was hired before Hayden. Kiffin was hired by Mike Garrett.
USC football tradition?
Seriously? USC has great football tradition.
But with a fanbase like they have (most band-wagony ever), I have a hard time considering them to have "tradition". Even if they do have pretty rich history of winning and producing NFL talent. I guess it comes down to semantics, and what you consider "tradition".
I think a "rich history of winning and producing NFL talent" would literally fit the definition of tradition. So... you just said, even if they have tradition, you don't consider it tradition... Which makes very little sense
Not to mention the most wins and times playing in the Rose Bowl, which has now become the de facto marker of tradition.
I am fairly sure that Ronnie Lott, Lynn Swann, Marcus Allen, O.J. Simpson, Tim Rossovich, Anthony Davis, Rodney Peete, Chris Claiborne and numerous others would disagree.
Anthony Munoz, Junior Seau...
We don't need no stinkin 5 stars. We are just going to take all of your 4s.
that is what I have to say about Kiffin.
/insert so-youre-saying-theres-a-chance.gif here
But I'm not hopeful.
Down to three with visits lined up to Nebraska and Michigan before deciding. Since this is on his dime he is at least giving us serious consideration otherwise why spend the money.
Yeah, he's a really good recruiter to begin with, but even Dantonio could pull in recruits like this if he was at USC. Of course he wouldn't though, because everyone knows all of the national talent in the country is in Toledo, regardless of what the recruiting services say...
Grass not tall enough at SC for layin in the weeds.
but I'm pretty fond of our players imported from Toledo.
I'm pretty sure Ebenezer Scrooge could recruit well at USC. Just sayin'.
Let's keep all Scrooge references between the months of November and January. Thanks in advance.
It is between November and January!
Jan, Feb, Mar, Apr, May, Jun, July, Aug, Oct, Nov
Although I have no idea where it's from, I must say this made me laugh.
You just blew my mind man
+1 for any Duck Tale reference.
So why was USC mired in mediocrity in the 90s until Petey-boy rolled into town?
I think USC has been REALLY helped with the demise of UCLA football. UCLA is located in such a better part of town than USC, better academic school excluding USC's film-related stuff...
This has been on my mind lately, too. It's pretty amazing that UCLA has been so irrelevant for so long. There's more than enough talent in southern California to sustain two elite programs, and USC draws a lot of talent from outside the area anyway.
I don't follow the west coast programs that closely -- why exactly has UCLA been mediocre for so long despite all the advantages listed above? Is it just the string of mediocre head coaches since Terry Donahue? (Bob Toledo, Neuheisel) Bad facilities? Something else?
I think a run of bad coaches, in addition to the fact that UCLA plays 30 minutes to an hour (including traffic) @ the Rose Bowl away from their campus, thus killing any game day experience, has run their program down into the ground.
S'why you see guys going to Cal (at least Berkley has an on-campus stadium), Oregon (Phil Knight will give you plenty of toys in their brand-spanking new stadium facilities), in addition to USC.
I've heard some of the problems are that they salaries for the assistant coaches is substandard based on the UC salary structure. The coaches don't get paid enough to live anywhere near the more affluent campus area.
They're cheap. They don't want to spend the money on facilities and salaries necessary to be an elite football program. Even in basketball (which is really the flagship sport at UCLA), Pauly Pavilion was shockingly outdated for a program of UCLA's stature until the recent renovation.
probation for violations during their late 80's run of success.
USC has pretty much always been better than UCLA at football, other than for brief stretches in the mid 80s and late 90s. I don't know why, but that's the way it is. USC's recent decade of success has been a continuation, rather than a reversal, of historical trends.
But why is UCLA so bad? I think FrankMurphy gives some good reasons for it above. For whatever reason I feel like UCLA's management has not made it a priority, and has squeezed it out a bit.
With limited scholarships, maybe he is telling them he is only focusing on the best of the best???
With limited scholarships comes lack of depth which translates into early playing time. Luckily for Michigan, that is not the case at Safety for USC... safety if probably one of their deepest positions with at least 5 guys who could start right away.
When you look at the offers, USC has only given out offers to premier recruits. Having such a large number of instate recruits to go after coupled with the USC brand in a a great location, not much of a sales pitch needed. "Hey, come to USC and play with other great players, in a great locale, and receive a great education." Not ground-breaking stuff here.
On the plus side, they arrested two people in the murder of the two Hong Kong-born USC graduate students. They think it was a botched robbery attempt.
I agree, I never understand when people say that location is a draw for USC. LA? Especially west of the 405? Yes. USC just east of downtown? Hell to the no.
Not to mention the fact that you can sell elite recruits on the school's status as an NFL factory. Matt Cassel never started a single game at USC, yet he was drafted and has started over 50 games in the NFL.
Has anyword heard anything about when he is supposed to visit? I know he wants to visit us and Nebraska soon, but I haven't heard when, and it's starting to get somewhat close to his predetermined decision date.
