Future WrestleMania at Michigan Stadium? Mentioned by WWE

I'm sure all of you on here are familiar with WrestleMania and how it is the Super Bowl of the WWE. The Pontiac Silverdome hosted it in '87 and set the national indoor attendance record at 93,173.

It returned to the state 20 years later at Ford Field and holds the Ford Field attendance record at 80,103. The event is a global attraction and brings in people from all over the world.

Anyways, on the WWE's official site, they put up and article about 10 venues that should host WrestleMania. And #5 on the list is none other than Michigan Stadium. Here is what is says-

One of the most revered stadiums in all of college football, the home of the University of Michigan Wolverines certainly lives up to its moniker, “The Big House.” With an official capacity of 109,901, Michigan Stadium is the largest outdoor stadium in the United States and third-largest in the world, making it an ideal host for WrestleMania and the WWE Universe.

In addition to being the home to the university’s storied football program, the massive complex hosts the institute’s commencement ceremonies, and has housed outdoor hockey games. “The Big House” also holds an NCAA attendance record of 114,804 during the September 2011 battle between Michigan and Notre Dame. Expanding the capacity onto the field area to surround the ring on The Grandest Stage of Them All would undoubtedly shatter that record, and create an unrivaled atmosphere of electricity. Not to mention, “WrestleMania in The Big House” is a great slogan.

The thing that makes me want to mention this is that WWE doesn't exactly throw names around for no reason. They only have their events at large stadiums and have just announced WrestleMania next year to be at the Superdome.

I think this is a serious concern and it has a better chance of happening than most people think. Michigan's athletic department would make a fortune on this if they were to loan WWE The Big House for one night.

The Winter Classic and the Polar Plunge benefiting the Special Olympics are two events that point to future events being held at the stadium. The current WrestleMania attendance record was set at the Silverdome. No doubt, Michigan would SHATTER that record. Not only would the athletic department benefit largely from hosting it but the Ann Arbor community as well.

I don't think sightlines are a concern because there have been many stadium WrestleManias. Silverdome in (1987), Reliant Stadium (2001, 2009), SkyDome (2002), Safeco Field (2003), Ford Field (2007), Citrus Bowl (2008), University of Phoenix Stadium (2010), Georgia Dome (2011), Sun Life Stadium (2012) and Met Life Stadium this year in April.

I really have no opinion on this. I'm more in shock than anything. Just wanted to leave this here and get some thoughts on it.

My 1st though is that it fits

My 1st though is that it fits sparty or ohio a bit more than UM, b/c I grew out of WWF when I was 12.

But then, they could get 125,000 in there and it would be a pretty cool event. weather would be an issue tho.

They're generally held in March/April. This years is going to be outdoors at Met Life Stadium in April. I'm really interested to see how that works out.

That's also where Super Bowl XLVIII is going to be.

Eh, yeah, but I don't know.

I wouldn't call the "Ohio" thing immature at all. At the same time, I personally am tired of it. I think it used to be funny at times, but at the same time there is an Ohio that is not Ohio State.

More importantly, OSU fans mock us calling them Ohio. There is a certain MSU inferiority complex there I think.  That's just my view - I know it's not a popular one here, but hopefully I've articulated why I don't like it.

@TomfromAA

I'm too lazy to say State now for Ohio...and too lazy to type it also.

Their fans can suck it, also, since all I hear from them is scUM and Walverine.

This latter comment offends me since, of late, I've been getting my Michigan gear at Meijer.

How about OSU?

Even shorter than "Ohio."  Problem solved........

And I don't see too many OSU fans saying "scUM" or "Walverine."  Just "TSUN" which is not really all that offensive, IMO.

So what?

Ohio fans mock us for everything we do, regardless of good taste, bad taste, or in between.  If it's good enough for Brady Hoke, and it's good enough for the team, I feel it would be rather presumptuous of me to say that I should be "above" it.

No, just no.

We shouldn't burn the place down though...

I have doubts they would be able to fill it with expanded seating on the field. The last thing they want is something short of a sell out. I don't particularyly see this happening. Bonus rumor dousing: Wrestlemania is held in March if memory serves. You want to roll the dice on an outdoor event in Michigan in March? I would not recommend it.

