Funchess tabbed as "possible" NFL bust

Submitted by StephenRKass on

NFL cheat sheet tabs Funchess as their LINK: number 1 potential NFL draft bust in 2015.

They cite his lack of dominance at either the WR or TE position. While his size and athleticism make him look like a TE, he is panned for his "lack of blocking and physicality." Cheat Sheet also criticizes him for "average hands" and being "an average route runner."

My personal hope is that his injuries in the ND game in 2015, along with the lack of a great QB, and the lack of another great receiver or two (a la Gallon) contributed greatly to his relative lack of production. I'd love to see Funchess shine in the show, and really come into his own.

I agree with the OP in hoping those injuries limited him during the season. I would like to see him succeed in the league. At the same time, the article ain't lying. He does appear to have bust potential, but I could see him having significant success as well.

He shouldn't be number one on the list. A second round pick is a pretty big risk and some first rounder should be higher on the list.

Agree, I'm not sure I would really consider anyone outside of a first round pick (maybe just the top 20 picks) that didn't wind up being a successful player a bust.   This list is a joke.  Funchess was the first player on this list selected and some of the others were 3rd and 5th rounders.

A bust is a first rounder coming in with sky high expectations that fails to live up to them.  How many 2nd rounders, let alone 3rd or 5th rounders, wind up being difference makers?  There is a lot less invested in them and less hell to pay if they don't wind up successful.

I always thought his shoulder pads looked ridiculously oversized when he was an underclassman.

Almost as if Hoke wanted him to have more size for blocking, so they gave him the biggest shoulder pads they could find.

I think he could bust if his team tries to use him exclusively as a WR or traditional TE. I believe he has value if used as a TE/WR hybrid.

Like most everyone else, I hope that he succeeds in the NFL, and hope he realizes that as tough as playing in college was, the NFL is truly a mans' league and needs to give even MORE effort and can't be cited for lack of blocking, etc.  Ask Johnny Football how well he "wrecked the NFL" last year; we all know what got wrecked in Cleveland last year.

What has Funchess ever done well other than look really athletic? He's never had elite hands, never blocked well, never seemed to run routes particularly well. I don't know why we would expect this to magically get better in the NFL

Good lawd, virtually every NFL player has bust potential.  Nothing in this "breakdown" sounds different than what you'd say about a half-dozen 2nd/3rd round WRs each year.  If Funchess was faster, had better hands, was a better blocker, etc., he'd have been a top-15 draft pick.  But he also has the potential to be a dominating player if he stays healthy and makes the necessary improvements.  The fact this clickbait article is being taken as anything more than some blogger needing to hit his 100 words this hour exposes the lingering distaste people around here have for a former player whose worst crime is, apparently, not living up to our expectations.
