FWIW: Kelly to ND via CMU source

Submitted by MGOARMY on
Sorry for posting a Brian Kelly to ND thread but I feel obligated to share what I just heard. I go to Central Michigan, and the CMU wrestling coach just told my friend in the school paper that he just got off the phone with B. Kelly and he will be announced ND's head coach tommarow. The wrestling coach and Kelly are good friends from Kellys time at CMU so I thought this was worth sharing.

I remember an article a few months ago, where Kelly mentioned how the UC administration hadn't fulfilled their promises on new football facilities Kelly had asked for. So if he keeps winning, and they don't help him out, a new ten year contract doesn't sound too logical from Kelly's point of view.

looking at the stadium and it's tiny. But I just don't see that there's room to renovate the stadium, as indicated, very much unless they add on steep and small second deck. It's encroached upon on all sides by other buildings.

until recently they were in C-USA where a 40k capacity stadium is about the norm. Their basketball facilities are pretty much on-par with the rest of the Big East and that has been their main athletic focus until the end of the Dantonio/ BK eras. You're right though they do have a world class DAAP program so I'm with you it is a bit surprising. If I had to guess it comes down to funding and focus. It's going to be interesting to see who they're able to bring in as their HC and whether he can keep up the football success. I'm still rooting for them; love to see a second big program in Ohio (they play OSU H-T-H in 2013).

this could really revive the UM/ND games going forward. Yes, I'm a little afraid of Kelly, but I'd much rather have another rivalry matchup actually be exciting and mean something. I'm not necessarily saying that I've been bored with the rivalry lately, but there's been so much negative press on both teams lately that I just want to see it given its proper respect again. Still a bit intimidated, though... a bit. ;) But confident in RR.

I seriously don't get why people are afraid of Kelly at all. RR has a more established track record and is more highly regarded than him in coaching circles. Kelly's a good coach, but all the fear and trepidation is really unwarranted. If he goes to ND, cool. It's good for the rivalry if both teams are good.

I agree that RR has a more established track record, hence my "still confident in RR" statement. But Kelly has done a good job at UC, and with all the positive press this year, probably wouldn't miss a beat in ND's recruiting. Either way, I think it would be a good matchup between the coaches and good for the rivalry. Now, as some have pointed out above, the timing of such an announcement seems fishy. It would be a bad move on his part to announce before this weekend's game (if it is true). I guess we'll find out soon enough.

I've been a fan of BK's offenses since he was up at GVSU but I'm not really all that afraid (anymore) of the damage he can do at ND. All-in-all, Notre Dame will be getting a hell of a coach if he comes over there: certainly someone who a) wants to coach in college and b) wants to coach there - after all you don't put a no buyout clause in your contract for ND unless you have some aspirations to coach there. I guess I give him some respect for that. I say bring it on!

But I personally would prefer it if Notre Dame would just not be that good and lose to us every year. In all seriousness, I'll be glad if Notre Dame can rise up and make the series between the two most accomplished collegiate football programs be one of the premier national rivalries again.

but I find it hard to fathom that this announcement would be made 2 days before his team plays for a conference championship, a BCS birth and a possible shot at a national title. Just sayin.

So if this is true and they announce it tomorrow, I am assuming Kelly will leave Cincy coachless for their pseudo-championship game and a possible national championship berth? Lets not forget here that if Texas loses to Nebraska, the bearcats will have a legitimate shot of playing for it all. This seems unlikely to me UNLESS they told Kelly that it was now or never. And I'm not sure he wouldn't have told them to piss off if that was the way they went about it. Either way I am not scared of Kelly going to ND. The Clausen/Tate topic is an interesting one here if this turns out to be true. It does seem possible that ND decided to make the hire ASAP in hopes that it would convince those two to stay. Still seems unlikely that they would stay anyway, but if they were going to change their minds for any new coach it would be Kelly.

Kelly has done a great job at other schools, but I'm still not convinced that he is the answer in South Bend. He will definitely bring a lot of hype with him, though, and any victories over ND will be even more satisfying than they have been for awhile.

I doubt BK announces this tomorow. the timing is just terrible. But if this is true, would you really want a guy who would do this to a program as your head coach? At least finish the reg season before you move on.

Yes but to do it 2 days before your season finally with a possible chance to go to a mNC game would hurt ND. Imagine all the negative PR that that would cause

I live in South Bend (well, Niles, Mich., a bedroom community of SB) and I have to hear the ND love-fest 24/7. For those of you that don't know, Niles, although technically in Michigan, is immediately north of South Bend and less than 3 miles from ND Stadium. Needless to say Wolverine fans are a minority. Although I think it's ridiculous for someone from Michigan to like ND, most of this town doesn't share that opinion. Anyway, a few things I hate about ND: I hate how ND kills up-and-coming programs like Cincy and Stanford by offering their coaches lots of money to convince them to leave. I hate their blank helmets. I hate how their fans are pompous, arrogant, and so delusional that they are somehow convinced that ND is still a championship-caliber program. I hate that they refuse to join a conference. I hate their academic excuse for why they haven't succeeded in the past 21 years. I hate their "Fighting Irish" nickname, where if it was any other ethnicity, the NCAA would have told them to change it. I hate how ND thinks it's the only program that has "tradition." I hate their bogus National Championship claims. Hopefully these rumors are false, but it wouldn't surprise me if they are true. Money talks, and ND has millions to burn.

Sorry dude, but I just don't get it. Why do you think people should cheer for a school that's ~4 hours drive from their homes instead of the one that's three miles away? Do we turn away Toledo based Michigan fans? And, as much as I'll be negbanged to death for it, at least 5 of the things you hate about Notre Dame are easily applied to large amount of the Michigan fanbase.