You're crazy if you don't

You're crazy if you don't think they could fill the big house for Wrestlemania. I stopped watching years ago, but people come from all over the world for that event. They would sell out without a problem.

They have no problem selling

They have no problem selling out NFL venues and creating a resale market with tickets scalped for $100+.  The event is huge and they would have no problem filling in the field with people.

Wrestlemania is a days, possibly week long event now too leading up to the event.  They have fan events for days beforehand.  Just like the Superbowl.  People travel from all over the world for it.  I'm sure selling it out would not be a problem.

As someone who lives close to

As someone who lives close to the stadium this is terrifying. While it would bring in a ton of money for the school and town, I frankly don't want 100,000+ drunk WWE fans roaming around where I live.

As a counterpoint, there are usually 100,000 drunk fans on Saturday mornings in the fall... Granted, there is a difference between the average Michigan football fan and the average WWE fan, but I don't think that they would be any worse than Sparty or Ohio fans coming to town. I've been to a WWE event before, and it wasn't anything like you'd expect. It was more little kids than anything else (Side note: I took my 10 year old cousin to a couple of events last year).

Yeah

A huge number of WWE fans these days are kids. Although there would be plenty of rednecks to worry about, a very large portion would be dads and their 5-12 year olds.

What he said. It's not like it used to be in the late 90s where you had people being crucified (literally, that happened), set on fire, have crap dumped on them, people bleeding all over the place and nudity.

It's a PG product now and is geared towards kids like it was in the 80s and early 90s.

Plus they're big partners with the Make a Wish foundation and do the anti bullying campaign (which is ironic being it's WRESTLING).

I Like WWE Sports "Entertainment."

I still think it sad that one of their events at Ford Field holds an attendance record over the Lions. I doubt they could top the 114K+ from the UTL though.

EDIT: Awright! Whoeva flamebaited this; I challenge you to a cage match while wearing throwback singlets. Unless it's Herm, because his would be authentic and he would likely eat the turnbuckle stuffing in classic George "The Animal" Steele fashion.

The reason they  break the attendance records is because they have seating on the field.  If it does come to Ann Arbor, they would probably break the UTL attendance.

What would it break? WWE is entertainment. UTL holds the world record for attendance at an American football game. If anything, The Big House would hold 3 world records.

Football, Hockey and Entertainment.

"Entertainment World Record"?

I can assure you that the world record for attendance at an "entertainment" event is much higher than 100,000.  It is probably higher than 500,000.  Michigan Stadium will not hold the world record for attendance at an "entertainment" event.

"Entertainment Event in a Confined Facility"?

Is there such a record?  I know that Guinness lists the largest crowd for a wrestling "entertainment event" as 190,000 in Pyongyang, North Korea, in a "Confined Facility" (the stadium, not the country).

Michigan Stadium will not break the Guinness record for attendance at a wrestling event.

Catering to the lowest common

Catering to the lowest common demoninator is mutually exclusive to "The Leaders and Best".

Yes, it sounds like I'm in the "sit down, your blocking my view while I doff my ascott whilst tippling on my sherry" demographic, but holy jeebus, if Dave Brandon can't understand the difference between the Wings v. the Leafs, versus a steroid-filled soap opera for the 16-25 year-old demographic befouling one of the Holy Grails of college football...

Seriously, your arrogance is astounding. Just because you do not care for something doesn't mean you should act as if anyone who approves of it is a lower form of life.

I think this is a wonderful idea. Just think of the amount of money that would be brought in to Ann Arbor from all over the world. Think what you will of the WWE, but having Wrestlemania in a city brings in to an area. In many ways the event has an effect similar to the Super Bowl. This year's event is expected to bring in over $100 million to the New York area. You can't laugh off that kind of money.

True, but at least hockey is an actual athletic competition.  Wrestling is just a soap opera on steroids.  If we're going to put the stadium out for hire, let's at least draw the line at actual athletic competitions.

I don't think it could be possible to host that type of event that early in the year, and I doubt it would sell out with alot of the big names that are dropping off the WWE roster due to retirement recently.