The header of the linked article says he has "set his dates for his May visits to Nebraska and Michigan." You have to pay if you want specifics... or wait for one of the insiders here to dig it up.
Using what you(Rakefight) just posted and science I am going to say he will be visiting within the next ten days. /BillNyeStyle
Rivals made it sound like either this weekend or next.
Jerry Sandusky could recruit for USC
This isn't Nam. There are rules.
Has the whole MGoBoard gone crazy?!? Am I the only one who gives a shit about the rules?!?
You were going going good until this comment. Lol
But we've taken a really, really emphatic stance against Jerry Sandusky jokes. It's probably more absolute than it needs to be, but we're talking child rape, so it is what it is.
No Jerry Sandusky jokes.
You missed the alleged part.
I, BiSB, HEREBY ACCUSE JERRY SANDUSKY OF CHILD RAPE. I BELIEVE HIM TO BE GUILTY OF THE CRIMES WITH WHICH HE HAS BEEN CHARGED. HE ABUSED CHILDREN.
Your move, Sandusky's lawyer:
...as long as they're on the front page.
I don't want to get into a moral debate about what wrongs are greater, but I think most people would agree that a guy spending 20+ years personally abusing kids in the worst possible ways is worse than what Creepy Ohio Guy has done. But more importantly, while COG's crimes absolutely have victims, those victims weren't personally abused by COG. They don't have to read the jokes and know that their pain is fodder for lulz.
Is it a principled difference? No. But it seems that mocking Creepy Guy's creepiness will be somewhat more tolerable than mentions of Sandusky. Regardless, any jokes about anything COG did to earn his place on the offender registry will be treated the same as any Sandusky material.
I did skew an eyebrow when I saw him being thanked "for existing". Just because his victims don't know they're being further abused, I'm not sure we should all be glad he's around just because he makes OSU look foolish. I'd rather save the Buckeyes this blemish if it meant he wasn't on the earth.
If it's "just a joke", then you're stuck being the humor police. Which isn't a good job for any mod. And it's entirely possible for a personal blog to say "do as I say; not as I do"...because, it's a personal site. It just kind of removes the moral backing of any hammering. Just saying that allowing content based on "some child abusers not being as bad as others" is not a position I'd want to put anyone in. And I'm still kinda surprised no one else noticed or said anything about that part of the post.
Edit: I'm in no way thinking or saying Brian is glad child pornographers, individual or multitude, exist. It was a throwaway line that you'd give to Pryor or any embarrassing figure, not thought out, and meant in jest. It just seems woefully inconsistent with the blog's policy on child abusers not being funny.
1. Not a joke, name me a more stigmatized member/ex-member of the coaching and recruiting community in recent history. Notice that my post was preceding the "let's say who could recruit at USC joke parade".
2. On the subject, Sandusky jokes = bad, Waugh jokes = good? how about some solidarity on the issue
The biggest reason for the difference: Board jokes =/= front page jokes. We had to implement the Sandusky policy because we had three guys moderating three weeks worth of non-stop Sandusky coverage. The only way to tamp down the inappropriate jokes was to lay down the law. The measures leveled unto the board were as draconian as anything outside the RichRod firing situation.
I've deleted plenty of Waugh comments (and levied some useless point-related fines), but it hasn't had to be that comprehensive because it was a smaller story with a less viceral issue. Plus, I trust Brian/Ace/Heiko/Seth/etc. to exercise good judgment in these situations on the front page. And even if I didn't, they outrank me, so I can't exactly drop the hammer.
You'll also notice that I didn't delete your comment. I merely informed you of the general prohibition as a means of explaining why you were so roundly booed.
I certainly understand.I was simply clarifying that I was not making an offensive joke, rather pointing out an example of a stigma to show that the man in charge holds little consequence when it comes to drawing recruits.
I would like to add, that I think you're an excellent moderator, and though I'm not incredibly active on this board, since I only contribute to offer a different viewpoint, I will certainly differ to your opinion as the peacekeeper. Unrelated, I would go Blue if I lived in ND country as well.
thats ok we have dymonte!
Anything could happen
is thats exactly what USC does
ANYTHING can happen
Is it me or does the brunette have a unibrow?
I didn't even realize any of them had heads.
"Drunk white women for everyone!"
After looking at that photo, it's a good thing Brendan Gibbons didn't go to USC.
Although, I suspect most of them are actually brunettes...
There's no way to tell.
Missed the kick?
Hell, now I want to commit to USC.
TIME I FEEL IT COMING! GO BLUE!!!
Title: FWIW Probable USC Commit S'ua Craven Has Narrowed His List
Post: To USC
I'm not as negative about our chances with Cravens as everyone else seems to be. Yes, USC may be a heavy favorite, but then again, he will be visiting, and with him probably coming with Mr. School of the day in Mathis, maybe sugar shane and hoke will be able to get them when on campus. I dont think this race is over yet
hope Sua wants to get away from home he has 2 MIDWEST schools and only 1 Westcoast school.GO BLUE!!!
