FSU, ACC pushing for 8 team playoff
Keep going.

"I think the perceived bias of the ACC in general, [with] Florida State falling to No. 4 in the rankings and still being undefeated and being [No.] 3 at the end of the season … a one-loss ACC team or two-loss ACC team is going to have a hard time breaking that top four," Gruters said. "I think the top ACC team over the next four or five years, we're going to be in that [No.] 5 to 8 category. And we're going to be on the outside looking in."
Gruters then urged Wilcox to encourage the ACC to push for an expansion of the new playoff system - from four to eight teams. He said that was the only way, "to guarantee an ACC team will have a shot at winning the national championship each year."
I prefer a 6 team playoff as well.
-A 6 team playoff would reward the #1 and #2 seeds with a bye and offer a new dynamic.
-A 6 team playoff would ensure that at least every major conference champion has a chance to get in.
-A 6 team playoff would not spoil the regular season.
-If you finish outside of the top 6 you don't really have a legitimate complaint of being snubbed. TCU this past year has a legitmate complaint of being snubbed.

Your argument is like saying marijuana is terrible because heroin is terrible. There is no evidence at all to suggest going to 8 games will lead to going to 16 games. You are just inferring one leads to the other. Going to 8 is not the gateway drug for going to 16.
What's even the point of playing the conference championship games, if half of the losers are still gonna get a shot at the national championship?

that's why
Even if there aren't that many quality teams the pretenders will be eliminated. It ensures the P 5 all get their champion in the playoff. With SEC promoters trying to get 2 SEC teams in the 4 team playoff you have a situation where some good teams won't get in because of politics. Remember earlier in the season when 4 of the top 5 ranked teams were SEC teams and the SEC lobby was joking about an all SEC playoff? What a joke that would have been. Also I like the fact that with 8 teams a cinderella team or two might have a shot at the NC.
8 sounds good and let's put the first round games on campuses. Give the better ranked teams a reward and inject some flavor and atmosphere into these games.
Maybe this will send a Southern team to a northern campus in December. Something that people have been wanting to see for years.
I'd think the Big 12 would be pushing for this, since their lack of a conference championship game will hurt their chances of having teams qualify.
That is all
I am always up for MOAR football, but I'm afraid that raising the number to anything more than 8 would take away from the urgency of the regular season.
I wouldn't mind 6-8 team playoff, but at the same time the current format does a nice job. However, I will never say no to more football.
So FSU wants to play even more teams that would house them?

I support an eight team playoff. There are ALWAYS going to be arguments around why the 5,6,7 teams are more deserving.
Just do it. Make two more bowls super meaningful, creates more money to share,
let's deserving teams compete and adds only one more week for student athletes.
The New Years "six" can easily become four.
Much more excitement, involvement and equity with eight. Like the on campus first round idea, not sure how feasible.
Yes, some teams fans might have to travel twice, but, if a team at that level is winning, fans will come. Also gives more non affiliated fans a reason to go to a bowl game since playoff games would mean something.
I say eight is great.
If you go to eight you'll have a bunch of conference championship game losers still in the mix. That shouldn't happen. I also agree that a bye is too big of a reward for the top 2 in a six team field.

That is not a good argument to not expand to 8. There are plenty of NFL teams that lose their last game and still make the playoffs and do just fine.
The NFL plays 16 games. How many times have we seen NFL teams rest regulars in meaningless late season games as they prepare for the playoffs. Exactly what you don't want in college football IMO.

So leave it at four, where every year you will exclude teams with a legitimate gripe - nice solution.
is in the eyes of the beholder. A 2 loss SEC team that just lost the SEC championship game probably makes an 8 team playoff. WTF was the purpose of the SEC championship in this scenario? Seeding?
Eight would be okay if they eliminate the conference championship games. But we know thats not going to happen.
What I'd really like to see though......don't play the championship game on a freaking Monday night! Basketball does it out of necessity becasue the semifinals on Saturday just makes too much sense. So football follows suit becausue...why? The NCAA needs to work out a deal with the NFL to get a time slot on a Saturday for the championship game. If not, maybe Friday night works too.

Do we reconsider the format of the playoffs?
In other words, would we make the Rose Bowl and whatever the Big 12/SEC bowl is become 2 of the 4 games in a hypothetical 8-team playoff? The other two games would then be a matchup of the ACC champ vs. the 2nd highest rated non-champ team, and maybe the last game would offer a spot to the top G5 team vs. the highest rated non-champ team.
Perhaps that is playing with the seeding a little too much, but I personally have nostalgia for the days of the Rose Bowl really mattering. In this format, it becomes a permanent B1G/P12 game with semifinal implications. The only major downside here is the B1G champ will forever be playing a virtual road game on the West Coast to try and advance, and some of the seeds wouldn't match up perfectly each year. Hypothetically, the #1 and #2 teams could be set for a quarterfinal matchup.