Iran is mentioned as well

Iran is mentioned as a possible location on the very next slide, making me doubt the sincerity of the whole slideshow.

Also, they mention Notre Dame Stadium as a possible host. I actually like that idea. Where better to host a fake event than at a stadium that is built on myths?

Actually there was already a professional wrestling event held there. It was in 1995 and was run by WCW and New Japan Pro Wrestling. The event supposedly drew over 340,000 people over two days. How much of that number is true and how much is North Korean propaganda is difficult to tell though.

Finally...

...a mention of the Steiners.

Frankly, I'm appalled at all the snobbishness here at Mgoblog given that two of our fellow alumni (the Steiner brothers) were amongst the best wrestlers.

I may be an ascot wearing, boat sailing snob myself but I would think that any self-respecting Michigan fan would have great respect for the Steiners, their sport, and especially the manner in which they would work a Columbus crowd into a frenzy.

I think it was from a Monday Night Raw event in Columbus where they enter the arena, grabbed the mic and then taunted, "When we were in school up at Michigan, we loved coming down to Columbus because beating the Buckeyes in football was just like their women...EASY!"

The Big House is

a massive stadium and has been enjoyed by many, but I don't believe that means it is for anytlhing and everyone.  Nothing against the WWE, but Yost, Bo and even marketing master  Don Canham would frown on this.  Just my opinion.

I'm sure hosting it would

I'm sure hosting it would pour a shit ton of much welcomed money into the city as well as a hefty cut to the university, both of which are never a bad thing.

That being said, in my middle school years, I watched wrestling religiously, until I was old enough to comprehend it's inaneness.  Thus, I'm quite aware of the type of "clientele" the WWE attracts. So, selfishly, as someone who considers the Big House hallowed ground and loves the "non WWE-ness" of the city of Ann Arbor...

Did you object to the "Rumble at the Big House" game between Michigan Tech and GVSU a few years ago?  Do you object to us hosting Slippery Rock for a football game?

I agree that Michigan Stadium should be above some spectacles like the WWE, but it's not like we haven't hosted non-Michigan sporting events there in the past that were fun and in the spirit of the place.

Taking this as a serious recommendation, which is a stretch

The Big House and The City of Ann Arbor do not have the infrastructure to pull an event like this off.  Sure, we fit 111,000 people in the big house every Saturday in the Fall, but a very large portion of these are students and locals who walk to games.  I would expect a miniscule porportion of Ann Arbor to attend.  As far as I know, there simply isn't enough hotel space + parking to have an event this big (assuming it would be ~125000).

Also, cliche aside, The University of Michigan and WWE mix together as well as water and oil.

Lots of hate in this thread.

Lots of hate in this thread.  The prevailing theme seems to be that it's beneath us to allow these dirty immature WWE fans into our totally pure and clean Ann Arbor and loan to them our crown jewel, the Big House, which has NEVER seen a rowdy crowd or a drunk person.  Ever.

I get where it's coming from, kinda, but really, we have a kickass stadium - the biggest in the US - and it only gets used a single-digit number of times per year, and not at all for the majority of the year.  I really don't see it being as big a problem as others seem to.

What's wrong with scripted entertainment?

In general, what's wrong with that? Just because the outcome is known to those involved before the event, it's still a surprise to the audience to actually view the event live or on television. I'd argue that 99 times out of 100 (the Horror being the exception) that when Michigan plays a cupcake football game the outcome is just as scripted and predetermined as the results in the WWE.

Bo, Crisler, & Yost are probably rolling in their graves over this idea, but it just doesn't bother me that much I guess.

Word.

College football is becoming nearly as scripted and as absurd as wrestling.  The Manty Teo incident being only the most obvious reference.  The dominance of the "cheatin" SEC, the evil BCS, the rush to embrace the latest/shiniest new uniforms, politicians grandstanding in state parliaments and so on...

If anything, at least WWE is an honest fake.  In most other sports, fans are still clinging to a somewhat naive illusion with a near religious fervor.

Let's look at both sides

On the one hand there's the downsides: the crowd could potentially be drunken rowdy rednecks/spartans/buckeyes/juggalos/morons. Michigan stadium is hallowed ground and this would disgrace the stadium. Wrestling is "beneath" Michigan.  Based on the number of downvotes in this topic, obviously there is a lot of negativity to this idea.

