Funk v Frey
I guess I was a bit surprised that Frey was replaced by Funk on the staff. I always thought Frey was a pretty good position coach and clearly has been in contact with our current recruits (which right now seems pretty critical). I don't know much re: Funk as a position coach, maybe he is an upgrade. Alternatively, it is possible Frey was looking for a change and did not consider staying with the new staff. Does anyone have any insight on this move? Maybe someone on the board tracked him at Ball State. Thanks.

Frey's expertise is zone blocking. New offense will be pro-style based with tons of Iso blocks and pulling guards, etc. Different techniques.

To be honest, I have a hard time not being impressed with all of the offensive coaches at SDSU - they took meh talent and created one of the country's top offenses in their second year. I don't know how much of that credit goes to each position coach, but on the whole, SDSU's offensive coaching staff was doing something right.

Some of the worst defensives in the country are in the MWC. Six of the D's they went up against were in the bottom 20 of the country plus an FCS school and you have over half their schedule. In contrast we played 6 of the top 30 D's, 7 if you count the bowl game. To put it into perspective, Bowling Green's D was better then 6 of the Ds (excluding FCS) that SDSU played.

That's more perspective than I can handle on a Monday.

But Frey was part of the former coaching staff and Hoke wants his own guys. Good luck to Frey at IU.
Now brink on da Funk.
Go Blue!

And Rod Smith is the co-OC at IU now as well.

And they brought in Kevin Wilson, who studied under Randy Walker, and was a top OC under Stoops. Wilson also went after a Boise State guy, who accepted, and then went back to Boise. Frankly, I think Indiana is being very smart about its staff.

Funk has been with him since Ball St. Coaches tend to hire people they have worked with and trust to do a good job for them.

I like the thought of Hoke bringing most of his offensive assistants with him. It is going to be a new transition for the players, and the cohesiveness of the staff wll make the transition much smoother for Denard and company. Hopefully we can create some cohesiveness on the defensive side. There hasnt been much of that over the last few years.

I know Jackson's coming back to coach the RB's and Borges is the OC, but are any of the other position coaches on board yet?
January 17th, 2011 at 1:47 PM ^
...as mentioned Funk will be coaching the OL, Jeff Hecklinski will be a position coach on the offense/recruiting coordinator (I'm not sure as to where but he's generally been either RB or WR coach and since we have Fred Jackson...), and Mark Smith will be the LB coach. Hecklinski and Smith have been with Hoke since Ball State while Funk seems to have joined Hoke as SDSU. Brian had a fairly critical post about these hires at http://mgoblog.com/content/hokebits-assemble but they seem like experienced hires.