On the other hand, when I was a student (00-03), I knew plenty of people that were students of UM that watched the WWE and ordered pay per views every time there was one, and threw parties for said PPV events. So there are wrestling fans on campus (or at least there were a decade ago) so it's not as beneath UM as some people may think.  It will sell out for sure, which will bring in a ton of revenue for UM, as well as for the surrounding businesses with an influx of money and tourists in April, not exactly a boom time for many of our local businesses as they are about to face the slow summer season before Football rolls around.  Also, as mentioned, it would be pretty nifty for Michigan to hold the attendence records for an entertainment event, a football game, and a hockey game, all at the same venue.

I know there are many that would oppose this though so I don't know if it would happen, but if it does happen lets hope it is for Wrestlemania XL, because why not have the event XL at the largest stadium in the US?

For the record I no longer follow the WWE, but I used to watch it as a kid and teen. If they do stage the event and my son is old enough and watches wrestling by then, I would try to get tickets for his sake.

Yeah it would be "nifty" for Michigan to hold the wrestling attendance record, but would you really want wrestling to hold the Big House attendance record? Personally, I wouldn't.

really bother me all that much I guess. I know that's sacreligious to many but I wouldn't lose any sleep over this happening.  I'd be far more opposed to more advertising within the stadium for football games than this happening there.  Plus, here's another bonus: if this does go through, it gives everyone an additional excuse to hate Dave Brandon that much more.

Pretentious much?

Jesus the level of hypocrisy on this board is astounding. It's okay to cheer like a madman as 18-22 year olds slam into each other at top speed all for the sake of entertainment but God forbid the Big House hosts an event where paid adults do the same in the name of spectacle.

I don't watch wrestling anymore, but considering Madison Square Garden is the de facto home base for the WWF, maybe we should dial down the "too good for wrestling" comments.

and scripted entertainment? That's the crucial difference. I don't give a damn about the nature of the crowd, I care about the nature of what's going on down on the field.

Bravo, sir...

Fair enough. Although, replying to a post about this board being pretentious by asking a rhetorical question about my intelligence is hilarious. Was my remark rife with spelling or grammatical errors? Did I say "pro wrestling is real, dang it"?

The comments to which I'm taking offense are those questioning the nature of the crowd, as you so aptly put it. Comments which portray pro wrestling as being "beneath" the Big House. I cited Madison Square Garden as an example, which to my knowledge, isn't located at the site of the Tennessee State Fair and hosts a number of legitimate athletic competitions as well. Or the United Center. Or Staples Center. We all know Los Angeles is a rabid cesspool of white trash hillbillies.

I'm not in favor of hosting Wrestlemania at the Big House. I'm in favor of this thread not making this fan base look like a bunch of hipsters who look down at the common man's interests as too base or idiotic.

FULL DISCLOUSRE: I did not attend the University of Michigan or live in Ann Arbor, and so those with a more "pure" vision of the school and city may have a different opinion about sacrilege as it relates to the school / stadium / town.

Don't forget that...

...Ann Arbor has been host such high-brow events a Hash Bash and the Naked Mile.  Events noted for bringing masses of drugged out, counter culture hippies and creepy pedophiles to town respectively.  I doubt the WWE fanbase could match that.

the outcome of a WWE match is just as unknown as the outcome of a football contest. The only people that know the script are those in the ring. It's still an activity that requires a hell of a lot of athleticism, which is why so many former college football players and wrestlers go into that career.

So is ballet, but I don't think anybody would be advocating hosting the Bolshoi for a command performance either.

I'd go to this

if the cost wasn't too high. WWE, like it or not, is probanly a big deal to some. Personally, I think it would be pretty cool to at least experience it in person just once, to see what it's about. At the Big House would be neat too. It would never make me a WWE fan, but still. Maybe it builds character or something.

I don't see this "tarnishing" the Big House. I mean, who remembered Ford Field as having an attendance record for WWE before this thread? Few, everyone just knows it as the Lions stadium. It's just one of those events that needs a stadium, and in this case it happens to be ours.

I don't want the Stadium used for anything but Michigan football

and graduation.  No hockey, weddings, and hence no WrestleMania.  That said, I was at 'Mania in Detroit and it kicked ass.  Everyone complaining about the "type" of wrestling fan is an idiot.  There are idiot fans of everything, including Michigan football.  I know we wish every Michigan fan was a Michigan man and blah blah . . .  but that's simply not the case.  No different for pro-wrestling.  Or maybe I'm just biased because I'm one of those redneck, hillbilly wrestling fans.  Even three Michigan diplomas can't wash the white trash outta me.  Oh well.  I'll take the crowd at Wrestlemania over the crowd at the Blind Pig any day of the week.

Liking wrestling doesn't make

Liking wrestling doesn't make you white trash, there is just a lot of white trash that likes wrestling.

Plus redneck, hillbilly, and white trash all all different things.

I never claimed that all three were synonyms

So long as three aren't mutually exclusive nothing I said is in error.     White trash is clearly compatible with both, quoth the Wiki,

"In common usage "white trash" overlaps in meaning with cracker (regarding Georgia and Florida), hillbilly (regarding Appalachia), Okie (regarding Oklahoma origins), and redneck.[6] The main difference is that "redneck," "cracker", "Okie", and "hillbilly" emphasize that a person is poor and uneducated and comes from the backwoods with little awareness of the modern world, while "white trash" emphasizes the person's moral failings."

Maybe you can finesse out an incapability between "redneck" and "hillbilly" based on the etymology-- the redneck can only be a Southern flat-land farmer while the hillbilly must be an Applachian hill dweller.   But that' s just being nit-picky and pretendious, which is exactly what your post is.

Well if you can only apply redneck and hillbilly to people from appalachia and the south, then what do you call people from michigan/ohio/indiana that are like that?

Hockey is going to keep

Hockey is going to keep happening. That was such a success it'd be foolish not to do it again. Once every 4-5 years is fine with me.

I'm surprised you didn't mention lacrosse. SO many people were bitching when it was known lacrosse would be using The Big House until they get a stadium which isn't happening until 2014-15. And even then, they're going to keep playing Battle at The Big House after the spring football games.

I should add that

I should add that at UTL, the Michigan fan two rows (thank God) behind me in the stands at the Big House pissed in the bleachers (and on himself, of course). Literally tried to covertly pee straight down.   I have never witnessed that any other event, including wrestling shows, monster truck rallies, heavy metal concerts.  I'm not sure about the height of the enlightened ground on which the Michigan gameday crowd stands.

Yeah, and that reminds me...

...of a drunk guy walking near the State Street & Hoover intersection walking down the sidewalk waving his penis around and literally pissing all over the place.  Remarkably there wasn't a cop within sight despite hundreds of fans milling about during the typical pregame ritual.

When it comes to crowd behavior, Ann Arbor is hardly beyond reproach.

I know a guy who did tried to covertly pee during an OSU game a few years back but failed because he peed on the guy in front of him who turned around and was about ready to kill him.

The guy was one of those MSU-4-lyfe Michigan students though, so maybe that's only relevant for reenforcing stereotypes

Don't know if I agree with it

But this is a position I can respect. You can even throw the Big Chill in there because it's a Michigan team.  But the whole "the NHL is ok to have the Stadium record, but not wrestling" because it's a real athletic event....I mean, I bet there's a whole lot of overlap in the hockey/wrestling crowds.

First, thanks for posting

First, thanks for posting this.  Don't know why you're getting downvoted.  It's not April 1 so I have to assume this has at least a grain of validity. (clicks on link ) My God.  The WWE has a pic of Michigan Stadium front and center.

I will start by saying I was at the Pontiac Silverdome Wrestlemania.  I was  a youngster.  Wrestling was in its heyday, and kids thought it was real.   Hulk Hogan bodyslammed and pinned Andre The Giant and it was great.

Having said that...  if Brandon allows this to happen...  guh,  I have no words.  NO.  Just NO.

Revenue...

What about the mountain of cash it would bring the athletic department? Maybe it helps fund a few line items, so they can avoid raising ticket prices for a season. Just spitballing here but either way, more revenue is typically not a bad thing.

Good point if we could

Good point if we could actually trust Brandon to earmark this potential windfall for holding firm on ticket prices.  As it's been pointed out here on numerous occasions, the Athletic Department has been running huge surpluses for the past few years and that hasn't stopped the creep upward in ticket prices.  That's just inspired the administration to build and renovate more.

I am not a wrestling fan, but

I am not a wrestling fan, but goddamn I would go to this.

And seriously, what makes those of you who claim that it would be all MSU/OSU/etc. fans truly believe that a more significant percentage of those fanbases are WWE fans than Michigan? I have a feeling that if this were to happen, there will be just as many, if not more, UM fans in attendance than those of MSU or OSU. Plus, if tickets aren't too terribly priced, I think a fair number of current students would go just for the novelty of it all.

Awesome

This would be great. Weather is a concern; I think we'll see how far this idea moves forward after this here's event in NJ.

And for those knocking this idea as not being good enough for UM, there are numerous people on this very site who freak out when teenagers lose a football game. Let's pump the brakes a bit on the high and mighty tone.

Logistics

I think there are a few logistical concerns, the one about hotel spaces has already been mentioned. The other one I see is how would WWE get their massive stage into to the stadium? I've heard large concerts cannot go to the Big House because of how smaller the 1 tunnel is.

If they could figure it out, I think it'd be fun. I was at Wretlemania the last time it was in Detroit and it was one hell of a time.

Obviously there are divergent

Obviously there are divergent opinions on the idea of the WWE at the Big House but , in general, I like the idea of events at the Big House (and I do live in the immediate vicinity). I guess the big question is whether on not there's any word from the AD about such an idea.

Don't think we'll ever have to worry about this...

The same issues that prevent the Big House from playing host to large scale rock concerts and other similar events would prevent the WWE from bringing Wrestlemania here too...
Mainly - it's a physical issue.  The tunnel isn't big enough for trucks to bring equipment in, so any stage set up, sound system, and lighting rigs, would have to be dropped in via crane, or broken down to smallest parts and carried in for re-assembly, making any such production cost-prohibitive.

and that's fine by me.

I wondered that too...

and really there are only 3 possibilities - it was built completely inside the stadium, it was carted in in slabs, or it was dropped in via crane in bigger pieces.  i bet someone at the athletic department could answer that question.

I vote yes

I haven't had time to reply to this thread but this is something I think would be pretty cool.  A couple things right off the bat:  I am a U of M Alum and a WWE fan, so yes, people who graduated from Michigan can like the WWE.

I've followed wrestling almost my whole life.  My dad was a fan when he first immigrated to the US and would go once a month to Madison Square Garden to watch the events.  When he moved to Michigan, he would be the ring doctor at local events (he met the Junk Yard Dog for old school wrestling fans).

People will say all of this is fake.  I wouldn't go with fake but rather staged.  Professional Wrestlers for the most part are incredible athletes who put their bodies on the line everyday.  Yes, the outcome is predetermined but that does not mean they don't risk injury every match.

I think this would be great for Ann Arbor.  The event would be the first weekend of April which isn't a busy time for the city.  WrestleMania would probably sell 125,000-140,000 tickets to the event, shattering any American record for largest crowd.  The amount of money that both the University of Michigan and the city of Ann Arbor would make cannot be ignored.

I understand many people are worried about drunk rednecks who would come to the Big House.  Yes, those type of fans exist but they aren't the only ones.  I've been to a few WWE events including two PPVs and the crowd is mostly kids and their families.  WWE is huge with children and having young kids come to the Big House to watch WrestleMania would only help Michigan's brand with the young.

Do I think this will happen, No.  Ann Arbor simply cannot handle that many people for a whole week (for WrestleMania, there is a full week of events throughout the hosting city).  To have it in Ann Arbor, you would have to lean on Detroit as well.  I would expect most of the fan events that happen the week of WrestleMania to take place in Detroit.  WrestleMania at the Big House and Monday Night Raw the following night in Detroit as well.

Before they even think about doing a WrestleMania in the Big House, I think they should first try doing a house show or a weekly televised show in Crysler.
